Dutch Political Party Wants to Normalize Pedophilia

(CNSNews.com) - Members of a fringe political party in the Netherlands, who recently won a court case allowing them to field candidates for seats in the Dutch Parliament, believe it should be permissible for adults to have sex with children.

Norbert DeJonge, secretary of the political party PNVD, a Dutch acronym that translates into "brotherly love, freedom and diversity," told Cybercast News Service that there is nothing wrong with pedophilia or bestiality, the latter of which is legal in the Netherlands, as long as the child or the animal involved, demonstrate consent.

"[L]et's take a child that isn't able to speak. Just like an animal -- even a baby is able to smile or to cry when it respectively doesn't like something or does like something," DeJonge said. "So the question is not whether an animal or a child can show its resent[ment] or give its consent. The question is whether the adult will notice the expression of the animal or the child and what its feelings are."

The PNVD party is currently lobbying to change Dutch law that would lower the age for children to grant sexual consent from 16 to 12.. The party would eventually like to see all age of consent laws eliminated.

The Hague District Court recently refused to ban the party from the country's Nov. 22 elections, stating that it is "the right of the voter to judge the appeal of political parties," according to the Associated Press.

In the 2003 elections, candidates in the Netherlands' multi-party system were reportedly able to secure seats in Parliament with as few as 65,000 votes, but the A.P. reported on July 17 that pollsters were estimating that the PNVD would receive less than 1,000 votes this year.

The PNVD party platform states that children should be able to "make their own decisions," regarding sex and that the laws preventing sexual activity are useless.

"[T]here are other laws in our country that already state that it is not allowed for people to force themselves upon children or adults." said DeJonge. "So we don't need the current laws that specify an age of consent. There are other laws that can already be used to take on the problematic contacts that [exist] ... It's not like the people who really abuse children ... care about the law."

Bill Saunders of the U.S.-based Family Research Council (FRC) disagreed, arguing that societies cannot legalize crimes just because those crimes exist. "You don't legalize abuse because there is abuse. If there's abuse in society it's a violation of not only the law but the moral code and the way people should behave." he told Cybercast News Service.

The PNVD party treasurer, Ad Van den Berg, was convicted of molesting an 11-year-old boy in 1987. He was reportedly chased from his home by neighbors in Oostvoorne when this became public knowledge last month.

The party also argues for the private possession of child pornography; the right of children to smoke drink and vote at the age of 12, to use "soft" drugs like marijuana at 12 and "hard drugs" like cocaine and heroin at 16. Party members feel this is consistent with their platform that states "people should have as much freedom as possible as long as they don't harm others."

DeJonge, who serves as PNVD secretary, also asserted that since sex can only be learned through experience it is best for an adult to teach a child how to have sex. "Sex is not something you learn by reading a book or by looking at pornography. Sex is something you learn by doing it ... If they choose to engage in this contact with an older person then this may be the best for them."

Saunders countered that just because a person is able to choose a certain action does not mean that the action is proper. In the case of pedophilia, he said, children are harmed.

"One underlying philosophical position here is relativism and that what is good is what a person chooses and that that choice makes it good." he said. "Sexual behavior with children is just clearly a negative thing for those children. No society should permit it, even if a child wanted it."

There are other considerations besides the physical impulses, Saunders said. "[T]here might be some momentary physical pleasure or something, but we are more than our sexual activities and there is psychological and spiritual and physical harm that endures long past some moment of physical pleasure."

DeJonge did concede that parents should have some influence in their children's sex lives. "Any contact should be in harmony with the child's development and it's also important, at least in my opinion, that there should be a certain amount of openness towards the parents of the child." he told Cybercast News Service.

The PNVD also wants to outlaw the eating of animals and advocates for animal rights in general. "The United Nations has the Human Rights Declaration and we think that there should be a similar declaration for animals," said DeJonge.

He said he is angered by how animals are treated. "[T]hey cut off teeth without anesthetics and they cut off tails. That's still legal. It's unbelievable! They're living creatures."

The PNVD secretary said he finds it strange that some people want to outlaw bestiality, which is currently legal in the Netherlands, while having no problem with the killing of animals for food. "[I]t's very strange we kill animals and we treat them like sh** and then we say it's very strange to allow bestiality."

DeJonge said bestiality is not harmful to animals. "I don't think [animals] care. They're having a good time."

But Saunders said DeJonge's views about bestiality "are ludicrous."

"Even on their own level, where is consent involved with a non-rational animal?" he asked.

DeJonge said the PNVD is small, but not the only movement of its kind. "[W]e're currently just the three board members, so that's not a lot of people. We do have other members of course and we do have about 100 people that we keep up to date by email, but most of the people aren't known to us so we have no idea about their age.

"There have been some people who wrote us, saying that they are not pedophiles but that they had sexual contacts as children, and that they experienced them as pleasant. And that they will support us. I don't think people really ask children what they think about," DeJonge concluded.
