Hey people,
Thought I'd drop a line and let you all know about my latest news.
Got engaged to my wonderful parter on the weekend. Hit the 2 year mark a few months back & decided we've been beating around the bush for long enough.
Party on people!

I've meet you Ant, so I hope that gives me the right to ask,
Isn't 18 too young??!
Ild like to just say good luck, but getting married is so much more than just hopeing for "good luck".
Not what you want to hear I know. But because I was in a similar position to you,, I'ld be doing you a dis-services not to asked the question.

ooOOOoo watch out for that one...
We got married for $4,500 (all up!) and it was agreat day - nothing missing and you could use the rest for that bike (or a house or a nest egg or... you get the idea).
Congrats on the big step.

Congrats dude. This will be a stressful time. As soon as people hear you say wedding they get out their special pricelist. We’re currently in the process & man some crowds are trying to rip ya blind.
You have to balance 'you only do it once' vs 'this money if you have to borrow it will set you back until it is paid off'. Many people are doing drinks & nibbles & no sit down meals for this reason. Drinks & nibbles & hit the town or just have a party may be the cheap option. Depends on the parents & if they feel like sponsoring it.
Here’s my idea I’d like to use (but may be slipping through my hands). If you get a venue where you have to bring everything, pre-order a bunch of Thai food. Funky & different & people will think you are being flash when infact it’s cheap as chips (well almost fish & chips, which I’ve also heard done).
Also don’t let anyone tell you what you should do it like. Oh, . . like above, um, . . . damn! :argh:

Look... I KNOW some people need the princess thing but trust me (erm, hang on, that may not be such a good idea).. Anyway. Do what ya gotta do, but if people are just comin' to eat n drink for free for the price of a naf toaster you don't need em!
There is only one thing thats important. When you look each other in the eye and make your vows. You better mean it! It's a solem promise. If you are not sure, wait, live together, what ever! Just be sure you mean it when you say it. It's not a day for bullshit!
Go for it! I wanna see the pictures though!
Cheers

What it *is*, or should be, is something to get over and done with as cheaply as possible, so you can get on with the business of being married.
The whole 'expensive wedding' requirement annoys the snot out of me. It's such a barrier. So many people don't get married simply because of all the hoo-hah involved with having a Wedding.
For what it's worth, I did the usual deal myself, of course, and I didn't think I got anything out of it, really. Blah, blah, pay to feed a hundred people, get about 30% of the value back in gifts, who cares?
It's just a big con.

I agree actually.
At my wedding, I had the people I wanted, the priest and place that I wanted, the dress I wanted, but most of all, I had the man I wanted.
I actually wanted to elope, but he went all soppy and couldn't get married without his mummy knowing and being there. Since there were 2 of us in the marriage, I let him have his small ceremony. Cost us less than a grand I think. That included _everything_. Fantastic day from what I remember. :drinknsin
But I suppose, its how _you_ want your wedding, innit. Is it about feeding the masses and having your extended family and kinda-friends around you on the day you say, 'It's only this person from now on'. Or do you want to have just the very special day-to-day people see it, then have a kick-ass honeymoon?
Whatever, it's really only the 2 people involved choice, innit.
Amazingly last night Carmen Electra's husband-to-be said something along those same lines and coherently too. Now there's a tool if every I saw one :tugger: , thank God I don't have to wake up to him every morning.

Awww, ain't that sweet. Always nice to be reminded that there *are* sensitive, quiet, nice, polite, mother-loving guys out there. It must have taken you a while to find him. Does he like bikes, too? Perhaps you should tell him about the forum. It gets quiet in here, sometimes.

That sounds perfect. A grand? My cuppa tea, all right.

It usually gets unpleasant when it *stops* being their choice. Often because one of them has pushy, unpleasant family members who see this as their one chance to get what they managed to 'miss out on' at some point in the past. Shudder.

 That's great Ants. After 28 years of wedded bliss I think I can speak from experience! Started young, and still feel young...most of the time, but especially when riding! (Both kinds). It takes a lot of patience, and the ability to say "sorry, I'm a pratt".
All the best mate!

He does, he is and he's usually the one making all the noise from what I've seen ;)
You know, I'm supprised you haven't figured out who he is ... [singing] 'cos I'm not gonna tell you'.
Maybe we should do a poll. That would be funny. How do you start one of them suckers up. Anyone who knows who I am could start it up for me.
Who is Handbrake's man? ... Mind you in reality, I don't think anyone would want to own up to it ;)

The fun you can have when you're in a long term rollarcoaster relationship.
You can feel safe and free with the verbal diarohea to each other...
where oral sex turns into standing across the room from each other yelling 'F**K YOU!" ....
just kidding :msn-wink:
In the long run, marriage is only just a piece of paper these days. But for some reason, it can also feel like a security blanket for your relationship.

Thanks guys and gals, you're all awesome people.
Well the cost is going to be around the $8k mark (don't ask, but like $4k on catering alone for 200+ people), but it's all good once this new job kicks in.
Think we'll go down south to Hamner Springs and maybe carry on to Chch for the honeymoon.
Thanks again, will post updates later on.
