Did many of you here ride the 100 yesterday? I thought it was an awesome event . Having those top guys there was impressive and to hear Damian King at the prizegiving say that he had to let Cody and Hurls by as they were flying surprised me .Hope Hurley is not too bad after his crash .After all that rain the track was pretty good I thought.
500 people at the prizegiving wasn't a bad effort either.

i dont think there was too many of us there, Cheese & Myself were both there, i thought it was excellent and it was a lot dryer than i expected. i was a bit gutted to only get 3 laps in, apparently if you come in 5 mins after the leader has lapped you, you dont get a 4th lap, but never mind as i feel pretty knackered now anyway. this event is the most well organised large event ive EVER been to, no hiccups, the scruteneering line wasnt even a particularly long wait esp considering there were 350 bikes, just everything ran smoothly.. apart from the start line, i dont know who crashed, but there were plenty of them, bikes on the ground left right and centre, luckyly i got through!

cheers to all involved

Welll...........

Being my first proper race I was quite nervous. I lined up with Sam (boooom) and was ready to go. I thought I'd hang back on teh start as I didn't want to get stuck in a pile up, but as the race started a hole opened in front of me so I thought fuck it and gunned it, I managed to get into a good line, but then 350 bikes and one coner caused a massive pile up. So I managed to get around and was picking my way though some people, the pack took about 3 kms to start to seperate and then I was spending most of my time passing people instead of getting passed. I got stuck behind a chick on a CR for about 3km, then finally got past her to be stopped at the first hill climb where there was a massive pile up. So it took about 10 mins for that to clear so I had a rest and waited for that to clear. When I got to go up I couldn't really see what the problem was and how they crashed, but hey it happens so I carried on.

I was doing ok until I took a corner wide and got stuck in the mother of all bogs. Someone had obviously hit it before and dug a hole and then a guy came behind me and was stuck too, luckily my cr was pretty easy to pull out, but his RMZ was stuck good, so after we got both bikes out I was quite knackered. I managed to hurt my back in the process too.

So I pulled into the pits, fueled up and carrie3d on. Second lap was much bette as you had and Idea of teh track and knew what was comming. Thre was an aweseom section with some great hill climbs and then a steep downhill.

the ground is a pumice sandy clay type surface and it is really great to ride on. the rain seemed to have made a few boggy holes, but the rest of the track was fantastic to ride on.

I came in after my second lap and could have gone for a third, but they said the race leader was 25 mins away and whatever place I was currently would stand. I was completelt shagged and my back was aching. so I called it quits and waited for sam to come in and I was going to help him get back out as fast as possible to get a good result. Unfortunaltely he was about 1 min too late and pretty stuffed too so we both packed up.

The dinner was bloody great. I met some awesome people and had a great time.

If you were thinking about doing it and were worried about it might be a bit full on, don't me. I'm a pretty average rider and I managed to do what I thought was pretty good.

I got a placing of 290 out of 350.

I'll be back next year for sure and I'll be working on my fittness before hand a bit more this time around. the race is very demanding.

Top effort from the club!!

Well I was impressed in my riding buddies result, 2nd in class and 44th overall! Bloody good effort I reckon! I was going to go with him but changed my mind because WMMC had a ride on and I'm off next weekend for the two day trailblazer.

Good on you Cheese for giving it a go and a great report.

Yeah I think I had a mr king come up behind me (I think) and I was making every effort to get out of the way for anyone that was alot faster than me and I got a shove for my efforts and a "move cunt" screamed at me. There was a guy I was chasing down in front of me and he got rammed off his bike!!

So my advice is move for the fast people, and if you are uming and arring about giving it a go, go for it. Its such a well organised and run event. I had so much fun.

Other things I need to to, get my fort softened, jesus it felt like I had no suspension on the front at some stages!!

I think I want to go get into a few of the GNCC rounds now. I got the bug big time.

I let Cody lap me just before the finish in the big pines as I could hear him coming-that 450 was loud. The bikes in front of me didn't respond as quickly even when he was blipping the throttle so he had to follow for a minute in the tight stuff til it was clear.I talked to him at the prizegiving about lappers and he said he was held up a bit but didn't want to risk tangling with anyone,he deserved the win in my books.

Great report cheese! Was good to read how it was from someone I have rode with so I can assess how I might do. Thats if I get off my lazy ass and work on my fitness a bit. I might go with you guys next time. I'd bloody be in the mega vets class though.
How shagged where you after the event.

We arrived at 6:30am and after scruitineering had to line up on the second row start. I couldn't imagine how early the first row guys must have arrived at the track.

The guys in front of me were a bit slow off the mark so I was mixed up in the melee through the first turn. In the first part of the race I had a bit of fun passing people then crashed and lost all the positions then settled into a sensible pace. Still crashed 3 more times. I thought the track was excellent but really physically tough - just no places to rest.

Darryl Hurley and Cody Cooper passed me halfway through my second lap at truly impressive speed. 5 minutes later I passed Darryl's bike lying on the track with him walking away from it holding his shoulder. I didn't see any trees for him to hit unless it was a log on the ground.
I was spent 2/3 of the way through lap 2 and groveled my way to finish 13th in class (mega vets) I was more pleased to finish and not be last than anything.

The whole show was outstanding - extremely well organised and the weather turned out fantastic. However I was pissed off to hear someone tried to steal a bike (and maybe more) The organisers soon had people on bikes patrolling the carpark.

At the prizegiving after I was privelliged to share a table with the Burgess family who are big in the Tarawera 100 and I was quite chuffed for the special mention and prizes for us Mega vet riders.

Already looking forward to next years event.

