View Full Version : Karapoti Adventure Ride, Sunday 8 July
Balrog
6th July 2007, 18:41
This Sundays looking like the weather is going to be .... not raining
Looking at doing a Karapoti run.
Start at around 10:30am (ish) at the Rimutaka Caltex service station.
Head pretty much in from the Akatarawa side and exit at the other end.
Expecting it to be wet, slippery and scary.
So I thought I'd take the GS :)
If you fancy coming along, see you on Sunday
We have two riders confirmed so far. If the weather is really bad we may postpone.
Cheers Jim

I'm sorry
you cant do this ride this Sunday as my son and I are already doing it.
we are intending to devirginise our new dt230 (I'll bring the 660)
Pick another Sunday
or .. alternatively we could do it "backwards" and meet you at the Service station..
it will be veeeery veeery slippery
(we may do some reconnaissance from Prm end on Sat aft - if its really really slippery we will woose out and bring our old shitter trail bikes on Sunday)

Have a good ride guys, I have had many a fun trip in there, first on my DR350 with my son on his DS80 (we used to go in from the Upper Hutt side and the very first time we went in we got through the gorge and he wanted to turn round and go home!) to some wonderful rides on my DR400 with my boy on his (then) DRZ125 and other friends who we introduced to the area.
Would love to be with you this weekend, not sure about taking the 990 in there though without some nobblies on!
Marks have a good one, break in the DT (in a good sense of course)!

Sounds good, providing forecast is OK tomorrow I'm a definite starter.
Will be planning a couple of small side trips on the Pram side which might also be of interest to others.
1/ Check out newly rebuilt Orange hut.
2/ Short blat back along Titi ridge (before heading down Perhams road), to Whakatiki forest which is a small pine plantation. There is a point of interest there for those who have GPS receivers or are into geocaching.
I'll be in for a look around. I've only been through once and I wasn't to sure
of my way around so I kept pretty much to the main road.

Glen and I have decided to take our trail bikes in from the Prm end with the intention of being at the Karapoti end by 11am (which we presume is about when you guys will be there??)
Anyone who wants to come through with us is welcome to meet us outside the quad place at the foot of Perrins Rd. We intend to leave there by 9.30 at the latest.

on the plate and license :) Looking forward to more rides. Word of warning, don't try and ride 1000kms in a weekend on the DRZ, it's painful.. though Zukin says you eventually get used to it, I have my doubts ;p
btw, fouled another plug today. go me. I need to get that sorted. Also stuck a new rear on today and went to Red Rocks to scrub it in, heaps more traction in the sand :) Should be good enough for the wet clay of Karapoti.

Ooops, i dropped my photos off, here they are again.
Orange hut is a bit of an icon in this area, but has been deliberately burnt down three times I think. Looks like it's been rebuilt with concrete blocks this time.
The Titi ridge side trip is to a point I have a geocache to mark an interesting map point. There is a great view of Kapiti by taking a short walk (so bring cameras). You can also carry on from there down Hydro Valley (not to be confused with Hydro Road ) which takes you down to Orange Hut and provides a different bit of scenery. From Orange hut it is a short hop back to the main "Pram track" so that would be my suggestion for a bit of a diversion. There is one slightly tricky river crossing between Orange Hut and the main track in that there is a short but steepish climb out of it. It's easier to do it from the Orange Hut side as the slope is a descent which is easier. However it's not as bad as I'm probably making it sound.
So providing the weather doesn't suddenly turn, which is unlikely, I look forward to meeting up at Caltex as suggested.

Ok, I've been up for a few hours (running on Northern Hemisphere time) and the tintops are all frosted over. Looks like we won't be able to cry-off for weather or bad light. Can I do this 2up on the eggbeater or are we talking major rutting and shitholes (over the motor) ?

If you haven't done this route before, then he says best not to do it 2 up the first time, unless you are a really really confident rider. Is going to get to be pretty tough going in places probably. And it will be quite slippery from all the rain we have had recently.
He'll see you all there soon.

humbling experience today - set off feeling concerned for those riding bigger machines across the very slipprery Pram Track - even offered to ride as tail end charlie. It turned out I struggled on my little DR - albeit on dual sport tyres which filled up and became useless quickly in the clay.
Big ups - I salute you Jim (1150GS ADV), Pampa(F650Dakar) and Tim with his daughter riding pillion (Triumph Scrambler) on those big machines.
Thanks to all for your company and special thanks to MarkS who kept an eye out for me after I had the front wash out on a down hill section ahead of the steepest part of the Pram Track

Great photos guys, wish i could have been there on my DR, it must be 4 1/2 years now since I have ridden in there.
When you went in from the Upper Hutt, you went through the gorge, onto the gravel road to the clearing, did you cross the river there?
How did the GS go BusaJim? tTat would have looked impressive going up the hill after the river crossing.
I decided to start my DR up to burn the spiders off(!) and found that it had a flat battery! Then I moved to my boys KDX and found that I had to drain the carb as the fuel was off, but got it going in the end.
Steve are you thinking of doing the MMMMM ride next month?

