This is a troll right?

The road south from there is rated as one of the very best rides in the world.
I'd rate it one of the best in this country. Look at the threads mentioning "West Coast Highway" or similar

One of New Zealand's best French restaurants can be found in Hokitika. The gateway to south Westland. Fantastic!

Hokitika is the best town in the country

The streets a wide enough to do a U-turn in a bullock cart

There was at one time 118 pubs

And I grew up there

What more do you need?

there are some rural dead straight unpoliced roads a bit inland long enough to stretch the legs of most bikes.

Well, um, NO. But I will generally have an idea if I'm asking about a place. However you are obviously looking for a type of place on a biking route, so, tell us what you are looking for and maybe we can help. Many of us have travelled the whole country at some stage.

And when you do decide to come down south there will be plenty of KBers happy to join up and ride parts of the country with you.

i was asking coz i saw something for sale there and i wasnt having much luck with maps on the net! and the place obviously is not very big or famous otherwise i might have heard of it!

im looking for a cafe/bar to buy, yes on a biking route, and i dont really want to have it on the south island! however, i will see you down there sometime, when i dont knpw yet but i will get there!

So why aren't you still there? Possibly because it makes Pontefract look like New York....

Yes it is and I got my favourite T-shirt there.

It's getting a bit buggered now (the T-shirt, not Hokitika, well, actually both) so I'm going back for another.

Next year I've got to have a go at that frozen T-shirt contest. It looks like a great way to cool down.

Just have to make sure all KBers are looking the other way.

What is the real challenge?
Finding something in Hokitika that's so hot it requires you to cool down?

Why not? Hokitika would be a great place to own a cafe/bar I would have thought, don't underestimate Westport either, they are both really nice towns.

I think you had best have a look at the South Island (all over) before you finally decide canarlee but of course there are nice places everywhere in New Zealand, it just depends on what "you" like!

If you do a nation wide tour, who is going to look after your beautiful bird! :shit: Cheers John.

Can't wait to ride some of those fantastic station roads, and saddle tracks. Hopefully near the end of summer 08.
The little Alto waterblaster, with the ossi...oscilat.....spinny head thingy is the Ducks Guts. Then all I have to do is polish an acre of chrome.

You'' have to drop by after we get set up in the Nelson region, we're hoping to be there in time for the start of the next school year.

Does my head in though - the sun comes up over the mountains instead from over the sea..

I guess that's what happens when you live on the East coast and then ride over to the West coast.

But great rally on a great site with great entertainment, only 740km from home and a totally different world and scenery. (watch the dragonflies though - big as buzzards they are and fair whack into you leg when you hit one.

Hokitika's great! :niceone:
When we lived in Chch, we had a wee TikiTour of the Southern Isle and spent the night there. There's heaps of stuff to do: we went to the aquarium (where you can catch a salmon!) and watched the eels being fed (apparently more dangerous than the sharks at Kelly Tarltons!); went to the glassblowers; there's a kewl wood-turning place there, where we bought a VERY nice turned kauri bowl; there's a place that makes jewellery, and (surprisingly) the museum there was really fascinating, especially the AV display comprising old photos and a narration taken from old diaries and letters.

17th July 2007, 14:27
ok, the reason i asked about hokitiki (well ross actually) is this, there is a cafe for sale there and it might look interesting!

my question is, would it be an ideal investment? would you use it? would it be busy enough to make a reasonable living from it?

from what i can see it (without actually going there) it looks like it has lots of off street parking, and is allready established.

if anyone would like to help me out by taking a look, or letting me know what they think if you allready know the place then please could you pm me.

ta muchly

Ross is on a major tourist route, and every vehicle that goes to or from the Glaciers, or vehicles traversing the West Coast, have to drive past. Back packers, campervans, the whole nine yards. A couple of right-angle turns make it hard to miss and it is a town with some charm, a colourful history, and a big mine at the back door that's owned by a guy who owns (and drives) a Centurian tank (in working order) and who is also a part-owner of the Good Bastards Brewery.

canarlee
17th July 2007, 15:19
but is it an all year round destination?

its all very well having what you mentioned above but if they are only passing in the summer months.........

17th July 2007, 15:34
I think it is fairly busy during the winter, heaps of traffic on that road mate.

My only worry would be that it's fairly close to hoki and a lot of people won't want another break so soon after their last stop.

Would be fairly popular with people heading north tho and the local's would be a fair bit of trade as well I would think.

canarlee
17th July 2007, 15:38
it maybe fairly close to hoki (i wouldnt know), you say that people might not want to stop and have another break? well why wont they carry on a bit further and use ross, once they know about the place?

just musing........at the moment

I can't think of anything worse than having you in the South Island, best look for a nice warm place up north

Jantar
17th July 2007, 15:45
Ross is hardly a destination in its own right, but it is a popular rest stop for through traffic. When touring with Stromfrau, we always stop in Ross. When riding solo I almost never stop there.

It is an ideal rest stop for travellers heading north, but south bound ones who have already stopped in Hokitika will probably pass straight through. Those who didn't stop in Hoki will often stop in Ross.

There may be slightly less tourist activity in winter, but as Queenstown/Wanaka are popular winter destinations, and Ross is on one of two routes to get there, there is still a lot of winter traffic.

would you if you knew of a very biker friendly pub there with possible accomodation?

would anyone else? or would you stop in tokititi anyway, as per "normal"?

I might decide to continue on to Ross, if I knew I could get a feed of whitebait as good as I can get in Hoki.

Otherwise, Hokitika to home is a pleasant 6 hour ride on one of the best biking roads in the country.

I reckon a great bike friendly pub becomes a bit of a destination in itself. Especially if you started to collect biking memorabilia. I love looking at that sort of stuff.

If you could handle small town life, which is my idea of a good time but not everyones I'd admit, then a pub/cafe/hotel in somewhere like Ross would be the duck's guts.

Gwarn!! Give it a go!!! Plus your nameless birdie could become a pub attraction.

15% off the tariff for KBers?

A couple of summers ago we rode so slowly down the West Coast (enjoying the scenery and taking s'loads of pics) we decided to extend the trip by over-nighting in Ross. Never regretted a minute, neat wee place. We ate at the Empire (I think that's the name), great food, reas' price etc. My other half spotted a B&B on the right as you come into town, Mill Cottage or something. We thought it would be an annex to their house but it's the whole house next door! Forty bucks a head, brekkie in the fridge, wicked value I reckon. Parked the bikes out the back, out of sight. We've told friends who've ridden the route and they stayed there too, happy-as.

We'll go back when we're based south of Cook Strait.
