Well I made it there and back. Left home last Fri at midday, stopped Rotorua for a new WOF and then off to Wellington. Damp and cool all the way down, made it to the ferry hour and a half early and they put me on the 6-15 one.
Nap for an hour on ferry and left Picton at 9-30 in the rain. Got colder and wetter the further south I got. Down the coast toward Kaikoura I started to notice the cold big time and realised that I noticed a couple of 55k corners a little too late!
11pm and after about half an hour of searching found a friendly motelier with a room.
Mid morning I headed south and for about an hour through Cheviot all there was was snow! Must have been cold because all I could feel was a cold piece of metal down my back, bloody titanium!
Made the Rangitata river mouth by early afternoon and spent the next few days helping junior out on the farm.
Headed home Wednesday, into Cycletreads CHCH for a new back tyre, once again these guys rock!
What do you know, high winds north of Kaikoura and through Seddon, what fun.
Spent the night at Blenhiem then the next at Picton and across on the ferry first thing Friday am. Home at 5pm...yeeha
The things I learnt from this trip...
1) I'm not as tough as I thought I was but probably wiser than I used to be.
2) When it's REALLY cold no matter how much gear you wear you will still feel it.
3) Baehr heated gloves are the bees knees!

Sounds like a fun blat to get the wind in your hair.
Why is it that as we get older we feel the cold? I don't get it! I remember running around in winter in a tshirt and jeans and feeling just fine . . . :gob:
I've now been reduced to wearing thermals in winter in BRISBANE!! Hardly the coldest place on the planet.
Are you and yours Cold Kiwi-ing? I'd like to have a look at your super dooper gloves.
