You forgot to mention the 3m wide crater (or was that the chasm?)...anyway, that road just wouldn't be as 'challenging' if it wasn't for it's obstacles!
I tell ya CK, after doing it about 12 times now I really do enjoy it more - why do you think Dave lives on it? :bleh:

It would probably be a good idea not to "bump into" anyone on that road - F/F's SH22 rides are already notorious enough for accidents, without you heading out specifically to cause one! :shit: ;)

That was quite a shock - being woken up by a deafening noise at eh ungodly hour of 9am  You should have asked to swap bikes sometime. Maybe next ride aye.
T'was a good ride down there... Until we stopped and had a chat. Something didnt work for me after that, I was tensing up, taking terrible lines and generally not enjoying myself. Then, coming down some hill, hit a rather large bump and tried to penetrate the tank with me balls... That saw me off to the side of the road for a while. Fair made me eyes water that did :weep: Guy on the blue R1 came back past me on his way home, and said that the rest of the group were waiting at an intersection not far up the road. So I head off, expecting to see a group of bikers, but none at the next intersection, nor the one after that :bye: What with it being my first ride in the area, no map, and no idea where I was headed, or where the next gas stop could be made, I thought I'd turn around.
Stopped at a cellphone tower to let TS know I hadnt crashed, and was heading back, and after that slight break my riding came right again. Maybe it was not pushing to catch up to what might be the group, the slightly less unfamiliar roads, or the absence of testicles in my chest, but I started to enjoy myself again. Still a long way to go before I get confident again though...

I had to get my weekly riding fix so I texted Mr D for the location of the group at 1pm and met up with them all at Huntly about 2.15pm, after having a rather boring blast down SH1 through tonnes of roadworks and Sunday 'drivers'!
Good to meet some of you for the 1st time (Death, Draco, Sam, Zapf, Vagabond). I had a good 4 hour riding fix and the secret roads from Huntly thru SH22 and through to Tuakau were awesome to ride as usual - and the weather couldn't have been much better! :sunny:
The Gixxer boys were truly a sight with their syncronised 2-300m monos - very skilled indeed!!

Great day for a ride. Glad you guys enjoyed the Highway 22 experience. I had a lunch appointment in Taupo so had to give 22 a miss this time and do the boring SH1 bit. Still a great day, marred only by the involuntary $80 contribution to the consolidated fund that was exacted just south of Cambridge...
But worth it for the sun and cloudless sky...
Lots of other bikes on the road, too.

Awesome ride guys, i had a great ride down, with a pretty fast pace.... Ride back was a bit slower due to my front tyre being knacked (got a new one just have to get it put on) Awesome to watch wheelies from Death, Sam and Zed.
But ofcourse it was a KB ride and there had to be an off :( Vagabond was riding great but on a corner he apexd too early, locked the rear brake and went off the road :( Draco sorted him out with her medical skills :niceone: and everyone pitched in to do what they could. JUST A NOTE IT WAS NOT ON SH22 lol. Vagabond had hit a concrete post pretty hard with his arse and had to be carted away to hospital. F/F was then rung, and the awesome guy came down and picked up the CB900 even though he had work, top effort Dave :niceone: maybe this waikato ride i can show you my appreceiation by buying you a few rums :niceone:
But other than the bin, it was a great day and a great ride with some great people :niceone:
Definately looking forward to the next one where i will HAVE BRAKES and a new front tyre and MR will be there on his TZR250 hehehe...... can't wait....

Well, today was a long day, but I have to say it was one of the best rides (apart from the bin) that I've ever been on. That "secret" road from Huntley to SH22 was awsome, and I felt like I was getting into the rhythm of riding the bike well.
It was really good riding with other people that I could (or almost could) keep up with, Zapf, Milky and Draco (well, almost). I think it kind of spoils the ride a bit if you're riding with people way faster than you and just get left behind all the time.
Judderbar, from my experience I don't think there is much chance of keeping up with other people on the faster bikes. My Zeal tops out at 140, and it's pushing it to get it over 120. I think the bigger bikes are able to accelerate quicker out of corners and on the straights and there's just no way to keep up.
Of course, a lot of it is rider ability and confidence as well.
Vagabond, I guess you won't be reading this for a while, but I hope you're doing ok.
Here are a few of the pics I took:

sounds like every1 had fun. I just got back from my own ride. Saw heaps of bikes out there and the odd ambulance :shit: did anyone go for a blast down tauranga way? I was coming back and there were 3 bikes (400's i think) fully tapped out and i only had time to flash the last rider to tell him there was a HP up front. And any KB'rs receive a ticket out kaukapakapa way ? :D and was that a KB'er on the ninja thrashing the berries off his bike that went past me (i was in the cage) out towards warkworth way?? speak up sinners:D

