I've had a few rides on my new bike, and I happy with it.
It's an 02 and i'm told it's done 90hrs, I've started to go through the bike and service it.
I was just wondering what would be a good idea to do on the bike, ie trans oil, bearings etc. I want to make sure the bike keeps running well.
Also should I apply grease to all the grease nipples, and whats a good all purpose grease?

disclaimer: all of this is my opinion and to date hasnt failed me.
id reccommend replacing ur trans oil every 8 or so hours, i use automatic transmission fluid (this raises a whole differnt mass-debate)
greasing your suspension bearings also doesnt hurt, but can take a while if you knock all the roller out. alternatively just replace them. (dont forget about the top of the shock and the swingarm)
what grease nipples do yo have? ive been told grease niples arent a good idea as when you pump grease in often the lip on the seal will flip over and then let all the shit in.
chains like oil
filters work best when clean.. i reccommend doing this at least once a ride, if its dusty, change between races / loops or whatever
steering bearings like grease,
anyone got anything do add?

Oil filter may need a change ?
And rember riding your bike is all good but if not looked after
can cost you alot of money (dam thing costs alot just to maintain aswell)
I work on my bike after every ride.

How old is the piston and ring/s? May be a good idea to do them sometime soon. Are you on the shore? I'm sure that Booom would like to show you how to do it all!!! LOL

OK here is what i do to my 2 strokes
Air FIlter after every ride, (if we are racing sometimes every race)
Oil change every 3rd ride (approx 6-10 hours)
Piston and rings on GasGas 200 are good for around 100 hours trailriding, so if it has not been donen i would look at it, they run a wesico forged piston in them (but you can only buy it though gas gas) so make sure you warm it up good,
Gas GAs come standard with grease nipples, you do not need to pump alot of gearse into them, i would use them but it may be worth while pulling the pivots out to check them, if they are all seized they may need replacement,
they are a well made bike, with alot of parts on them that cross over from other brands, parts in NZ can be a pain in the ass at times

Always most importantly is you must have a clean air filter.
For the sake of it buy a spare one and have it ready to go.
I read an article and stick to it which says to clean your air filter in mineral turps which is cheap as for a 4L at the wharehouse.
After cleaning and re-rinsing with fresh turps allow to dry and apply oil.
An easy way to oil a filter is to put the filter in a plastic bag and pour some oil in.Scrunch up the bag a little and work the oil into the filter.Keeps your hands clean and is great if you have a couple to do.You can always keep your spare oil in the oiled bag.
Just a little tip on filters and the importance of keeping them clean.

sweet, thanks for the info.
So far after each ride I've cleaned the air filter , and sprayed lube on the chain.
I've also changed coolant, trans oil, and the front wheel bearing due to play.
But any other ideas to protect the bike are great.
I noticed yest that the the expansion chamber has only one spring and there is a lot of oil/shit round the pipe goes into the engine. So I'm going to put a new o-ring, and springs. Should I also change the muffler packing?
The exhaust o-ring is the same as the ones used on a late cr250r, anyone know the size???

Not sure yet, pos sat. What day were you thinking of going up?
You got any idea what size the exhaust o-ring is on your bike?

the o ring used on the 04 CR250 is different to the one used on the 06 CR250, the 04 the pipe fits externally over the flange, whilst on the 06 the pipe fits internally.
if yours is an internal, please let me know, as one of 2 on mine are broken!

Make sure when you do get a new o-ring that the material is viton.A viton o-ring will withstand the heat whereas a normal o-ring will dry and crumble when exposed to heat.A viton o-ring is usually orange.
Also you can over lube a chain.Too much lube attracts dust etc into the links and causes excessive wear to chain and sprockets.
I hadnt noticed the external/internal difference between the models.I had an 04 and updated to an 07 when they came out.Atleast the 04 plastics fit the 07.

You sure thats turps most everywhere I've read its Kerosene. I was using turps as I had a 20L tin but went to Kero as the filters where starting to look a bit sad. Found a good price for a 20L kero at mini tankers in Mays road, onehunga.

yea i dont think there are a lot of mafor differences, just something i noticed when i was working on cheese's bike for him and noticed it was different to mine - therefore obviously expansion chambers cant be swapped witout also swapping over the exaust port flange thingee

just took the exhuast off to look at the piston. I'll prob replace it soon, just wondered what people thought the condition was like. Does it look like it needs changing, I don't know just from looking but prob will anyway.
Thanks

You can do no maintenance and just replace things when they brake but........
I would give the bike a complete service if you want to keep it in good shape. Do this every 6 months or so to keep bike well maintained
6 monthly maintenance:
-Check all the bearings, steering head, linkage, top suspension, swing arm, front and back wheel. Grease them all or replace if needed.
-Clean the carb, pull it out take the float and that off then spray crab cleaner all through it then use compressed air gun to blow all the crap out.
-Check sprockets and chain replace if needed.
-Check brake pads and tires, replace if needed
-Basically give a good going over check everything.
- 90 hours on piston depends if raced or not, but might want to do a top end to ensure it's fresh. Clean power valve when doing this.
For regular maintenance:
- Change gearbox oil every 10 hours, probably don't have to do it that often if just trail riding but doesn't hurt.
- clean air filter as needed, when gets dirty, or after a days riding like a trail ride or something.
- Check chain and adjust.
After every ride:
-good overall wash with soapy water brushes and hose, make sure to give chain good clean. You can use water blaster to wash but the water gets past the seals and shortens the life of bearings and wrecks the seals. If you do use water blaster don't point directly into bearings.
-Can clean chain if you want with wire brush, but make sure you lube the chain no matter what.
-lube foot pegs, clutch lever and brake lever
-Quick overall check, tighten bolts 2strokes bolts loosen up alot
-Also you can give all metal parts a wipe or spray with CRC or WD40 something like that, spray silicon on the plastics and forks legs. When spraying on plastics give it a rub in with a rag.
Probably missed something.. have fun riding

Looks likes its been quite used but i wouldn't be able to tell how long thats got to go. Do a compression test and ask on here and/or at a shop if they think you should replace.

Its hard to tell looking like that. but it wouldn't hurt to put a new one in so you know that its new. WRT got a bike off a mate of a mate with a "new piston" and it broke!!
I'd keep riding it and just do it sometime soon.
Bikes looks tidy!!

Just got a couple more questions.
Looked all over the shore for, 2x exhaust o-ring 48mm, and 2x exhaust springs 69mm (although prob a couple mm shorter would be fine). Had no luck so if anyone has any ideas where to try that would be great.
Also want to get a hotter plug, and the manual states a BR8EG as standard. Do I have to stick to a BR7EG, or can I use say a BPR6ES?
And lastly to do a compression test do I have to remove the fuel line?
Thanks again for the help so far.

Ok as far as I know an 8 is pretty hot anyway. I think I'd stick with the 8.
I got some springs from colemans suzuki. they had a large range. I have some left from teh RM I think that didnb't fit. I'll see how long they are.
