Well disability has been a subject this weekend...............
Now as you all know I am not a Police basher but here is something that happened about 20 minutes ago.
Was in New World, noticed a non-permitted car in a Disability Space. So I waited for about 15 minutes.
There was Police identity card hanging from the mirror....mmmm, I thought.
A couple with 2 kids approach the car...I asked the guy whether he was a Police Officer, he pointed to his partner so I asked if she was a Police Office and she said yes.
I pointed out that she was parked in a disability bay etc, she was indifferent a and when I told her I had her number and would report her she said she was not bothered.
When I asked her whether she knew she had parked in a Disabled bay she actually admitted she knew...didn't even have the bits to say it was dark etc.
So called Takapuna Police, gave them details. I was given the option to make an official complaint or did I want them just to have a word. I went for the latter cause all I aim to do is make a point
Anyway, 5 minutes later (the sargeant must have known her) he calls back, says he has had a word with her and she has passed on her apologies.
Not impressed with her but good on the Police Sargeant for taking action.
She obviously did not take me seriously......was probably surprised to get a call from the Sargeant eh?..........

ok... how do you know he called her? Have you any proof other than what he said? Just that bosses on here have received complaints, done nothing, coz they think the complainant is a busy body, etc etc. You have to see it both ways...
I'm a realist :dodge:
edit: ah, you did it in person, I thought you phoned... but you can't take fingerprints over the phone, now can you?

Break in and steal it? My thoughts exactly, but make sure there are no cameras around ... it's them that gets away with things not your ordinary mostly law abiding citizen.

I've found the perfect fix for this one Graham.
Park behind them.
Get out of the car and go and do your business. Leave the Disabled pass clearly displayed in your car which is neatly parked behind the car that doesn't have one.
As a user of a Disabled parking pass, I'm no longer surprised to see the normals using our parks.

Are you sure GB? Point made maybe, but come on, this is suck mate, Police officer parking in disabled parking?........bet it was "private carpark"
you want to make a point, lodge an official complaint - sounds like she deserved it
A letter maybe to her district commander would probably be more effective and sensible, after all it was just a parking issue after all. GB complain in writing, say you rang and had a phone call back etc, but take it a step up the ladder eh? Not the "OFFICIAL" PCA thing, but a formal letter that has to be acknowledged a bit higher up the food chain

Thats what my brother does, regularly.
Just tonight I saw a black Mercedes (lowered, blacked out windows etc, mags) parked in the disabled park outside the Sunnynook Foodtown. Young punk behind the wheel, his able bodied (very much so) girlfriend jogged to the grog shop........
Maybe I should'a keyed the Merc?

It cracks me up how people do this and go round and round the car park looking for a park. Bloody hell, it only takes a minute to walk a little further. I always just go to the first park I see. If its in the far corner so what. It doesnt take much to walk, and its good for you. The only time I do the laps is when there are no parks at all. Then I just find a pedestrian and follow them to their car.

I park at the front door, but never in the way.....never in the D/A spaces. We need to take pics of tossers who park in the D/A spaces and post them here, there and everywhere.
Hey! All you coppers out there; what's the go with this shit? Can people be fined if you have a clear pic of their car in a D/A space?

We love our car, it ain't the fastest V8 Berlina in town but it's ok for us and whenever we're shopping in it (instead of the jappa) we park it way over yonder where there's no other dorks to open their doors on it or run a trolley into it. What's a few paces?

I am happy which is main thing...........not many people confront disabled parking abusers and she knew I was not scared off by her being a Police Officer....so to me job done.
Disabled parking abuse is not actually a Police matter, it is a Council matter and the fine is only $40.
I did once confront a KBer on this issue and although we sorted out via PM after the reaction at the time was not good and to be honest the other KBers there did not say anything but all water under bridge now.

Bling to you Grahame - that's a good way to handle it. You're not abusing them or stooping to their level of moronity but you ARE making sure they think twice about it in the future.
And I bet they were highly embarrassed waiting in their car without a disabled sticker on it, with your car with your sticker in behind.
And did you have a lovely long shop with lots of browsing? I hope so . . . :innocent:

There are 2 sides to it though. I am not eligable for an orange sticker because i have been told that dispite being on crutches and in a wheelchair over the last 2 years (and more to come) that i do not qualify for "disabled status" because it is not a perminant thing. I will get better so no help. However it gets frustrating crutching everywhere so i sometimes grab a disabled park for a few minutes if it is handy. Sure i feel a little bad about it but fuck it i am on crutches too. So please do not park behind me. Give me a wave as i hobble towards my car as fast as i can.
Labels suck.

