Righto, I can easily organise another Motu-Waikaremoana ride.
I'm now based at Rotoiti, there's plenty of room for any strays that want to stay there Fri night.
Then on Saturday off via the highway & a few backroads to Opotiki & on up the Motu, beers @ the Matawai pub then into the hills to the salubrious shearers quarters of Journey's End Station.
On Sunday head for Wairoa via some backroads then on through the Waikaremoana road. If we make really good time we could then loop south via the Waipunga to the Napier-Taupo. Any of the crew that don't want to ride home Sunday night could stay in the 'hut' at Reporoa.
Now all we need is a date, 4/5 August perhaps?
Cheers

Can you do a dual sport tyres route - or do we need knobs on.

Sounds interesting, I am interested in what sort of accomodation is on offer.
Can you book in some sun for this ride!!

I think these rides need to stay in the "not too difficult" sector. This allows for two up riding, and those who are quite new to off road/gravel.
The last ride was an excellent example of team work and consideration.
These rides need to be about fun and adventure. (blood and guts, all out tracks would scare many off).
Big Beemers, Dual Sports etc are the target group.
Accommodation needs to be comfortable and reasonable.
With regards to a time, I think Sept- November, allowing events like the Cold Kiwi etc to pass, and hopefully the weather may settle(Tui moment).

Yep, absolutely, the Motu-Waikaremoana route I'm proposing is easily doable on any adv bike with any sort of dual purpose tyre. It's all gravel roads, the Motu is about as rugged as a 'road' gets before you call it a 4x4 track but it's been ridden on a Harley Road King & done by my sister on her 1st adv ride so it ain't too bad.
The accomodation at Journey's End is really good, you'll just need a sleeping bag & something for breakfast. Last time we rode through there my friends Ann & Rob the owners invited all 7 of us to dinner & we had a great feed, otherwise we can have a meal at the pub on the way in or a cook up at the shearers quarters.
I'm easy on other dates apart from 11/12 Aug.
Cheers

Motu, Waikaremoana sounds good to me, I just have to have sufficient brownie point earning time before being allowed out again (the flood in the basement this weekend while I was at Whangamomona didn't really help my cause).
I would probably make it a 3 day event to allow time to get back comfortably, possibly coming back to Jafa central via king country roads. Tri-boy, your only allowed to come if you stop picking fights with everyone. :innocent:

Fun and adventure, exploring new areas, meeting and making new friends is what we are after. We are happy to take some time off work to explore places further afield.

.
When I say the shearers quarters is 'salubrious' & 'really good' I'm not shitting ya, It's a fairly modern building with a big log burner & an endless supply of native firewood. There's a proper kitchen, big dining/drinking area, a bunkroom with about 6 beds & a couple of twin bedrooms. We can even arrange to have a supply of beer waiting for us in the chiller.
Those that want to come on the ride but have a morbid fear of sleeping bags could stay at the Matawai pub, it's about 45min riding before the Station.
18/19 Aug is good with me. If we decide to do Motu-Waikaremoana, once we have a tentative date I'll call up Rob & Ann & check that the shearers quarters are available, they usually are around this time of year.

It's getting to the stage where I'm embarrassed to ask TNZ for the Scrambler again - I've borrowed one for 4 ADV rides and a Tour already.
Given it lots of press and interweb coverage - but there is a point where it's ...you know.
If I'm taking the Buell it will be subject to the weather and conditions. The heavily treaded road tyres are miserable on wet gravel. They are 90% Road Bias. OK on dry. They just roll over the top if it's slippery and it's a shitful time - and as yet there are no knobbies available in the correct size.
See what eventuates.
And apart from that - I haven't GOT a sleeping bag.
Find us a pub Clint. (With an ironing board for the petticoats)

The Matawai is an interesting and historic old country pub with a bit of a museum around the walls of the bar. Even has a stuffed 2 headed lamb.

Could you put different wheels on it?
Not on the front - would foul the chin spoiler and muffler (weird bike huh - front wheel fouling the Muffler) - and the belt drive buggers up the back wheel options.
Like I say - if the conditions are fair - it's cool - if its NZ rain - it's doable - but it's not much fun. Will it tuck will it tuck will it tuck.
There is a 160 wide rear by avon that some guys reckon is OK - I see a rubber band on an egg when I look at the skinny thing.
I have the gene that likes fat rear tyres.

I'm thinking of doing it on this - subject to appropriate setting-up and a "scare-factor" test on gravel first.
Minimum requirements are DP tyres both ends and probably a fork brace (skinny forks).
19" front DP tyre no probs, 16" rear - ummm...........
Suspension may be the no-go hurdle. Front is air assist, so can pump up to prevent bottoming, and might have a quick look for stiffer springs. But I suspect it might be hard to get rid of the feeling on gravel that I'm pushing a soft noodle around. Rear is "full-floater" with preload but no other adjustments, so not much (cheap) can be done there.

Those Super Tenere's are actually quite peaky, and not that easy to ride.
Have you tried a DR? Much more civillised (engine counter-balancer makes it smoother) than the LC4. Mind you, I kinda like my LC4 (it brings out the hooligan in me). I really liked the big Husky when I had it up north too - it's probably got the best single cylinder donk I've ever ridden.

But what irks is I have the road legal parts of that bike already in the Buell - apart from the ability to fit Knobby tyres, The Xb12X's mass centralisation offers similar handling to the SM950 I tested.