I have been through there with a guy with balding trials tires on, he got through but it would have to be very dry as there are patches of clay / mud which could catch you out. Give it a go though!

Up to the clearing/river & you'll be fine, even in winter. It's the pram Track, past the river crossing that's the issue. Polished, rutted clay that really requires dual-purpose tyres at the least.
Get a permit from GWRC & you can take a detour from the Taka's whenever the desire takes you...

Hey young1, GS went sweet as.
I was a bit worried about the start of the Param track.
Last time I was there I lost traction going up one of the rock/clay combinations
and started going backwards.
No problems this time, rode the bike up faster, had the tyre pressures down a bit more and it
went up very nicely.
I found it pretty tricky on the slippery clay. Little front washes and the odd
sliding into a rut when you intended to ride past it got the blood pumping.
Good fun though
:)

When I saw that rear tyre you had on, I thought you would have a little bit of fun. Sometimes a big heavy bike with some bite in the tyre, a low centre of gravity and an extra bum on the seat will go some places that are a struggle on the lightweight stepladder brigade. Certainly it's not so far to fall in any case. Managed to put that theory into practice with a nice downhill biff right near the end. Luckily no damage to machine or passengers, so all good.
Had a great time, great bunch of guys and sorry if my mobile road block got in anyones way or scared anyone. Still not sure whether to try and improve the Eggbeater suspension and ground clearance for a more offroady feel, or just keep putting gas in the tank. C U
ps Anyone doing the MMMMMMMM trip mid-August?

Hi Pampa,
The cheap Chinese bikes are getting better and cheaper all the time. I sold those two to Mark and because his expectations were low, he's real happy (special case!). I've stopped importing the things for a number of reasons but my advice would be that if your friend has a low budget and is prepared to spend it on something with a zero resale value (similar to buying beer), they could have 6-12 months fun for maybe $2000.(similar to buying beer!)
It may be better to invest a bit more gold in a low mileage bike (how much did you pay for the DRZ250, Jim) and this could be sold later with less total cost and would be a better ride.

Hi limbimtimwim - IMHO dual sport / adventure tyres are suitable on the PRAM when it is dry - when the clay is wet tyres with sharper knobs would be better - I plan to check out Vee rubber for my DR350 - cheers Aslan

Rather impressed with the ability of those on the bigger bikes, I get nervous even just thinking about such things. Managed OK on my DRZ but one off toward the end, bit of a slippery downhill and pretty much only remember being splatted to the ground and the bike on it's side facing uphill. Suspect I inadevertently touched the back brake!
Here's a plot from my GPS overlaid on Google earth. I'm fairly impressed with the sensitivity of my new supa dupa Garmin 60CSX, not only does it have no problem under tree cover but I was carrying it in the inside pocket of my motorbike jacket as well.

Just a matter of starting up Google Earth, connecting the GPSr to the USB and importing the data and it is all drawn for you. I have added the placemarks and comments on top of the whole lot. By zooming in I can see these points quite clearly. In fact I can even see the spot where I fell off (note the sudden change in direction :o)

Going into Orange Hut is where we got split up a bit. The group I was with went to the end of the actual Pram track where it joins Whahatiki road (just before the top of Perhams Road), at the point marked "waited a long time". Then headed to the pointer showing the Pine Forest, down into Hydro Valley and to the hut. We then rode the short section back out to the Pram track and retraced the last section back to Perhams Road. Nice easy bit of track through there but lots of other tracks joining it. Mostly they are off to individual pylon towers and are dead ends but some are quite a way in. I prefer to come down Hydro valley like we did, it's easier to stay on the right track going downhill.

One of those things that a lot of people tend to dismiss "I don't need one of those" - sure, then those people shouldn't buy them. However once you start learning what it's all about you almost wonder how you ever managed to make it out the front door without one!
There is a lot of variety and functionality available and you would need to determine what your primary use of it will be, which first means a bit of a research and learning about what they will do. A couple of forums to look at and ask questions are
http://forums.gps.org.nz/ (look in Traditional Outdoors and Hardware), and
http://www.advrider.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=37 of course.
The one I have is a Garmin gpsmap 60csx which is ideal for what I want, tramping, motorcycling, geocaching, and navigation functions. It carries a full set of NZ roadmaps, topographical maps, and point's of interest (nearest petrol station, atm, food etc) and will do auto-routing to a selected destination. If I had the money I would also have a Garmin Zumo for Car/Bike navigation, bigger screen, voice prompts and bluetooth capability, but they are pretty expensive.
The sensitivity of the 60CSX (also 76CSX and Zumo - which all have the SiRF 3 chipset) is remarkable. Not just useful for heavy tree cover, travel in gorges etc, but also means it gets satellite lock quickly and gives a far more detailed record of your trail. It runs on two AA batteries, either alkaline (15-20hrs) or NiMH rechargable.
Best price for a "NZ" model with Garmin warranty I have seen in Wellington is $950 at http://www.triginstruments.co.nz/catalog/ (caution - their quoted prices do not include GST)
If you are OK with a parrallel imported one (and I was) then $680 at
http://www.finda.co.nz/business/listing/3xc/kiwigps/ who is someone I would recommend without hesitation.
And yes, I am very biased toward Garmins