I got the first 30 mins on helmet cam before 1 crash too many stopped my video camera. But I'm going to have to develop a clear plastic tear off system for my lens to deal with the muddy conditions.

Press release:

CODY COOPER CLAIMS THE 30TH ANNIVERSARY TARAWERA 100.

The 2007 Yamaha Tarawera 100 is over for another year. The annual endurance event was attended by 350 riders who, from the 'shotgun' start headed off on a 100 mile adventure through the spectacular tracks and trails of the MatahinaForest.

Part of the tradition is it's 100 miles - 167 kilometres made up of 4 x 25 mile loops. It was a spectacular event, with brilliant racing from some of New Zealand's best motocross and enduro stars.

Cody Cooper (Honda CRF450R) was first out of the forest on lap four to take the overall win by 3 minutes 26 seconds.

"The track was mint," said a delighted Cooper.

"It was wet at the start and there was a couple of muddy sections but otherwise it was great. I got passed Shayne (King) on the second lap and did not realise that I had hit him with a big rock that hurt his thumb. I battled with Daryl Hurley (Suzuki) midway into the third lap, then he disappeared."

"I had a long fuel pitstop because my fire extinguisher was loose and I was worried that if I lost it I might get penalised. So we fitted another one to the handlebars which was just as well as the other one did disappear. I was told Hurles had hit a tree and broken his collar bone so with him gone I was able to cruise the last lap" he said.

"Did you enjoy it ?" I asked.

"Yeah, I had a real good time" he said emphatically.

Damien King (Yamaha) was 2nd and Barry Morris (Yamaha) was 3rd.

Honda CRF450R riders Shayne King and Peter Broxholme were 4th and 5th respectively.

I caught up with Shayne King. "I got a good start and sat in behind Barry Morris and Cam Negus for the first lap" he said.

"At the first fuel stop I got out ten seconds in front and when Coops (Cody Cooper) got past he threw up a hail of stones and one big one got me on the thumb. It pushed the nail back and the bone into the joint and was very painful. To make matters worse, because I could not grip with my thumb, I ended up with blisters."

"This is the first time I have done one and apart from the thumb would do another tomorrow" he said enthusiastically. "I just loved it, perfect berms, it was just like a big motocross track" he continued.

The Castrol Honda Red Riders Team also won the Team's Event with three top five placings. Blue Wing Honda had several riders in the other classes such as those on the CRF250 but the results have still not been posted as we go to press.

Cooper returns to Australia Friday week for Round 7 of the Australian Motocross Championships at Wonthaggi, Victoria where his No Fear Honda Team will be re-joined by a recuperated Craig Anderson.

My mate has a lake house in Rotoiti so I could go there if its not rented for the weekend. With an 8.00am log in and a 9am or so start you would have to go down the day before.
Maybe I could organise a big meet up at Rotoiti with my regular riding mates about 7 of us and you guys as well. I gather you guys went the day before?

Just getting some idea of costs as me an my boys make 3. And I still pay for the lot. Could my youngest have a go at one of there rides, or is it to much for him?

i see no reason why not, nothing about the tracks of thiers ive ridden seems particularly diffucult, just long & tiring, but youth = fitness, so should be ok.

you wouldnt want to be anywhere overnight without bikes fairly well secured, we went the night before, but next time would probably just go that day

Heres a few photos a mate got of the race, I was riding, and he was pit crew for me and my Brother. He didn't have a lot to do most of the time so got a few photos.

I thought it was a great event, organised really well and great fun. The race it self went fairly well for me, I only managed 3 laps which gutted me a bit (my brother got 4 and was only 10min in front of me).
My start was slow because the guy in front couldn't get his bike started and I had to wait for some room to go around, after that it was just avoid the pile ups and keep on 2 wheels. Didn't have any major offs so probably not trying hard enough, will be back next year with aim of getting 4 laps in!!

highspeedsteel
11th July 2007, 18:46
Here are some more photos, I have heaps but these are probably the best ones. After I got lapped out I spent some time near that mud hole just before the finish and took a few photos. Not a bad place when riders are coming through tired and not concentrating well.

Katoomer

It surprised me how many riders were getting stuck when all the bogs had good lines available like the big puddle 3/4s the way around that bikes were stuck on the sides yet it was only 6 inches deep thru the middle. It pays to look before you leap unless you have energy to burn ,I didn't and chose not to do a 4th lap as I only had to do 3 (super vet)

My favourite corner:

This thread has been closed due to FAR to much fun being had

BTW what do you reckon the best tactic would have been .. wait , or nail the start , I reckon wait and soft suspension with s12 tyres ????

Stephen

cheese
13th July 2007, 08:56
I had the S12, but my suspension was FAR FAR TOO HARD! I was getting killer sore arms after not much riding, I really need to get my forks to Greg.

Taz
13th July 2007, 13:13
Always nail the start even if you aint that good. It's the easiest way to make up plenty of places. Also less chance of having to wait for the 300 bikes in front of you to get up that easy little hill. And you may surprise yourself as you may not be as bad as you think?

Katoomer
13th July 2007, 15:42
Nailing the start is the way however you end up riding at a speed that is hard to sustain if you aren't really fit. The ideal would be some sort of grading so that slower riders wouldn't get a good start then hold up the faster ones. There seemed to be a few that had pulled over or were cruising with arm pump etc from going too hard early on . Unless you are top 30 material you need to think about the whole race. My strategy anyhow.

Brian d marge
13th July 2007, 19:08
Ive always ( tried ) to save my energy till last ,,, So I would have hung back and ridden around the pile up

Though the prob with that is by the time you get to the hill its ,, chewed up ...

NZ conditions really are unique ...

Stephen
