Gad...

You know me - I'm frickin' useless with my PC at home but I want to convert ripped CD music files to MP3's

Which software can I buy or download that is reliable, won't fill my pc with shit i don't want and is actually useable by a man with an IQ of less than 10,000

I'm not wanting to start a fanboy war here Paul, but itunes will do all that you need and more.

Very, very easy to use. PM me if you need a hand.

I'm currently converting my entire CD collection to MP3s and I'm finding that itunes new Coverflow view system (which looks a bit like a really flash version of a Wurlitzer jukebox) is very cool.

I use dbPower amp.

There are a few things to keep in mind when encoding and decoding mp3s. Different software is different software.. the underlaying scripting is what's important.

It is generally agreed that anything powered by the LAME code for mp3s is the best. dbPower AMP is powered by the LAME scripting, and I like it because you can right click on any audio file and convert it then and there

But for doing direct rips from CDs to play on my mp4 player (mp3's are so last year :oP ) I use Musicmatch Jukebox as I like their ID3 tagging abilities.

MM Jukebox is free.

dbPower AMP is not free, or it has a free version with limited conversion abilities. I however have dbPowerAMP full version as part of a trade discount thing, so if you want that I can send it on disk.

Fark! - I give up. Don't stress - I threw Vickis (free) MP3 player in the bin as I think its the devils spawn. How the fuck can the sell these crap things when they are pretty well useless? (shudder)

Its easy to convert them matey. I think even the newest version of Windows Media player, if you been keeping everything up to date, should do it for you.

Then you plug the mp3 player into your computer and the computer reads it as a removable drive, and you copy/paste the mp3 files onto that drive

If you use musicmatch, it can create a music directory, divided into groups and subgroups by artists and albums right in your My Music folder.

This is all assuming you are using XP.

I have XP and I will try and update the windows thingy but I hate apple / MS and the way they want to know everything you do - I'd rather give my fingerprints to the cops.. Its seriously pissing me off tonight - I'm off to read a book - ON PAPER!

You'd be best to give up on mp3s... CDEX is about as simple as they come. iTunes is flakey crap which has inexplicably nailed a few PCs in its time... of course, Apple will tell you that it's because they're PCs... how convenient for them

I found the CDex site really confusing - I asked to download it and all it did was tell me about all it's features and showed me a bunch of files with no hint that i would need one of them or all of them or what - stupid! Looked like one of those geeky 'we will force you to ask a dumb question so we can make you look like an arse' type sites.. Bah! I actually wasted an hour there and believe it or not - I'm not a complete idiot but feck it annoyed me.

iTunes just annoys me on sooo many levels..... (its a moral issue)

I think I'll build a portable record player.... or learn to play the mouth organ instead...

Yeah yeah yeah - been there last night - 'Your download should begin shortly? OK - define shortly?? I waited a while - nothing happened... tried again etc.. Slightly distrustful of that kinda thing..