If you are not too sure about GPS's then get something like a eTrex Legend off TradeMe to see if you like them.
I paid $245 (unopened, in box) for my last one.
Full searchable NZ maps for $100 or so.

More the merrier :)
Be great to see some others coming along as well.
We've just been talking about getting the GS's into some sand to get some
practice.
Probably meet at Caltex Rimutaka at 10:30 like last time.
Head over the Karapoti, stop for a coffee and then play dig the GSA out of the
Beach :sweatdrop

Glen and I were going to have a play at this end of the Mungatooks tomorrow morning on the DT and XT so while we won't attempt to come through to Karapoti (crap tires on the DT) we'll aim to wait for you at the same place we all got back together again after we got separated last Sunday (about 12ish?). Then we can maybe follow you guys to the beach.

Well that was a whole lot more scary than last time.
I think frozen mud gives more traction than wet mud :)
Good fun though, some offs, some scary moments.
After the Karapoti a few people had to get home so it was
just Mark and I that ended up having a go at the beach.
Heaps of fun, bit scary at first as the front tyre moves around
all the time but after a few minutes the pace started hotting up.
On the way back ( and after a few attempts at donuts ) we ended up
bumping into Mr Plod who was busy dealing with a bunch of people treating
the beach like a race track ( not us ..... at that point in time ).
Mark got talking to one of the officers and we discovered that its ok to
drive/ride on the beach from peka peka right up to wanganui.
Which begs the question ..
Do you think we can ride all the way up there on our bikes?
So if anybody has any info on if that would be possible, let us know
Here's a few pics of the ride today.
The 1st few are not to good, can't seem to get the camera to take good photos in low light.

Out front of Paraparaumu and Waikanae the Kapiti District Council has bylaws prohibiting vehicles on the beach. North of there I have done most parts up to Himitangi and its reasonably easy riding with nice wide sandy beaches. Problem is the rivers like Otaki and Manawatu are so friggin big you've got to ride inland to cross a bridge then go back to the beach.

Great pics, looks a way lot more slippery than last week. Probably just as well I stuck to walking today, I had just been for a wander up Canon's Point walkway when I saw you all. Would love to get the bike in there.

another great day - on a very slippery Pram Track.
Thanks for your companuy BusaJim, Pampa, GarryW, KSlider, BulaBill - another great day.
Re BusaJim and MarkS' comments earlier in this thread about the beach - I've ridden on an Adventure Ride organised by Central Districts in 2005 from Peka Peka to Te Horo and Hokio Beach to Foxton Beach. Twas a bit tricky crossing the stream at Hokio - where I went across was very deep - luckly not to have the beemer get lungs full of water

Hi all, another excellent ride on another perfect day with a very good bunch of guys, by the way thanks for all the help I thought u might appreciate the work out of lifting 200Kg a couple of times. No really, thanks I would've struggled to pick up the bike alone so it make it much more enjoyable.
Very nice photos (didn't post mines are all out-of-focus so I didn't post 'em) and good report Garry.
Cheers,

Mate and his son were riding in this area back in 2001. Son had an old bike, of course it broke down. Too hard to tow out, too far to push it. They hid the bike, dad doubled son back to vehicle and they went home.
Rang a friend up with Double Cab 4 X 4 who agreed to go in with them to pick the bike up. Wife and daughter thought they would go for the ride.
They got in there, found the bike, put it on back, driving out they rolled the 4 X 4. Luckily no one hurt, a couple of them were quite shocked.
Dad had to run out for help, Police had to be involved to go in and get them all out!

Pampa, I had 3 goes myself with the wheels up hill and sliding in the mud till I spun the bike down hill. I was hoping a quad may come along but alas it didnt.
It was good fun rolling in a Bavarian Mud Wallow.

Regrettably we weren't there to help, almost take same track though. I'm quite pleased with the ride despite of the couple of times I didn't do the right thing , I would've expected to struggle more considering how slippery it was. Are u OK now or still sore?
Cheers,
Pablo
