Been looking at getting some leather bike gear and came across a US website called LeatherUp.com.Their prices seem very good and the US$ is weak at the moment so good time to buy.Just wondering if anyone on KB has dealt with them before and how good they were and the quality of their gear ,etc? What could one expect to pay for shipping, import duties etc?:dodge:

Just trying to clarify here, are you implying you think Quasi gear is sub standard, or the bench mark that all others should be aiming toward achieving?

Damn! Those are some very cheap prices. I want to get all kitted out in some `classic' leather gear, as the Quasi cordura is nice and warm and practical but leather is just... sexy :D
I like those tall `Sicily' leather boots. And I have to get me one of those ultra-cool diagonal zip jackets hahaha.
Of course, we don't know how it crashes -- we do know how Quasi's gear crashes, and it does so with flying colours. However I've already crashed once, and don't plan to do it again, so I could probably ride in my boxer shorts if it wasn't so cold.
EDIT: You asked about shipping, here's their page on international shipping: https://www.leatherup.com/pg/jsp/help/internationalshipping.jsp . New Zealand is on their list, which is good.
They say $15.95 for the first `shipping unit' (apparently 1lbs), then $5.50 for each additional unit. That's 4-6 days apparently, so not too bad. Wonder how much jackets and boots weigh?

You can see just by looking at the photos how thin the leather is. Sure doesn't look 2mm thickness to me! A friend got a similar type of cheapy leather jacket off ebay, supposedly 1.2mm thickness, and it was no better than a dress jacket. So she had to spend more money on a jacket from a reputable brand name.
These would be fine for wearing as a fashion item, but that's about it, I think. And I've heard the cheaper jackets easily come apart at the seams in a crash as you are scraping down the road. Ouch! :shit:

Check out www.Amazon.com I know they do books but they also have a number of other categories as well; including motor cycle clothing. You might just be surprised.
In my experience of buying bike gear and bike parts you won't pay import duties but you will pay courier fees and these might end up making it cheaper to buy in New Zealand when the overall cost is added up. Worth thinking about and getting your calculator out.
Shopping around for bargains has its downside especially if you can't see the quality of what you are getting. But there are bargains out there. Going for a recognised brand name is one way to ensure quality, the down side is you are also paying more for the name. Most websites allow you to ask the seller questions about thickness of leather and so on, and usually American companies reply pretty quickly and in my experience are honest. Ask questions.
Personally if I think I can get it cheaper and quicker and I'm happy with the quality then that is where my money goes, and not on the brand name. That is my choice.

Shipping will be quite expensive. 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg :(
So the saving is effectively cancelled out. Well it's still there, but nowhere near as substantial. But might as well go down ot the shop and buy from there instead of having to wait for ages.

I agree,I hate paying extra for a brand name. For me its function first and looks second. although its nice to have both.Whilst checking out LeatherUp they said if you were from outside the US or Canada then you could buy their gear through Amazon,so it might pay to check if any of the gear on Amazon is the same as on LeatherUp site.I like their classic range and some of their shirts to but I agree the leathers look thin despite their write up.I like to be able to try on clothes as I'm an awkward size, tall and thin. When is Quasimoto going bring out he's new range he keeps promising?