Was a mint day for a ride, and my first ride wearing leathers ($$bargain!!), sooo much more comfortable/unrestrictive than my technic gears.
After a short ride behind twosmoker to Huntly I turned back to ham's. I had been trying to teach myself to get my knee down all morning, (so that the sliders were more than just a fashion accesory!) and then I came across a big long sweeping left hander. Probably about an 80km corner.
First time around it i thought 'what a mean corner' so I went back and tried it a bit faster/leaned a bit more, and YES knee touched down a couple of times... stoked.
Time for another run... too slow, couldn't get it down, then third run, hit corner fast (for me) and slid knee right around the corner! Faarkin cool!
Big smile on face all the way back to ham's and knee down a couple more times on the way to boot. Seems I just needed to push 5 or 10 % harder/faster on corners to get it down. And a check of the chicken strips when I got home confirm new max lean record for me, chicken strips have been halved.
Bring on summer and month of living in Matarangi!! (coromandel)

Judderbar, you should really come along. Yes I hav problems keeping up, hence more 250's the better :P heheh my 250 tops out at 140km as well and avg speed around 100~120 depending on conditions, so its more like being consistent and keeping a good rythem. Erik was keeping up on his FZR in the morning, and almost keep up in the avo when I was more focused.
Sorry we lost u Milky, I didn't realise it until talked to TS.
Draco has some very fast lines and I "tries" to keep up in the 250 :P

How depressing was it, being stuck at work until 3pm with the sun shining down out of a cloudless Waikato sky?!?!?? :crybaby:
Glad to hear you lot (mostly) had a good day - don't forget to keep us posted about VB, eh?
At 3pm, the sun was still shining, so I went through my front door, jumped into my gear and was on my bike heading out of the garage approximately 20 minutes after I arrived home!
Took the long way to Tauranga via SH1B, Cambridge, the quarry road from Mobil Karapiro and then straight across SH29 & SH27, thru Okoroire & on to SH28 and the bottom of the Kaimais. Had a cracking run up the Kaimais, doing 140-ish kph through the bottom few corners & 100kph through the tighter stuff - a good 10-15kph faster than normal. I was well into the groove of practicing shifting round on the bike & sticking my knee out (but not too far, since I haven't got any sliders attached to the velcro!) and it was a shame to take it slow-ish the rest of the way, since there's normally loads of HP's along there (but not yesterday).
Had a rather sedate ride home about lunchtime today - just nice to be out on the bike again. :D

Yes his back was protected, but I think the impact of his landing was where his backside came to an abrupt stop against a concrete post along a fenceline. I was the bike behind him when he binned it...moving stuff!

Damn sorry to hear about VB's bin. Prime reason to ALWAYS wear a back protector though. With the injury he's got, imagine how much worse it could have been without on.
Tis unfortunate that we make these realizations more often than not at the expense of some misfortune.
Speedy recovery VB, ask them for a computer. If being stuck in a hospital isn't bad enough just think of the gazillion unread posts you going to have to trawl through when you back.
BTW - for the less medicially knowledgable of us could someone (Draco?) explain the injury? is the t12 down by the tail bone?

Google is your friend:
http://sprojects.mmi.mcgill.ca/postabdwall/Bones-Thoracic.htm
There's the t12 vertebra, I think the T stands for thoracic (rib cage area).
I don't know how serious that kinda injury is or how long it takes to heal or anything though, and searching for that's a bit more complicated than looking for a picture.

Yep, T stands for thoracic (meaning chest basically) T12 is the last thoracic vertebrae. To give you an idea, T10 is at the level of you umbilicus (belly button) so it's a couple of inches or so lower than that. As death pointed out in MR's thread, he hit under his backside so a back protector wasn't much use, having said that, it could have been worse without that support.
I will be going up to the hospital to see VB on friday and see how his surgery went (he chipped a piece of bone off and they're taking it out). He sounds hopeful that he will be out fairly quickly once the surgery is done.
I think the most helpful thing VB (and those helping) did was for him to lie really still. So if your unlucky to bin guys, and your hurt, remember that!
I will pass on all your good wishes to him.
Cheers, Draco.

Jeeze, reading that makes it sound like he's damn lucky it's not any worse.
I hope the surgery goes well and he gets out soon!
