which brand of motorcycle do you prefer?

StoneChucker
23rd September 2004, 23:28
I'd have to say Yamaha, I really like my bike. Not that it's perfect, but every relationship is about compromise, or so they say :kick:

However, my first bike, a Honda, was a great bike, and the word is they are comfortable and easy to ride.

AND, honestly, who wouldn't like to own a nice Aprillia or Ducati? I guess in practical terms the Yammy is my fav, but oneday when I'm rich or marry a rich woman (open to offers), I'll get a shiny Duc 999R to sit next to the Aprillia RSVR Factory and Honda CBR1000RR.

Dave.

Oh wait, what about a nice cruiser? I STILL want to test ride a harley, oh nevermind, I could go on ForBeepingEver

This is one of those classic can of worms questions!

Think you could have done with a "Whatever I'm riding at the moment" option as well! Or a "Do you like twins, fours or triples", or "Two or Four strokes"?

Last 10 years or so, I've owned 7 bikes:

1 Honda
2 Kawasakis
3 Suzukis
1 Yamaha

Of those, there was a single, four twins and two fours. But all four-strokes rather than two-strokes.

In that time my wife (she has been riding for 5 years - with a break in the middle) has owned a Suzuki and a Yamaha. One was a single, one a twin, one was a four-stroke and one two-stroke.

So hard to say "I have a favourite" - I've enjoyed each bike - and my wife's bikes as well.

So if YOU can come up with an answer from that lot, you're doing better than me!

No ''other'' in the poll,so poor you,I'll just have to spell it out.

I don't really care these days, they are all faceless perfection motorcycles, paint any name on the tank and I'd believe it.Back when I was young and enthusiastic I was a BSA man,the singles mainly, collected them like a girls selects shoes - oooh,I haven't got one of those,I need one of those.I had a bedroom completly full of BSA parts, you couldn't open the door fully,BSA fans had my place on the ''must do in Auckland'' list...make an appointment first please. When I got a Norton I thought they were pretty damn good too - um,started another parts collection.

Make mine a BSA...mega,just awesome on the mega...

I don't have a preference, but it's strange that every time I've been looking for a bike, I've tried a few out, and ended up buying a Honda (six so far).

First bike: Was totally open-minded, then a girl who worked with my Dad was selling her Honda because her leg was ferked. It was a god buy, so I bought it.
Second bike: Was looking for a trailie, couldn't find a suitable one, so I advertised, and a Honda turned up.
Third bike: Having been bikeless for a few years, I was desperate for a bike, but had no money. I 'inherited' a Honda from my brother-in-law, who was given it by a hitchhiker.
Fourth bike: I inherited some money this time. Went looking, saw a nice Ducati 750SS I liked, missed out on it coz I dithered around too much.:crybaby: Saw a very nice RD350LC, but wasn't sure. Saw the VF500 in a shop and lurved it, so bought it.
Fifth bike: Tested a Daytona 750, a Bandit 1200, a VT750 (had a mate who was into cruisers, so checked it out), a FireStorm, and a VFR750. The VFR750 'clicked' with me right away, so I test-rode it again, and bought it.
Sixth bike: Test rode an RF900, a VFR800, an SV650S, looked at a GSX750 and a few other bikes, and bought the FahrtSturm on TradeMe. (I really wanted the VFR800, but it was a bit over-priced, and my wife said it looked too boring).
Next bike: No idea. It'll probably be something better for touring. But if money was no object, I'd buy a 'crosser, an ST1300 or some other tourer, some super-retard or whatever for KombatKommuterKaos, and something Italian to satisfy my lusts/artistic side.

Oh yeah - and it's a stupid poll, because many of us would tick more than one make (even me, who looks like - but isn't - a confirmed Honda fan).

3 yamahas

Reliability, good performance and value for money ive had with them.

I think I'd go with Suzuki. A bit poor on some finishing, but great motors. :devil2:

I've only owned 12 bikes so far, all Japanese (except a Vespa 150 Super sport - oh yes!!). Personally I've never had any problems motorwise with any of my Suzukis or Yammies. The Hondas I've owned have always been nicely finished but seem strangely agricultural in the gearbox (a strength on the Suzukis).

Taking up riding in the mid 70's was great. Got to ride almost all types/configurations of bikes.