R1Madness - that's incorrect. I suggest you get your GP, your ACC case worker, and anyone else who may be able to help like the Disability Commissioner on to it. People with temporary disabilities do qualify for disabled parking. If you have no luck, give me a yell and I'll help sort one out. Whoever told you you don't qualify is just trying to avoid paper work.
My reaction... call the tow trucks in, they would be there quick smart
If the driver isn't disabled, then disable the car.
Get some big stickers made up that say " I'm disabled.. I can't read", and slap one of those puppies across the back window.
These are 3 I have used, or seen used. They work.

When four of us were all going to music lessons together it pissed me off how the music centre's carparks were often filled up with people going to the gym, and trying to park as close as they could to the gym's door! :Pokey: :weird:
Obviously, they only wanted exercise they had to pay for...
I'm amazed at how many people I see with disabled cards who seem to be able to walk fairly easily. Are they traded on the black market or summat?
And I also find it weird some people who supposedly can't walk more than a few paces to the door of a supermarket or mall, yet they can wander happily around the supermarket/mall.
Before you red rep me (as if I care), my father-in-law has a disabled pass, but in his case his emphysema is so bad, he'd probably keel over if he had to walk more'n 20m (no bullshit) - even with his walker - without a rest on the way. When I've driven him places, I park wherever the hell is convenient for him: double park, no parking, footpath, or whatever. So, if I can't find a park, I make one.

Be careful with that assumption. Most of the people you see walking are parents or caregivers.
Some people with those passes have internal organ or neurological disorders that aren't obvious. MS sufferers for example have good days and bad days.
I have to put up with a lot of shit from people who obviously "know" that everyone with a disabled car park pass is in a wheelchair or obviously missing bits.
You just cannot make that assumption.

As for the first one... 120 on the motorway in the rain and in heavy wind, being blown all over the place... he saved your arse that day, by the sounds of it... you were the one likely to end up being run over by a truck???
Graemeeboy... attitude like that deserves a kicking... it will have cost her for sure though, in a jug session (she would shout the section a "round" for her monumental feck up... and a section at Takapuna consists of 1 x Senior Sergeant, 2 sergeants and up to 16 crew? Very expensive...!!!)
Mom... good call, send a letter in, higher up the food chain and all... she deserves to be dumped on from up high...
Shit flows downstream, as they say, and the higher up, the more shit gathers as it flows toward her. Serves her right!!!

Went to a car show in the weekend up at the TSB stadium with Nadroj. Got up there, parked in one of the 5 disabled parks and believe it or not, 3 of them had vehicles parked without the disability card displayed. Now I was not very impressed at that stage and the evo in frount of me looked like it needed its tyres deflated. Now fortunately for me Nadroj suggested that we go into the show and if the evo was still there, then have a crack at it. Turned out that the problem vehicles where all from a trade stand just inside the main door. So I went over to them to see what the story was. The two people that I talked to, that had their vehicles in the disabled parks, the third one had since left. Well their attitude was applalling. Their answer was that there was still two parks left so they did not see the problem. I then told them that at least I'm not a retard like them, just only a cripple. The lady immediately got quite shitty, stating that she was not interested in being abused. I told her that I was not interested in their unnacptable behaviour and attitudes. Funny thing is that I suspect that she got upset because at the end of the day the truth hurts. I then offerred to ring for a tow truck and get the offending vehicles removed. She told me to do it and she could not care less. Now as it turned out Nadroj knows the event organiser quite well and just after he payed for us to get in, the bloke just happened to be walking out as we was going in. Nadroj had a quick word with him and he had a quick word with me. Well we went on in, had a bloody good look around. Which I might add, the show was not that impressive in my opinion, probably because there was no bikes. As we went out I realised that I'd left my durries at home and it sure explained why I was a tad pissy. Well I guess the event organiser had an effective talk with the people involved, because they had gone and also taken their vehicles with them. I suspect that to this day they still believe that they had done nothing wrong. However getting the right person to talk to them appeared to be very effective. Like I said, it was a trade stand and after having to put up with their bullshit attitudes I'm buggered if I'd ever consider buying anything from them. Not a good way to make new customers. I wonder why they even bothered attending the show...
As it turned out the most interesting thing to look at was parked on the footpath next to my car. A brand new Ducato 1098. Spent a fair bit of time looking at it. It was a beauty and I'm sure if I could ride it I'd be able to get myself into alot of trouble with the local cuntstabirally.