Funnily enough Wairangi near Arowhana where the overnight stop is marked is another station I know well, a family friend managed it for years, an expedition up though there would be a good summer trip.
Would you bastards please stop putting up pics of the 950 SuperEnduro, I'm trying to save up for a workshop/house & you're not bloody making it easy :)
How much for the seester?
No use to you, you wouldn't be able to catch her, she's way faster on gravel than you are :bleh:

No disrepect to Dave, but that's waaaay more bike than he needs on gravel.
Me, on the other hand...
Mr 3rd person would like to feign indignation and point out that his attitude and general disposition to dirt recklessness is tempered by the fact that he's on expensive loaners that he wants to be able to loaner again. Or his own 20k tractor.
Give me a bike that I'm not shitting myself about scratching up and I'll keep a lot closer to you cahants. :motu:
But yer right that ktm wouldn't be it. A 3.5k Twin like that DR would. That would run 60 horsepower? TKCs and a trip to Norm Cobb and Like a bad suit, sunshine.

So we can confirm the 18th and 19th August for this ride?
Clint what is the maximum number that can be accommodated at the shearers quarters, as I am sure that this trip will fill up

Here here. When they start making a 18l tank for one my wife is working the streets till I can afford one - well maybe not :innocent:. Serious cool toy but way more bike than I will ever be able to afford or need.

Ahhhh - very big single pot not a twin. 50hp according to the link. Pitty they didnt stick a twin in it but thems the breaks. An uprated DR Big chassis with a nice narrow angle twin i.e. in the middle between a weestrom and DR650 would be worth a test ride.

I got over 150k out of a tank on the 950SE before the warning light came on.
If you babied it, you'd prolly get 180k.

Thanks - I didn't look that closely - and I agree about the DL650 - but I Can't justify the expense (DL DR) - when it's the type of riding I do 5 or 6 days a year - and I already have a bike that's quite capable of doing it - just not as fast as my mates with dedicated 21" knobby machines (or they are freaks like Stretch.)
The buell would be as good on dirt roads as a wee - if you could get the *&^@#&) tyres. The only time I'd hesitate to take it off the seal is in big wet. And that's only because of the rubber.

I want closer to 300 than 200. Going to get a IMS for the DR when we get back from Sweden in October.

Swap them for their bike i.e. give them the buell and then see who's the "slow" one - oh wait that may back fire :dodge:
One day I'll get to the other island for a ride with you guys. This trip looks like it will cover some interesting ground - down the middle of the Hui/Rauku ranges.

5th July 2007, 11:56
It shakes at idle, and you can feel some vibes through your feet when you first get on it.
After a while you don't notice.
After the 3rd twist the throttle power stand or throwing it through a set of flip flops or pulling a two finger rolling stoppie - you don't care.
Some folks can't get past it, doesn't bother me a jot. In fact it amuses me. Co-pilot seems to enjoy it.

The limit would be 12 people.
Since the Motu-Waikaremoana ride is currently leading the poll & no-one seems to have a problem with the 18/19th August for a date I shall go forth & organise this with another thread & a calendar entry.

I say go for it
But a suggestion as numbers are limited that you don't advertise the meeting place and time etc, as it may attract people that simply show up, which is normally ok, but due to the restrictions for accommodation it would need to be somewhat controlled :dodge:
We can tell those that are doing the ride via email/PM
I'm in anyway :yes:and I would guess Ducatijim (lives in Reporoa) and BusaJim would be in, as would most of the riders on the other adventure assault trips
I'm about 50/50 on this. Will decide over the next few days.

ClintIf it's been done on a Road King surely it can be done on a lil old honda.
I'm keen to do this but I wouldn't want to hold you guys up.

I should mention that the aforementioned Road King has also been ridden across the Simpson Desert & apparently suffered some damage going through the Motu. If you've ridden heaps of gravel on the CBR you might be OK but as I said it's about as rough as a 'gravel road' can get before it starts getting called a '4wd track'

Since the Coromandel is coming second in the polling, someone could step up to the plate & organise a ride up there sometime after MMMMM, go on, you know you want to!
A great feature of Coromandel is that those without adventure rigs can hire them from Coromoto in Whitianga.

Gimme a day or two to try and persuade the boss I'm allowed out to the Motu run first than I'll do a Coromandel ride plan. Can't be hard, turn left at the bombays and follow the trail of remuera tractors.........

Yes, I've been hankering to ride to Port Jackson for some years now(done it in the car many times) and Ive never organised a ride before. Gotta be a first time eh.
I've never been afraid of gravel/shingle and my old driveway was almost a 4wd track, I used to navigate a ZZR1100 up and down it, so I reckon Im up to it on my 600. I'm only worried about getting lost on roads Ive never ridden. Like I said, I wouldnt want to hold you guys up on the ride.
BTW Dave, How much to hire a DR650 or the DR250 for a day? I couldnt find the day hire prices on the site.

Large commercial fishing trawler currently stevedoring on Princess wharf best bet.

I also like going over to the east side,(pt Charles, and the ride to Stony Bay).
Its a shame that the east and west tips are only joined by a walking track.
Accom can be DOC sites, or possibly the farm backpackers.
The east side has some chalets at Stony Bay. The best time to be there is when the Pohutokawas are in bloom. Magic.
Hey Goblin, the CBR would do the west side easy. Sometimes, on the Stony bay side the last 5-10 km gets a bit rough.
I don't think that road gets much attention maintenance wise. The Coro boys would have the update.
