Hi all,

I'm sure you wise people can help me on this matter,
My 94 cbr250rr has a little problem she has started to inconsistantly idle normal idle seems to be 1.5k rpm then it sometimes lowers 1k rpm then back up again when i hold the revs in neutral at say 3-4k rpm then drop the throttle she stalls?

can someone please help me with this

cheers

Fuelling, carbs or (possibly) spark plugs.

Just sit back with a beer and watch TV when things need doing.

Oh, you wanted bike advice, not advice on how to be idle.

Never mind then.

Is it due for a service or does it ever see a bike shop???

Could be carbs, carb rubbers, valve clearances, plugs, air filters or a few things really but without knowing the bikes history it's a bit tricky... A 250cc / 4 sports bike is a finicky thing that needs regular maintaining I'm afraid..

thanks guys notice also it's got this little popping sound when held a 5k rpm in neutral which leads me to believe it could be a spark plug or lead so will book into the bike shop for a check up tomorrow

cheers

Every CBR250 I've come across idles inconsistently in a pattern.

As for the stalling thing, Fire your bike up with the choke and no throttle, let it sit for a minute before you turn off the choke and start riding. It should not stall if the engine has been running for a while, otherwise you have a problem and it really isn't just u. :)

On my bike if the temp is below say... C__|__________H it will stall.

thanks, but i also find that after riding for a while also when bike is heated right up and i might be slowing down for light or something pull the clutch and she stalls there too.

another issue i've noticed is it has a strong fuel smell very lean smelling perhaps this is part of the problem

well team,

Just got back from the boys at red baron found out a few interesting things might be useful for those that come across the same issue.

apparently city riding on a cibby is not enough to heat the motor right up therefore causing the carbs to load up causing a stall.

Riding a cibby on the motorway in 6th gear at 100km/h sits at 9k/rpm which also isn't enough to get the cibby rolling therefore loads ups the carbs and causes a stall.

Apparently they like to be thrased alot!!! being a high performance 250 they run very lean and air fuel mixture is optimum at ridiculously high revs.

So went out for a cane to muriwai beach whilst the weather held up and what do you know? she was happy!!!

the moral of the story is a babyblade is only happy when you are (14-18k/rpm :scooter:

thanks again for all your input team

My god you didn't just buy that from Red Baron on Gt North Rd did you? The red, black & graphite 250 fireblade with 30,000kms for 6.5k???

I was going to buy that bike, but I was told fuck that buy a 2007 ninja with 0kms and a warranty for 7k at Mt Eden..

But good on you, I would have loved that, Personally I think it's the coolest 250 around I wish they were still in production.

Regardless of the experience you've had, and the fact that it aligns with what they tolds you, I still have to call bullshit on what RB have told you. I've friends that have had these, and that's not the experience they've had. That's the sort of advice that would apply to a 2 stroke.

I know you will anyway, but make sure you keep an eye on it, they're typically sewing machine reliable, if you know what I mean?

If you havent ridin anything faster than a cbr250 then they feel like a pocket rocket if you have then they feel like an electric scooter still heaps of fun in the twisty bits though

Baby Blade--I'd suggest to ya that you diddn't quite hear it right.
The problemis a combination of long time sitting at idle and relatively short trips. You could just as easily (but a lot less fun) fix your problem by riding ya bike in the lower gears -high rpm down the motorway for 10 minutes or so.

Just out of curiousity what problems did they have with theirs??

Yeah i did but for alot cheaper that 6.5k it's probably the best conditioned i've seen from a dealer in aucks and after the test ride i had to have it so far so good anyhow

Yeah it looked mint in the photos, I rang them up the guy said he could do 6.1k for me, Shit i would have loved that bike so much, They sorta convinced me otherwise that I don't really want a 13 year old bike and be sitting on the side of the road looking like a gimp when it fucks out, Guess they didn't understand how mint this one was. We should go for a ride some time, I'd love to see it!

Sounds just like a 2-stroke in the way that unless you use powerband a lot, the plugs will foul up...

Just out of curiousity what problems did they have with theirs??Essentially, none. They're very reliable... and like any other IL4 Honda, they don't care a fig how they're ridden... fast or slow, they always behave the same. I feel even less comfortable for you now that I know that the people who gave you that advice are also the ones that sold it to you. Heard too many Red Baron horror stories from this site (although to be fair, none in the last 12 months) and other places I guess.

As an example... a Type R Integra (just as an example that you might be able to relate too)... it's a high revving natured engine right? Regardless of whether a boy racer canes the crap out of it, or a grandma owns it, and only does the shopping in it, they idle the same all day every day... it's what Honda do best.

Just make sure you're completely happy before the warranty period runs out is all I'm saying.

thanks for the advice,

They did tell me to run it for 500k's and if the problem persist to bring it back, they said the bikes there sit around for months and need a good run so ill run it for 500k's and see what happen hopefully will be ok

The major difference between a car and a bike in terms of the fueling is the size of the jets and orrafaces in the carbs. Its easy for a little bit of crud to lodge itself in a gallery on a 4 cylinder 250 where it takes a bigger amount to block a car one. Giving a Jap import a little time to settle into the new fuel (ours is different to theirs) and wash out all the old stuff is an honest request by RB.
But it sounds like it just needs a little tune, Let it run the 500km then if it is no better ask them to check valve clearances, carb ballance, idle mixture and air filter. Changing the plugs will help short term but they are a symptom not the cause.

Well that's sort of my point... it doesn't need to be trashed all the time to get keep it going right, it is more likely that something isn't quite right (as you say, probably needs a tune).

You strike me as a straight forward honest guy, my instincts tell me that you want to sell bikes that are in a good state of tune when they leave your shop. I do not get that feeling about RB, and I don't like seeing young guys on their 'first bikes' being fobbed off. Yes that's a view all based on hearsay, but I just feel uneasy when things like this come up.

You don't want to nanna a vehicle either. But especially a high revving sports bike. Get it warm, let it settle before you take off, use your powerband and take the long way home.
