i am having a discusion on another motorbike forum, and the subject that came up was food and how awfull it is(surprise surprise), and it came to my notice that they all have fast food joints in them!?!?
now forget the old argument on health for a minute. my question is, not having needed or will need to go to hospital here *touches wood*, so i dont know :do they have fast food joints in the hospitals here, ie; burger king, mc donalds, etc?

Not in Perth or Brisbane either.
Though they all have Ronald McDonald Houses for families of ill children.

I beg to differ actually. Hospital food (as bad as it supposedly is) is not too bad... a lot of effort goes into it..

thats not much different is it really! i mean adverising junk food in hospitals, esp aimed directly at kids. think about it, mum is tired and the kids are hungry so a bit of whining and the mum gives them maccy dees!
not a good promotion is it, its almost as if the hospitals want people to be unhealthy!
cynical? moi?

Is it gone? Good job if so.
Funny story on that....a few years ago, a young niece was certain that Maccas was so bad for you that 'they' had put a hospital up around one!! Sensible girl, she was.

I work at auckland hospital, and the closest thing to fast food there is a muffin break cafe (does that even count as fast food). The staff cafeteria actually serves pretty decent food as well.

Yep they closed it down due to the parents feeding the kids so much junk food and not getting the children to eat healthy food to get the kids better.
I went in there once whilst I had a family member in Starship and was shocked at how much food, that some parents were buying from there and giving it to the kids (kids who were patients wearing hospital clothes)
I think it was originally set up for the parent/s to grab a quick feed, while they took a break from their children lying upstairs in their bed. For those children staying in hospital long stay. There wasn't anywhere nearby to grab a feed hence McDonald's putting in their takeaways shop.
But as society became more health-wise - McDonald's was slowly being pushed out of the hospital.
Ronald McDonald House is totally separate from Starship.

I've unfortunately seen the inside of a few hospitals recently (not as a patient) and I haven't seen any McDonalds etc in them. On the other hand, I don't think the food that's available to the general public is any better than McDonald's. The cafe in Whangarei Hospital has pies, sausage rolls, sweet slices and vending machines in the corner selling chips, sugary drinks and lollies.
They do have sandwiches but every single one of them has cold meat in it, and the sandwich cabinet is right next to the pie cabinet so the sandwiches end up luke warm all day. Just right for pregnant women and people with compromised immune systems!
When my Dad was in Whangarei hospital recently they seemed to feed him well. The food was very plain and old fashioned (just how he likes it). Things like stew, mashed potato and boiled carrots. Even then the old guy in the bed opposite was complaining that the food was too exotic. Apparently they had put herbs in the stew! :shit:
The Staff Cafeteria at Auckland Hospital still sells Toast Soldiers YEAH!!
What the blooody hell is a "toast soldier"?

I actually enjoy airline food...to the extent I ask for 3rds and 4th helpings! Always a bemused look on the airline staff!
And I enjoy hospital food as well... guess I got a taste for the stuff when I was a little'un in Princes Mary before it became Starship!
Funnily enuff, when I was working at Armourguard I would do the rounds picking up the dosh and McD Starship hospital was one of my pick ups. I had a convo with the various managers about the irony of a McD in a children's hospital... they could see the irony themselves ... the killer one day was when a kid who was a patient standing in line heard us talking like that...
and said "not to worry, we'll probably all end up in the adult hospital for eating all this later!" Nary a truer word spoken...from the mouth of babes...

Auckland hospitals staff cafeteria's kiwi breakfasts are pretty decent as well, had one the other day..... havent had a chance to have some of those "toast soldiers" yet though. Gota sweet talk to ladys behind the display case warmer things to give you a bigger serving.. I heard some talk about a subway coming to Auckland hospital, but I suspect its just a rumor.

Christchurch hospital where I work hasn't got one, and they've undergone a huge makeover to try and reduce sugar and fat content of foods. There isn't a single cold drink sold in any of the vending machines / cafes that has sugar in them any more.

Genuine Toast soldiers are strips of toast....
However there are variations.. the hospital ones are toast strips, thinly spread with marmite, and topped with a large amount of melted cheese.
These are then placed under those glass display warmer thingies with the heat lamps, and make them look just the best. They go best with Chocolate Primo's.
To transform them into my longtime favorite....simply place small pieces of bacon on top before grilling.......BINGO....'Mousetraps'...Yummy

ever tried PRISON FOOD?
I would hope prison food is shit.
I've only had positive experiences with hospital food. This may in part be due to the fact that when you're very hungry you can wolf most things down. I had a nice corn beef meal if I remember correctly.
Gravy'n'all.

I'm with Cola .... hospital food is very very good. It has a job to do, healing and providing nutrition without crap. The presentation is appalling but the food has a lot of expertise and work put into it.
Most people will moan and bitch on principle, the other half are trying to kill themselves on a daily basis with fat, sugar and the other stuff fast food outlets call food.

I've had hospital food in over 10 different hosps over the years, and I call it "Grandma Food".
Plain but tasty, does the job. Just like my Gran cooks.
The worst institution food I have ever come across was the crap they fed someone I knew in a rest home. Tasteless, cheap and nasty mush. Pig food, really. I would have thought they'd make a bit more effort there - the longer the oldies get, the more money the proprietors make from them . . .
