View Full Version : New Tenere rumour

CBobR
9th July 2007, 14:59
So many great adventure bikes rumoured, new transalp, KTM 690 Rally, and now a new Yamaha Tenere.
XT660 with big tank and screen, I'd have one (if it's a lot cheaper than the 690...).

Babelfish translation:
To the Hall of Milan, as it announces Motorcycling of July, it will come introduced the new Yamaha Ténéré. These the caratterisitche main: motor 660 to injection of the MT-03, perhaps increased in power and the maximum brace, new chassis in steel, suspensions adapted to enduro and the wheels from 21-17. For the rest, forcellone in light alloy, it completes instrumentation that could inglobare a GPS and a double dakariane front beacon that resumes that one of the motion, while the posterior beacon has one double row of led.

That is a seriously dodgy looking photochop/crayon effort, pipes under the engine on a dirtbike are never going to be paid for with my money. It does look better than the XT660X tho.

Bit more of a fuel tank would be nice.

Must admit I do like the looks; it reminds me of some cartoon drawings of dirt bikes that I liked... from about 15 years ago... but they were schweet! Also it's short wheelbase/tall height is reminiscent of the Rallye bikes.

Agree with Clint and Fran. Instead will have to point out the twin front discs and low front guard, both are bug-bears on the 640 Adventure.

But will be great to have another bike in the class.

while I love the look (except maybe the fairing - screams ktm wannabe) - do you notice that they have removed the partial lower front guard. How long before the radiator eats a rock or just clogs completely (I've done the latter even with the lower guard in place). The front guards on these things are all about styling and have very little to do with keeping shit off you or the bike

Sat on a mates 640, other than the fact I could only tippy toe on it, it had the high mud guard, I understand they changed to the lower one? Why? Road bias?

They use low guards in events like the Dakar 'cos there aint much mud in the desert. They fit those same guards to adv bikes so you can have that cool Dakar look.
They are also better for high speed stability, hence the fitment to 200+ km/h capable machines like the KTM 950, the newer 640's have the same front forks, wheel, brake setup as the 950 and got the low guard with it.

Decent tail rack, high pipes, ability to strap panniers on, high front guard and 18l+ fuel tank could get me interested. Sounds like a KTM Adv but the Tenere would hopefully be cheaper, need less maintenance have frugalish fuel injection.

Singles and Cruisers seem to be "in" in Europe recently, finally catching up with Sportsbikes in popularity,so many speed cameras and un-marked camera cars around these days speeding's going to get you caught sometime if you persist.
"New Tenere" might well be a goer on that basis, old version was a big hit in mainland Europe,as all the old trailies were.XTX is big but also got a reputation for shoddy finish, engine paint can flake off and bubble pretty quickly and I've seen some truly disgraceful rust on spokesmy 11 year-old DR has none at all, both enough to put me off of buying one which is a shame.I'm pretty sure the XTX's are made in France so you'd think they'd make them to survive European weather, bikes from Honda's Spanish factory have a similar bad rep for finish, odd thing is though that my old SLR650 always cleaned up like new with very little effort.
If the "New Tenere" does materialise it'll no more be a serious adventure trailie than the XTX is a proper trail-bike but hard though it may be for Kiwis to imagine most of these things are bought because they're good in town,it's illegal to ride a bike off-road just about everywhere in Britain for example unless you can find a friendly land-owner who'll let you use his private land. Also just about every road everywhere,no matter how narrow or isolated,is metalled here.Bit ironic really but trail bikes are quickly becoming the most sensible choice for urban riding due to their filtering ability and the crap state of the roads, that long-travel suspension being more used to pot-holes in neglected roads than for any off-road abilities. If the "New Tenere" does materialise it'll be as an answer to the F650 rather than the KLR or DR.

You got that right - weight and suspension travel are about the same. Seat is also very similar. If only somebody would bring out something more like the KTM 640 Adv i.e. good suspension with more trail style seat i.e. can move weight around like on a DR650. Hmmm - time for a DR650 RSE update????

Gotta agree with ya. 1980s XT 600 Tenere were doing the business, when BMW were wobbling around on air heads. (excluding factory racers).
Mass production wise, Yamaha were the Biz.

As far as I know, its new for the XT series. Makes sense if they are trying to slim down the seat/tank area for better rider control, while still supplying a decent fuel range.

(If it will be as shown in the pic) front brakes are interesting, a lot of pistons there. Any guesses if that's a 21 inch front wheel? We'll know after the weekend I suppose.
Hopefully it's lightish. Could be a tough call. Anyone getting impatient about the 690 adventure? ..or pondering how much weight you could save by ditching the big cans on the Tenere?

I'd put a beer on that Transalp being heavier than the old one. KTM & BMW seem to be the only manufacturers interested in making their adv bikes lighter, everybody else is going the other way.

First hotel with free net in last night (finally). I recon the Tenere is going to go down a treat in Itally. Only just got to Switzerland so dont know about further north. Going to do a write up when I get to Sweden but Transalps, Africa Twins, F650 GS, TT/XT/Tenere(old), R GS BMWs and a smattering of old XL honda's made up well over 50% of all motorbikes (there is a total and utter dominance of scooters though) I saw around the cities of Italy. The only newer models were the TA's and the BMWs so I'm guessing there is space for a new Tenere.

The roads are so damn rough (especially the cobbled bits) that you'd be mad to ride a sports bike (though some do).

Only one thing wrong - no dirt/dust on any of them.
