I agree with every thing said so far. Money should go into a truly NZ team. NZ have had there day in the americas cup. I think it's all a bit of a farce anyway, none of the teams is truly reprisenting their nation.

Far from it, the kids out in their Lasers, Optimists, and adults racing their yachts in foul weather have my total respect.(25knt + winds, sails hauled in,and storm wear on is TRUE yachting). that there is no way to show what the return of the spent millions by our Gov. is. They are telling us that it is a brilliant way to promote NZ and our boat builders. I would love to argue it, but nobody can give us some accurate figures, as there is none. Is the NZ boatbuldres getting more sales as a reult of the Cup or as a result of their own advertising or because they do such a bloody good job? Is it a combination of this and something else? What would have happened if we would not have spent the millions on the campaign? Hard to say. And thats why they can spend the money. They are the best bullshitters around and know how to turn anything to their advantage.

So perhaps the whole thing is a advertising campaign for Labour???

Yes, I found the yachting extremely boring. Yes, I found the money thrown about by some of the individuals involved to be obscene. Yes I found the ease with which allegiances were bought to be offensive....

...but I actually think the potential income stream that could have been generated by a NZ win almost justifies the Government expenditure. But for some poor decision making and a sail failure NZ be looking at a huge windfall in years to come.

Sure, I'd rather watch something more exciting but I can't think of another event that would generate anywhere near the income of hosting an America's Cup regatta. The Government would have to tip in $34m to get less than a weeks worth of MotoGP/A1GP etc action with little TV coverage outside the actual event.

The America's Cup goes on for frikkin' months and the worlds media seek to pad out coverage by featuring more about the host country than just 3km laps of the track during a 45min bike or car race.

$34m sounds like a lot of dosh to you and me but in the world of advertising it's not a lot of money. Coke/Pepsi/General Motors etc spent that much on just a few minutes exposure during the Superbowl.
