Wet weather problems

Whenever it rains the old TL engine seems to run rough and has trouble keeping idle. Just wondering if anyone else has this problem and or any solutions?

just a random guess but your not getting water into the fuel somehow? i would imagine that causing some issues

Lots of possibilities... water getting into electrical connections
Getting in around spark plugs...
Water in Fuel...

Suggestions welcome - I don't have the answers. TL owners may know of particular weaknesses the bike has re water - and where to check first but I'd suggest around the spark plugs first. Reasonably likely and by far the quickest.

Most likely the front plug cap mate, they get water in them cos they point straight forward. (I think)

Easy to check, just bath it in CRC and take it for a hoon in the wet, or turn the hose on it at idle in the driveway, if it runs fine, get a new cap, if it shits out, I'm wrong:second:

My TL when it sat in the rain for some time ran like shit, drained the tank, refueled an away she went. Fuel caps don't seem too water tight.

If the miss is only in the wet and not still there when it dries out might be electrics.

Thanks for info guys, I think ill drop it into holeshot and get a mega service done to see if it irons it out. Im not very mechanically minded, "i think the sparkplugs are somewhere between the two wheels right??"

Agreed on the front plug.........i have to be real careful even when washing mine.

who is the best bike shop in auckland for servicing?? and when booking in for servicing what do the actual do appart from oil and filter changes?

Not sure about the others but holeshot have quoted about$400 - $500 for a full service - fluids, plugs, filters and oil. Its been a while since i have taken a bike for a service but I thought it was reasonable.

It can also be worth looking at the HT leads,with replacement due to age or cutting the ends off and threading them back into the coil and caps.

You could do a basic service of those parts yourself with some pointers.
The one thing you do have to watch on the TL is the very weak thread on the sump plug through.

I had this problem on my VTR1000 - I lurvd the thrill of riding in peak traffic in the wet, with the bike running on one and occasionally two cylinders!
It turned out the rubber boot on the front sparkplug lead had a very small tear in it, caused by the cap of the sparkplug when the boot was put on slightly crooked. The crazy thing was that the tear was down inside the sparkplug well, and I couldn't see any way water could get in there. But.... I put a new boot on and the problem went away.
