Am looking at purchasing a KLX300 . The option now is whether to buy new or 2nd hand.(2-3 years old).. I know most people will say buy new and that may well be the end result but I just want to consider the potential costs either way..

If I go for the used option and things go pear shaped with engine can anyone online give some idea as to what the costs are like to recondition the top end of these bikes..???. Just a ball park figure - nothing too exact .

I have been told the bottom ends are pretty rock solid so I would hope that it would not let go...

Any other potential cost pitfalls to be aware of....?????

Thanks in advance.

$800 tops for the top end.

great bike...i've had my 07 model for about 6months now and i love it! i will grow out of it eventually, it is only stock currently but once my riding ability improves i think i'll go for the klx450r but only for the electric leg and digital readout etc.

Dads bike (2003) he's never had to open the engine at all, always on top of his oil changes and air filler cleaned after every ride.
Only thing that went on the bike was the streering head bearings

we have some of them running as farm bikes, ie used every day, very rare to do anything, 1st thing that needs replacing is the timing chain, should be about $300 all up,

if it is very early you may want to check the kick start idler gear for sideways movement,

I've used them as farm bikes [dairy+dry stock]for a good number of years..in all heat extremes...I can't say I ever maintained my very well...infact I treated them like shit...thrashed them like crap...they handled it with ease...
never missed a beat...never used oil...only complaint was the amount of fork seals I went through!! I'ld buy one 2nd hand or new without a thought!!
