A British design graduate, Piers Tucker, 24, of Yorkshire, has created a motorbike helmet that is fitted with GPS technology, which displays information about what speed the bike is travelling. The device means that the driver does not have to take their eyes off the road to monitor their speed.

Tucker says the idea is based on "Head Up Display" systems used by fighter pilots. The helmet is fitted with a small display unit, measuring approximately 2.5cm x 2cm, which has an LCD screen and can be seen to the left of the wearer's peripheral vision. It displays the speed at which the motorbike is travelling, whether the bike has its indicators on by displaying a light either side of the screen, and what gear the bike is in.

"As soon as you take your eyes off the road, you're potentially causing a hazard," Tucker added.

Motion Research Corp have come out with something very similar also utilising GPS, see link below:-

That's pretty cool :)
I don't really like the externally mounted sportview thing though.

Why not just project it onto the visor like the car ones do?

"As soon as you take your eyes off the road, you're potentially causing a hazard," Tucker added.

But you need to take your eyes of the road sometimes to be aware of oncoming traffic and other hazzards? How would that work then?

I can see how it would be good for racing though, with the lap times and stuff. But then wouldn't it be distracting? "Wohoo, I'm going aaaaaaaaah km/h and I've got 1 lap to go"...*crash*
Mind you, I think it would be very good for mountain biking or speed cycling and the such.

Is this thing going to be for retail soon? Or is it just a working model so far?

Motion Research say they will be marketing the SportVue in Oct on their web site. Retail I think initially will be $329 USD.

God I hope thats never the case. :shit:

When I first found out that you can get a WOF with a car without high stop lights, but you'll fail a WOF if your car has them and they're not working, I almost choked at my own surprise (Specially since I didn't get the WOF). If they did it with bikes....

But it would be interesting how the cops would cope with a moving 'high stop light'. hehe :D

But I suppose unless they enforce smart helmets, there ain't no harm. :whocares:

No body seems to drive 4x4's, they just sort of point them in the rough direction they want to travel :moon: :killingme

My point being:

an LCD screen and can be seen to the left of the wearer's peripheral vision.
"As soon as you take your eyes off the road, you're potentially causing a hazard," Tucker added.

Oh wait, its in your peripheral vision. That means you can see it, right, without taking your eyes off the road.....

Umm, no. You can "see" it, but it is unlikely you will be able to read it without taking your eyes off the road, and thus being a hazard...

Do you think I could hook it up to one of those portable DVD players? I wouldn't use it for porno flicks or anything y'know....um....Flick of the Wrist maybe,no....Twist of the Wrist, that's right - practical aplication right there.

BMW put an IPod (among other things) stand in their new cars, so i dont see why not. Widescreen movies projected onto the helmet visor...

Conspiracy theory:
Sounds like a real great idea.
Now all it needs is a down load port, so the Cop can see exactly what speed
you are doing and use it against you. :killingme

Gadgets for gadget sake.

But you do have to admire the technology needed to get it to work.
