Is there anywhere other than trademe to look for old vans, load of crap on there.

Do Telecom, or any of the courier companys sell them off cheap etc?

Anyone on here got a cheap one to sell?

Also was wondering what the fuel cost of a 2.0l petrol against a diesel would be, any owners know?

About the same if you service your diesel the ammount of times that is recommened.
Expecially turbo diesels, if you dont service them heaps....bang.
Thats been my experience with them, good motors - but lots of servicing.

Diesel has cheaper fuel costs, lower consumption
but costs more to licence, you pay RUCs and have more frequent oil changes.
Folk are frightened off by old jap import diesels, so the purchase price can be attractive.

When I looked about a year ago an average condition NZ new 2.8 man diesel hiace with 200,000km to 250,000km would sell for about $2000

Consumption is about 9l/100km diesel
For 10,000km/year

Rego $302.50
Oil+filter (2) $100
900l diesel @$1.04/l = 936
RUC $32.79 per 1000km = 327.90

Diesel Total $1666.40

10,000km 2l petrol, I'll guess consumption at 11.5l/100km
Rego $183.22
Oil/filter (1) $50
1150l of Petrol @ 1.56 = 1794
Petrol Total $2027.22

The diesel costs should include 0.5 of a fuel filter and 1/3 of an air filter also.
Modern diesels have much longer service intervals. The current peugeot hdi diesels have a 20,000km service interval but I bet the consumables are really expensive.

Yeh my VW TDi said it had 20,000km service interval, but apparently that was not an international thing as all the mechanics reckon that due to the sulfur in the diesel in NZ that all engines running on it should at least get the filters checked every 10,000k's minimum.

New Zealand's not low sulphur diesel was the worst in the developed world. Even Nigeria outclassed it, that's what you get with a monopoly.... oh sorry they aren't a monopoly they are just in the Govt. pocket..

That seems fairly close to my experiences. I had a 86 Hiace 2L petrol for 2 years and then a few months ago upgraded to a Hyundai (don't laugh!) H100 2.7 diesel (has the same motor as mitsi L300 with different head).

The Hiace consistently finished around 11.5 to 12L/100kms. Being a bit old and heavy penalised it a bit. Had only done 170000kms when I bought it and I virtually didn't spend a cent on it (apart from maintenance). Got rid of it cause rust was starting to become a problem. Struggled a bit up some of the hills but could cruise on the flat at 110 with 2 bikes in the back.

The Hyundai is a totally new kettle of fish and I'm actually very impressed by it. Way more powerful than the old one and uses just over 10L/100km. Better range, cheaper to run and gets up hills slightly faster. Yeah its not in the same league as a Hiace but I'm happy with it and I got it for very cheap. Talking to mechanics etc they didn't have anything bad to say about it. Just keep the service intervals up and you'll be fine.

Telecom don't have their own vans - it's all contracted to Transfield, you might want to get in touch with them

are there any vans that you can't get dirt bikes in?

I looked at a Ford Econovan SWB today, and it didn't look like there is much height at the back door for loading the bike.

Any know?
