Of course it's a scam. You had to ask?

I remember this flavour coming up before, elsewhere, in relation to purchasing motorcycles via eBay, but I can't remember the exact nature of how it went.

I told him that but he reckons the guy is gunna come up with the cash... :spudwhat:

It's the most obvious scam i've seen... shame really as he wants to sell his plymouth so he can buy a bike. he's sick of seeing all the fun i have

I *wish* I could remember how it went, but I have a feeling it was some kind of money-laundering scam. He will come up with the cash, but then something bad will happen...

Perhaps it was a cheque that needed to be banked in your friend's name, and then most of the funds returned, or something. I really can't remember.

But if your friend doesn't turn around and run away *right now*, he's a fool.

Scam alright. Stay well clear. From now watch out for further e-mail messages that seem to come from various foreign banks, Paypal, Mastercard, eBay (you name it) inviting you to up-date your account details....I had a close escape from an Ebay scammer a while ago and since then have had various such false messages trying to get my credit card details. Be warned

But if your friend doesn't turn around and run away *right now*, he's a fool.Yeah, that's it. A "cashiers" (bank) cheque for more than the amount will be sent, (say $7K) and then you have to wire the difference. So they get $4200 for nothing...
I think I've mentioned this before, but a friend of mine in LA advertised his bike, had a similar reply to this, and (knowingly) went along with it, documenting it, etc. Even received the cheque and scanned it for our amusement. He was going to attempt to cash it to get it stamped as fraudulent (thus increasing its value as a momento) but couldn't be stuffed paying the $20 fee and possibly getting a bad record at the bank. He also started to try to play two scammers off against each other, before it all got to be too much bother and lost the fun factor.
The mentalest (?:eek5: ?) thing was that it started as someone trying to buy his bike, then he switched from discussing his bike to it being his pickup, and the 'buyer' didn't even comment on this amazing metamorphosis...

yeah, the scam will probably go like this (had the same idiots try it on when selling my ZX-6R... supposedly to some guy who just couldn't find one in Nigeria!)..

your mate: 'I want $6000 for my car/bike'
idiot:'I will give you $7500 for your car/bike and you will pay the $1500 fee to the shipping agent'
your mate thinks: sweeeeet! 'Ok, send the money to my address
idiot: ' sure thing, we can do this deal as soon as you send the $1000 registration fee'

yeah- RIGHT. i tried to get my scammer to send me a $50 postage and handling fee for organising the $1K rego fee... but I never saw any money!

Its a standard 'nigerian' scam.

Ask for a small deposit first, then say that you are currently in austrailia and ask for more money for fees. With a bit of luck the scammer may actually cough up :)

I feel really sorry for him too coz the only reason he wants to sell is to get another bike :pinch:
he has to sell the plymouth so he can finance it and this is the only bite he's had!
mind you he has got other toys, like his suzuki jeep with a capri V6 and L'cruiser diffs.

Selling an old car like that always takes a while.

I must have spent three or four months advertising my '63 AP5 Valiant before I ended up selling it for about $6K less than it owed me.

For you haters of scams, you might get some pleasure from these guys.

419eater.com (http://www.419eater.com)

Although they got /.ed today and their forums seem to be down for maintainence so it might be worth leaving it til tomorrow to look out. To sum up they've made an art of sucessfully scamming the scammers.
