i agree. infact thats the answers i gave to both similar questions in my test and got correct.
but surely with a bike like a cbr250rr, one would assume you already obtain a licence??

based on this http://www.landtransport.govt.nz/road-user-safety/motorcyclists/riding-techniques.html#braking
the correct answer is c, a. Both, front.

Big Dog
9th July 2007, 21:24
More specifically

Braking

* Your brakes are the most important part on your motorcycle. Always check them before you ride.
* Your most effective brake is your front brake, but the most effective way to bring your motorcycle to a stop is to use the front and rear brakes together. Use both brakes every time you slow down or stop.
* Overbraking one or both wheels is one of the most common causes of skidding.

No, based on that, the answer is still front.

"Your most effective brake is your front brake"

If the question was which brake(s) would you use to stop the most effectively...

Its not a trick question. Do not read anything into it.
The answer is front for both. It is the most powerful and most effective BRAKE.

As Big Dog hinted towards, BOTH brakes stop the bike most effectively.

Make sure you read the questions carefully and you'll be fine.

Stickchick
9th July 2007, 21:41
The answer to both the questions is the front...they have just worded them different to catch you off guard. Good luck tomorrow, just take your time and read the questions thoroughly and you will be fine.

90% front 10% rear. Most effective braking is both together with about the same ratio.

Actually my opinion is based on there is no way of knowing which is the more powerful brake without knowing the bike you are riding and its state of mechanical readiness.
The most powerful way to reduce speed is to apply both, and the most effective.
"Which brake is the MOST POWERFUL on a motorcycle?????"
Not really a valid question but any time there is a choice of both that is the most powerful and effective.

For a start power is nothing without control. This is why scooters wear less powerful brakes that motogp bikes. too much power makes them less effective, but I digress.
Either way don't stress about it.
It is just one question. Scarily enough they let you get 5 wrong.
If Devil is right you can answer the way they want, if I am right you can answer correctly.

in regards to your test tomorrow, don't sweat it, you'll be fine. Take a deep breath before each question, take your time and make sure you understand the context of the question.

I will not back away from the truth, in light of popular opinion I concede it is possible that the LTSA have dispensed with the truth in an effort to lower the number of people who score 100% in the tests.

well thank you all for your opinion, i value all of it even putting both feet down on the ground haha,

however i'm a statistical guy and stats would tell me the correct answer is front and front to the two questions. my poll is show way of front being the correct answer (even tho i've had minimal votes so far).

But wish me luck, and like you said i can get 5 questions wrong so i have abit of give with the whole thing

Big Dog is not misleading with his advice. He speaketh the truth, and the parts he has highlighted are more important than LTNZ's stupid questions.

However, if you want to get the question right, answer as i've said, get your licence. Then you can learn the best way to do it, because LTNZ are not going to show you this.

This one question could be the difference between getting it and not...

The question is badly worded, anyway it always depends upon the situation and what braking combination is required or best suited for the conditions.

Individually, the front brake is the most effective in most cases on a motorcycle! (IMHO) Or at least the one I use the most.

I think I will fill your poll in with the front, I think that is what you are looking for!

You can (carefully) ride a bike without brakes but it much less fun without an engine, go figure! John.

Five wrong? I thought it was three. Anyway, a tip I found useful is to do all the ones you are sure of first, then go back and tackle the 'tricky' ones. That way you will already know if you need to stress or if it doesnt matter how you answer because you will already (hopefully) have enough right.

One that I got wrong when sitting the scratchy for my motorcycle learners was 'what is the maximum distance allowed between a vehicle and the vehicle it is towing'.....!

Stickchick
10th July 2007, 10:06
People have different opinions about the brakin issues but you have to realise that the road code has only one answer. What is written in there and what is actually practised are two different things...so I found out

Toaster
10th July 2007, 11:08
The thing that concerns me..... if you have ever ridden a bike, you will clearly know the answer unless you brake incorrectly.

Front is the most powerful and effective. Just look at the caliper for a start. Always brake front first then ease on the rear. Avoids lockups on the rear and gets the weight forward.

I recall a fatal a while back where a newbie only used his rear brake in an emergency stop. He subsequently slid into a truck and killed himself.... nice long skid mark from the rear tyre along the road. Riding too fast for that particular road and corner as well as his inexperence in emergency braking cost him dearly.

Stickchick

Ok so how did you go?

ManDownUnder
10th July 2007, 12:07
I could be a real bastard here and ask about the most powerful brake... how do you know it's the front...

What if the front is a drum brake (or a bicycle caliper brake) and the rear has twin 350mm disks brakes on it? Technically it would be the rear brake (in this strange beast) that is the most powerful.

Otherwsie front front (if the "which" refers to which brake), otherwise c, c if referring to which option. Well done to the moron designing that question. It's bad enough with English as a first language...

mazz1972
10th July 2007, 15:55
I'm sure you've already sat and passed your test today with flying colours and will know if your answers were correct....

For anyone else reading this thread, you can test yourself online with the licence test questions here

http://www.drivinginstructor.co.nz/index.php?goto_page=courses/test_menu.php

The only questions not included on there are the diagram give way ones - you need the printed roadcode book for that. It's a good website as you can select your answers and get them checked by the site so you know if you are right or wrong.

10th July 2007, 16:30
If you ride a Blackbird, or a newer Viffer - you'd may struggle to answer this one! Dual Combined Braking systems etc.

But definitely A.

If you answered B - go buy a push bike.

Damn I can't believe you babyblade250rr... You're not serious are you???????? You're only just doing your learners today?????????? No wonder you didn't want to go for a ride with me just yet!!! hahahahaha !!!!!!!

What the hell did you tell Red Baron when they asked to see your license?? I assume that means you didn't get to test ride before you bought.... You're so lucky you didn't get a lemon, then again you did have carburettor troubles. Oh well, live and learn my friend.

P.S. Learner test is easy, Use your head (Prolly too late for this now I assume you've already been). Most powerful brake = front. Which brake to use when stopping = both. You can carry a pillion = full license. Max speed = 70kph. Quickest stops = Progressive braking in a straight line. Stopping in the wet/over oil/diesel = Start braking sooner than usual. Best bikes on for the road = Road bikes. etc, etc, etc. Every question has 1 good answer and 3 dumb answers.

Congratulations babyblade250rr.

Hey, I see from your profile that I am 41yrs older than you and have had my bike licence for 52yrs!

Boy oh boy, how things have changed over that time!

It was a lot easier for us to get our licences but conditions on the roads and the quality of the bikes were crap by comparison and safety gear was practically nonexistent.

On a long ride you spent hours and hours without even seeing another biker, I guess that's where the excitement and waving thing gets built in to you.

I will have to resit my licences again before too much longer so I had better get swatting up on the road code or I might be walking before I really want to!

I am not actually looking forward to having to re apply/ re test, for my licences and will probably be a lot more apprehensive than you were.

Enjoy your bike, they sure are a lot better than first class walking! Cheers John.

I would say it depends on the machine, but front, front is not bad advice.

Some rear brakes might be more pwerfule but not more effective and vice` versa.

Shit; never had that put before me, good post.

Strongest brake is Finn's Dodge Ram when he does an emergency stop inches in front of you.