Two and four strokes, singles, twins, triples, fours, V twins, dirt and road. They were all great fun, but I wouldn't rate any of them as great bikes.

which brand of motorcycle do you prefer?Well Steve, good effort on the poll regardless of the negative comments so far from certain members. There seems to be a higher standard required on KB nowadays? At least you're making a worthwhile contribution! :niceone:

I've owned the following bikes in order:

Honda MB100
Suzuki GSXR250
Suzuki GSXR750WM
Honda CBR900RR
Honda CBR600F
Kawasaki ZX-6R
Honda CBR600F
So historically I am a Honda man! But if you asked me what I would buy next I would list the following models, not necessarily in order of preference:

Honda CBR600/1000
Suzuki GSXR600/1000
Yamaha R6/R1
Kawasaki 636/ZX-10
See, I'm quite easy to please really! :Punk:

I voted for BMW, but I really have no idea.
Norton, Triumph, Ducati and Buell have some bloody good looking bikes,
The jappers are reliable
Beemers have great parts support, if somewhat expensive.
Laverdas kinda look and sound nice

I'm not a Harley/cruiser kinda person, Cagivas are all ugly, and I dunno about aprilias - they seem to be race machines, and thats not me either. I'll have to claim complete ignorance about Guzzis, except that Paul's one is ugly :bleh:.
Bimotas/Gileras/Voxans... What???

So can I vote for all of the former, and for some of the models in each only?

I started on a mini bike when I was about 3 years old. My grandfather was the senior engineer at the Port Kembla steel works in NSW and he fabricated me a chain saw powered contraption. I used to zoom around the back yard, the golf course and the sailing club car park every chance I could.

Numerous close calls with the police, riding a succession of 90, 125 and 250 off road machines to and from my folks place ensued over the next 15 years. I'm quite lucky that my record only shows one 'unlicensed rider' from all those years ago. Twice I'd broken down and was pushing a bike up Boronia street past a cruising patrol car.

The day I was old enough to obtain a learners permit I also procured a CB450 Honda for $350 and rode it to school the next day.

A SR500 Yamaha was the first new bike I bought and it was traded on my first seriously powerful bike - a fully worked XS1100 which i rode around on till i was 21.

At the time I was 'off to the wild west' and in search or my fortune in the Kimberley mines so I sold the Yam and bought my first Triumph on arrival in the west.
A 1976 Bonneville T140. I liked my other bikes, but i loved that Bonnes guts, unreliable, leaky and a thing of beauty. I met some of the coolest people on that bike.

When the time came to head back east (the Kimberleys was too hard) I traded it on another XS11 - RH and converted it for a big tour. We covered most of the continent on it, 2 up.

Sold it when we had toddlers and then mucked around on a succession of old jap shitters when we were in the mortgage belt. GS650 (I'm not proud) and a GS850G amongst the mix.

About the time I went into business for myself, the old girl bought me/us a 1995 Thunderbird as my company vehicle. And i've done 120,000km on it since.

With better times and a move to NZ I added a 2nd bike for the first time ever with a '98 Trophy 1200.

There's a fair bit of 'glory days' in the attraction of the British marque for me, but i also appreciate their versatility. You can take them anywhere.

I can keep up with the sports bike crowd - (both my bikes are Ohlins equipped, have Gold valve cartridge emulators and ohlins or race tech springs and have been 'breathed on' - the trophy runs out 140hp on amps dyno with it's hi comp pistons, daytona cams, netpunes, dynojets etc etc etc.) - I dont get chromed away when with my H-D riding buddies either cause they look pretty sharp too, - Triumphs 'fit in' anywhere. Clubhouse or track day. Cool bikes.

The accessories, jackets, and supplementary kit is also good and the RAT thing has been pretty good too. We've had some sik rides.

I got nuffink against Jap bikes or riders (I don't like metric cruisers, but that's a taste thing) but I'll stick with the brits. I'd like a Tiger next for some of those killer dirt roads.

I love lots of different bikes so I don't think I can narrow it down to one! I've only ever owned three bikes - all new - and I've only ridden a handful of others, so I'd probably say Suzuki makes bikes that suit me quite well. The RG150 was a lovely bike for a shortie like me, and it had a great grin factor attached to it for such a small bike. The BMW F650CS is gorgeous to look at (in my eyes, and that's what counts), very comfortable to ride and has good power. Bloody expensive though. And the Goose - well, the Goose is like a grown-up RG! I feel incredibly naughty when I ride it, like having fun is somehow deviant! I've also ridden the husband's CBX550 - a bit heavy for my liking, but a neat bike for something from the 80s. I had the loan of a Honda XRB200 for a trip down south five years ago and that was a whole heap of fun. Sure it had very little in the way of power or acceleration, but on gravel it was a great little bike.

Aesthetically, I love Aprilias, MV Augustas, Laverdas, Ducatis, Brittens and just about everything else listed/not listed! I think the V-Rod and Super-Rods are neat, but apart from them, Harleys would be my least favourite bikes. Probably more to do with the culture than the bikes themselves - I've never been a fan of fringes...

Oh, and Coldkiwi - there is no apostrophe in Aprilias if you are talking plurals (more than one Aprilia) - only if you are talking about something belonging to the Aprilia - like "the Aprilia's styling...".

I like sports bikes, biggish ones (600 upwards). Don't care who makes 'em so long as they're sporty, comfy, repliable and not too pricy.
