I live in a dead end street, at one end is a main road with lights etc, at the other end is a small walkway, about 20m long, about 1 1/2 bikes wide.

If i ride upto it, slow down to walking pace, and ride through slowly, is this illegal? and as such, would the police do anything about it?

reason im asking is that the neighbour man who lives beside the walkway is a prat. and threatened to call the cops if i do it again.

and well, i'd like to get him back if its legal.

Yup - illegal. Just like if you were to drive a very small car slowly through. It's still a road vehicle on a footpath.

I must admit I'd be asking you to stop it as well. Because you may be sensible enough, but then others would see you taking your bike through and do the same, and not be so considerate. And then people, dogs, kids would be at risk of squashdom. :shit:

It'll depend on what the walkway is actually designated as on the Deposited Plan. If it is Road Reserve you may be alright, otherwise you're likely to be out of luck.

The local council may tell you for free what the status of the path is.

Edit: Where does the pathway got to? A park, another road?

Why not just wheel it through? That's not illegal.

If your no going through very fast, get off your bike and push it through. Its legal and that'll wind the guy up a bit.

Edit: beaten to it :(

Either push the bike through the walkway (or roll it through with right foot on left peg)... when the engine is off, it's not (properly-)considered a motor vehicle... I pushed/sat my bike through half of town the other day (ran out of petrol), quite a few cops passed me (I was on the footpath), and they didn't even look twice... I even still had my helmet and gloves on.

Does that mean if I accelerate to 100 in a 50 zone and then kill my engine I'm sweet?

I'm talking about walking pace (anything under 20kph as a rule of thumb)

Pedestrian walk way. Is it not obvious that you could push a scooter throgh but not ride it through under power? It's for pedestrians. Is it sign posted as a Pedestrian Way? Great fun though, nipping through where others can't go! Cheers.