And what is worse they were giving their Battidude to a guy in a wheelchair....no f%^&ing respect eh.
Yep I normally get abused......and get the same responses like you mentioned......they should expect to get some abuse when they have abused the rights of disabled people.....ggrrrrr
I am looking at a sign to glue on cars windows now......"I illegally parked in a disabled parking space".....

I'm certian they only get upset really because they have both been bailed up by someone in a wheelchair and also that the truth does hurt. I think sometimes that they expect someone in a wheelchair not to be assertive and they feel like they can do the bullying shit. Thats the sort of opening I truely like, they tend to get it both barrels, but appropriately and effectively. If the are dumb enough to try to make it physical they just might find out how much the removeable handles on my wheelchair, be good to know myself really. :devil2:

The Grub carries a pad of stickers advising the driver that they are in a disability park without a sticker. They are A6 size with VERY sticky glue that really dpesn't come off when the sticker is right in front of the driver's view ... {mwhahahahah}

Seen them used here! I was going to get some made but wasn't sure where to get them or how much it was going to cost and I had been on an Invalid's Benefit for several years, so had to watch the pennies.
When I was in the chair I used to get very peeved and usually reported them. The local Cops were always sympathetic to the situation and would send a letter to the offender. I think quite a few drivers got letters.... Even now, I get annoyed when I see cars without cards parked in the parks and always check to see if they have a card on display.
I guess only those who are or have been disabled can truly appreciate how important the parks are.

Pretty shit the way that these people(pricks who aren't disabled) take up these yellow car parks tho.

Good post. You raise some valid points that I hadn't really considered before.

Mrs T's mum has been disabled for years and they (Ma et Pa) have one of those stickers on their car. They find this is a common occurance. That bloody stupid cow, who happens to have a job in the police, should have been smarter. I guess it wasn't an accident that she was parked there sporting her police ID, so therefore it it was an intentional violation with possible consequences that she obviously believed she was immune to. I'd have put in the formal complaint.

remindes me of a movie where there was an obnoxious guy in a wheelchair picking fights with people.
everywhere i go i see signs saying that disabled people are people too, why should they have special carparks?

Its because society acknowledges that the disabled have mobility and other impairments. That kind of comment indicates the sort of person you are really. I was not picking a fight, I was standing, err sitiing up for my rights and the rights of all disabled people. You nicely demonstrate a systemic problem within NZ society, the "I'm just thinking about myself and stuff anyone else" mentality. I'm sure you would be the first to complain if your rights where violated eh... :finger:

all I need is glue....
CCS ran a campaign.
Short film starting with close up of wheels being removed from a car, lots of "quick, before someone sees us"..........then the camera zooms out and 4 guys in wheelchairs are shown racing away with wheels on their laps with a wheel less car behind them...real cool

The obvious solution seems to have been overlooked.
The lack of a disability's easy fixed.
FWIW I think your reaction was balanced and appropriate. They need to be absolutely above that sort of shit and I think it's likely the sarge would have torn her a new one.

Well done for sitting up to the bitch, man if I had the choice of paraplgia and having a car park exemption or my cancer and having to walk to a car park 20mts or 300mts away, what would I choose. Not a tough choice,I can walk.Who know she may well have an accident and need to use the parks herself,we can't see into the future.Bet her tone would be the same as yours to anyone using said parks, hell you guys have 2-3 parks in carparking sites, normal people have say 100 to choose from, some are so friggin lazy.

Some people are so self centered that they are merely part of the problem and don't like the truth when the solution is discussed. If this is the way society is going maybe we are all farked? :shit:

Well got my first victim with the superglue poster
He was in the car, asked him to wait, stuck on his rear screen.
He moves. Then parks behind the car legally parked in the mobility space next to us and also at a pedestrian crossing. Told him to use his brains and find a proper space. So he reverses and double parks further back.....this guy has brains....told him to find a space..he did.
This is the 3rd person I have caught waiting for girlfriend working at ASB, Devonport.
His excuse "I am just waiting a minute for my girlfriend"..after finding somewhere else to park he was still waiting 10 minutes later.
He got some of poster off but will have to scrape rest off.....joys
