Does anyone here encode their own videos?
I nead DivX encoder power but don't want to pay for it and I'm afraid of downloading the free(spy)ware ones that come up when you google "DivX Free".
If you've got something or have a link you'd recommend, be a sport and post it up :niceone:
Any encoding advice much appreciated~!

Get RAD video tools, which is free.
Get K-lite Codec pack, which I believe is free
Get SLD codec pack, which I believe is free.
Should do most of what you want I think.

Hold your horses.
For the simple most effective way to encode into Divx you should use AutoGK, It hides all the tricky configuration, runs the file through the best applications and the correct settings and spits out an excellent file, It includes teh required codecs, and lets you choose options such as specifying a size and resolution.
Its perfect for encoding files to be uploaded to youtube or for email, or even encoding an entire movie.
Oh yeah, its free, and it includes Virtual dub, the single best encoder ever given away (apart from Super Encoder)

Trust me, AutoGK is the tool your look for.
If you want to mess around with encoding into different formats then try super encoder.
http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html
This has all the required codecs built into it, will playback just about any file, and encode into just about any format, Want to encode a MOV file into the format that works on a PSp?, no problem. Hundreds of other presets, thousands of possibilities.
All free, Top quality, and free of malicious software.

<hints id="hah_hints"></hints>Go open source. Better quality, definitely no spyware.
I'm pretty sure you can get mplayer/mencoder (same package) on Windows. Command-line, but highly configurable, and excellent quality.
Just did some Googling and you can get a clicky pretty GUI thing for mencoder on Windows. Available here: http://www.videohelp.com/tools/MeGUI .
