View Full Version : Manawatu: Ride to Manfeild Sat .. the longer way

chanceyy
17th July 2007, 19:37
hey guys/gals ..

well its Manfeild Vic Series on sat .. Weather isn't looking the greatest .. but then today they said it would be raining & still hasn't yet .. sooooo

looking at meeting a couple of young newbie riders fr Levin (non kbers) .. thought we could go Shannon .. out towards Ashhurst & back way into Feilding ..

or swing by Palmy north .. Ashhurst .. back roads to Feilding

or open to other suggestions

& maybe head out again for a quick jaunt if time & conditions allow ....

back way?

shannon -> aokautere - > track to pahiatua - > woodville -> saddle road to ashhurst -> colyton road -> vinegar hill -> mt stewart -> mt biggs -> feilding

we might get there in time to see some racing

weather isnt supposed to be too hot tho, you're right....if it's rough enough i'll come down to shannon and ride back too....the more miles the better i reckon

hey is there actually a reason we're leaving shannon at 9? we dont HAVE to all be up that early do we? racing usually starts at about 11-11:30? (i might be way off there)

i'm not bugged...just wondering...but the poor buggers coming from wellington having to get up at 6ish to ride on winter roads:shit:.....why not leave it til 9:30-10? (and 86 will appreciate it too:lol:)

the guys from welly want to leave early .. is my understanding .. or mis understanding they coming to look at a bike in palmy .. so can take them the long way through ..

.. I am always up early so no biggie .. & thought it gives us a bit of leeway to have a ride prior ... & perhaps a cafe stop before getting to manfield .. will still be arriving about 11ish

hey is there actually a reason we're leaving shannon at 9? we dont HAVE to all be up that early do we? racing usually starts at about 11-11:30? (i might be way off there)

i'm not bugged...just wondering...but the poor buggers coming from wellington having to get up at 6ish to ride on winter roads:shit:.....why not leave it til 9:30-10? (and 86 will appreciate it too:lol:)

Not sure if there were any other poor buggers from Wellington - but I figure it's a Manawatu ride, and if I'm going to join in I'll join on your terms. And the earlier you/we leave, the further we can go, or the earlier we can get there and (presumably) wander round the pits etc. Admittedly this means I might not make it - hell, I haven't yet made it for a 10am Sunday ride from Upper Hutt - but so be it.

one of the guys is partner of one of my old teamies .. talked to him at work do last weekend .. both him & his mate have only just gotten into bikes last few months, both on learners & not been out on main highways yet .. or know how to corner, both been mostly riding round town

photocopied article outta the book for them .. kinda know how they feel .. be the first set of major cornering they gonna do ..

where abouts are you coming from in wellywood Richard ? will only take about hour & half .. but if you get to shannon early can call in for coffee anyway .. place is dead easy to find, jug will be hot ..

Karori. Yes, an hour and a half sounds about right - I rode to Palmy last Friday after work, which was about two and a half including a stop for hot chocolate at a service station in Levin. So I figured lop 15 min off because Shannon isn't that far out of Palmy, right? Then add in a bit of spare in case I get caught in traffic (streams of race bikes on trailers etc) or road works, or need to stop for hot chocolate earlier to thaw out ... and because I never leave on time anyway. So two and a half sounded about right.

i just checked my various 'sources'

at this stage, the expectation is that it will start raining (on and off) tomorrow morning sometime and will continue for most of the day but will discontinue at some point on friday night and will a farking minta day right thru to at least mid-evening on saturday (sunday might be a bit average)

so we might get damp roads here and there but they will probably dry out as the day wears on and its doubtful that we will get wet at all

updates to follow

Evening all. I've been in the garage taking off and reassembling my rear fairing. My right rear indicator started playing up last weekend and I hadn't gotten around to fixing it. It's a loose connection which obviously wasn't secured properly during the final assembly and typically it's in one of the least accessible parts of the rear structure! So, in inadequate light I had to take off both seats, lot's of bolts, clips, and still couldn't get at the damn thing properly. Anyway, I managed to get it going but I'll be waiting for it to fail again soon. It will easier in daylight :sunny:

So, I'll be at the BP on Fitzherbet at 8

Introductions done & discussion on ride prospects .. as it had rained yesterday & roads being quite damp decided to do Shannon to Ashhurst, back roads towards Feilding & we shall see wot the day brought ..

off we set .. great riding weather not to hot or cold no wind & not much traffic ..

all sweet til just before Ashhurst & Betsy got excited at seeing the river & decided to strip .. :shit::eek: her rider being blithly unware that she lost bits .. until we got to Ashhurst & Yod signalled move over . ohhh crap Another side cover gone west .. thanks for looking though Storm ..so a quick pit stop & smoke, (camera opportunity) & yod to fix the GPS unit to Betsy .. off we set again ..

After last weeks lessons in cornering felt so much better today .. the tip regarding corners & arrows .. Pearler .... makes it so much easier to know what the corner is going to do .. & had the flow going quite smooth at times ... no ooppps moments today .. also the tips from Cowboyz re head placement & where to look around the corners  it makes a huge difference .. Also today being able to follow both Al & Yod through some lines .. thanks Guys IT REALLY HELPS ...

setting a good cracking pace through the back roads yippeeeee realised that Richard had dropped off the back .. stop while the others sailed into the distance .. waited for a bit .. was about to do u turn & realised the light heading towards me was Richard again ... set off & approach the intersection & the other 3 were just on their way back to see where we had got to .... well this time it was me loosing bits .. Thanks Richard .. :dodge:

Turned towards Feilding & cafe stop for a much needed latte, flat white, hot choccy etc .. then to Manfeild .. great to catch up with everyone again ... & awesome English came over so he got introduced to a few more ppl .. Great to catch up with Yoshi & met Wendy ... (see you at the rapa bash next yr)

getting a bit late & nixing idea of heading out to vinegar hill (had to feed animals & finish cooking roast meal for visitors) decided to head out to saddle road & back over the Track ... have never done this in reverse before .. (track yes saddle no) .. took it easy as the flow was not coming .. but back road from Woodville to Pahiatua .. :scooter: with the GPS telling me wot speeds I was doing .. :dodge: hm dunno if thats something I really wanna know ..

both over Saddle & track we hit patches of Fog .. made for interesting riding cause ya could not see crap for very far .. quite surreal .. but no probs ..

over the track & l took it easy again .. headache starting to tell & really just wanted to think about every corner & wot i was doing .. at least this time I was not overcooking the corners .. taking them easy however today it did not feel like I was grabbing a handful of brake every few mins .. touching but being able to roll off the throttle a bit today ..

the boys will prob be able to give their opinions since I am a heap slower .. & occassionally they got stuck up Betsy's butt ...(yeah they was just looking at her nakid bits) ..

Good ride home & I feel I am attacking the corners more .. trying to think of each corner & where I need to be to get around it .. still cornering too early but at least realising this & know this will improve .. so not beating myself up about it ...

thanks Guys its been another fantastic day .. Great to catch up with everyone again .. & must say its awesome to see some ppl out there who have improved so much & seriously kicking ass ..

so next ride in two weeks .. (working next sat) ... chanceyy has a plan :nya:

good to hear.

I got up a little early and run over to Mansfield to give a little support to Dhunt. Had a chat and watched the practice session before coming back to get off to the kids party. Spent all afternoon surrounded by <10 year olds..

YAY
