i keep getting call after call like 5 in a row now withheld number, i don't like to answer them i dunno figure it might be cops or something, i figure if somebodys hiding thier number from me it aint a gud thing.

Yeah you silly cunt, if it IS the cops then that's the least of your worries.
Now if it is NOT the cops then you really are in the shit.

28th June 2007, 23:14
If the cops are ringing you, then it aint that bad, cos they wouldn't call to let yuo know they were after you for something serious, and they would leave a message. Five calls in a row would be damn near harassment, and they aint dumb enough to jeaperdise anything by being so silly.
Baycorp and IRD however, will just keep coming, not answering wont help, they've got unlimited resources to chase you with.
Just grow a pair and answer the thing.
Madness
28th June 2007, 23:17
If it is the plod there's no point in answering anyway. They would have already remotely activated the big brother feature installed on all modern cellphones. Your phone is probably now a microphone, linked directly to Police National Headquarters.
You're fucked Mark.

EDIT: Wrap the fucker in tinfoil, quick!

All sorts of places withhold their number, mainly the places that run on PABX's, hospitals, that sorta jazz.
Someone could be dead.

If someone is ringing then its just plain rude not to answer it. The only time I will not answer my phone is when I'm operating a motor vehicle.

it turned out just to be my mate on his bros phone, not wanting me to have his number lol....

My life is busy enough without having a "private" mobile. Then again, when my phone rings, the shit has usually hit the fan somewhere, but yeh, always answer the phone, it can be anything (plus boss would start to be just a little annoyed, if I decided not to answer my phone :chase:)
re PABX, it does sometimes depend system to system. One client, I can see which DDI is ringing me, another, I was puzzled for a few days as the person ringing from a number kept changing, but then I realised, its just a line, to be used, to go out.

You're being silly. Telecon are such a fuckup that a lot of the time the caller ID doesn't come through and it's nothing to do with the other party deliberately withholding their number.

My husbands number always comes up private number, don't know why as he didn't ask for it to be witheld, and Telstra don't know why it does that either.

Most of the organisations I work for have withheld numbers so if I didn't answer my cellphone I would get bugger-all work!
Even if it is the cops, they would already have your number so what's the big deal about answering it?

I disagree - it's my phone and my time. Just because I have a phone and someone has my number, doesn't mean I am duty bound to pick it up every time. I'll answer the phone if I'm in the mood to answer it. If I'm not, or I'm busy, I will leave it. It's what I have voicemail for.
At work it's a bit different of course - not my own time then, so got to answer the damned thing whether or not I feel like talking to the person on the other end!
I must admit, if someone's number doesn't show up on my cellphone, I am more likely to let it go to voicemail. Again, it's what voicemail is for. Don't have caller ID on my home phone so have no idea who withholds and who doesn't.

And I accept that your scenario is totally different to mine :)
Everyone is different. I guess that's why I disagreed with the 'it's rude if you don't answer it' comment, cos it's not necessarily rude. We all just have different ways of dealing with the outside world!
My hubby drives me nuts (I think it's in the job description!) cos he's totally the opposite to me. If the home phone rings, he stops whatever he's doing and runs to try and get there before it stops ringing. And even if I've said 'if it's for me, I don't want to talk to anyone', he dutifully passes the phone to me if I'm asked for. It pisses me off!
Love him dearly, but the number of rows we've had over the phone! LOL

Many people have confidential landlines and those numbers will not show up on any cell phone when they call it. They have them confidential for many reasons.
They could be teachers, police, people who have been abused and hiding from their ex's, hospitals and some businesses. Some people chose to have a confidential number - it doesnt cost a thing now to have one.
The fact that the person rung 5 times within a short period of time, means it could be urgent...... so answer the damn thing..... someone close to you maybe be dead or badly hurt.
But as it turned out it was just a friend.

I'm not in a store, I'm in the callcentre.
The way it's set up means that if we call out from there and have our number showing it'll be the number of the individual phone, not the 0800 number. The idea when we leave messages is to call back the 0800 number, not the individual operator. If the operator is on a break or in another call, then it messes up the work distribution and means only the people verifying will get calls. It'd mess up queues and management of calls etc.
Besides that, we get a ridiculous amount of prank calls due to having the second most recognised number in NZ (after 111). We don't want them to be able to get the same person every time.

Oh, I see. I'm sure a little nice talking to your telco would let you set the 0800 number for your caller id though. Mind if I ask how big the call centre is?

not just in this case but in general.
My landline numbers have always been 'private' and not in the whitepages etc and always appear 'withheld' when I call people from it.
However, I dont generally answer my cell phone if the number is withheld; I prefer to wait and listen to the answermachine message.
I also may not answer my cell phone if the number is not in my address book - ie I dont know them.
When I set up my landline recently I got Telecom to check the number to see how many times it has been dialled in the past year or so, to ensure it was not going to be ringing every five minutes with wrong numbers.
Everyone is diferent Mark, some people value their privacy more than others.....
I cant stand it when people turn up without being invited to my home, I find it very rude. If someone wishes to come over, they should call/text me first and wait for me to invite them. It is only polite in my view. But that is the English culture I was brought up on.
FYI Mark: 0197 before the number will withhold your number from showing to the person your calling, and if your line is private doing the same number will do the opposite.
Because of the frequency of Telemarketer calls we get, we told all our friends to make sure they didn't have with held numbers, or they would not have their calls answered.
