Now im not planning on doing this but it just sprang to mind. Say i want to go hunting, or shooting or whatever at a friends farm or something and the only way i can get myself and my rifle there is to take it on my motorbike. If i was to put it in a guncase would i be able to hang it over my back and ride there? Or do you think a cop wouldnt like that idea? =P
Just wondering.

In answer to your question i can only point to my experiences.
I partake in the sport of Cowboy Action Shooting and often travel to events.
As my only means of transport is a motorbike I have on occasion carried with me on the bike the following kit
2 .44 magnum pistols
1 .44 magnum lever action rifle
1 12 guage lever action shotgun
3-400 rounds of .44 magnum ammunition
100 12 guage shotcun rounds.
The pistols i keep in a locked box strapped to the rack. The rifle and shot gun I have either carried strapped to the side of the bike or over my back.
I have had no problems being stopped by the police. i carry them sensibly. I make sure i have my Firearms Licence on me. All possible safety precautions are compiled with.
Last year I bought an antique rifle from a farmer in Dargaville. I had no rifle bag or sling so I ried a piece of rope onto it to act as a makeshift sling and carried it over my back. Dargaville to Sth Auckland with no hassles. I passed a number of police cars and expected to be pulled every time but this didnt happen.
personally I have no problems with carrying a rifle on a bike.
here is a quandry for you.
In NZ you are not allowed to carry a concealed weapon.
In carrying a rifle it is concealed from view.
Are you breaking the law?

Can't speak for where you life but years ago when I had a trail-type bike (XL350) I just threw the rifle over my shoulder - I use to wrap the breech/scope area in a rag to stop mud/dust getting in.
Never ever got pulled up, even nowadays you MAY get stopped just to see you actually had a firearms licence, also a gun-case would also be best.
Of course in certain parts of good 'ol NZ you might just cause a whole passle 'o trouble riding around with a rifle over your shoulder....

Actually i have always wondered that too, and i have been tempted to try it, i cant see why it would be bad, gun in a case and unloaded and you have a licence for it. Though i could imagine the cops freaking and over exaggerating. lol

I regularly go rabbit shooting with Stinker (my dog), quad and a 22. I admit that a few years ago, members of the public who saw me used to nod and ask if I had shot anything. As often as not now days I get looked at as if I just might be a crazy. Maybe I need a haircut !

Also remember to look like you know what you are doing.
Riding in jeans and a T shirt that says, "Death to all" might not be the best thing

I have riden with my gun bag slung over my shoulder fairly often for the last 20 years and have never had any problems.

it depends on the area, if there is alot of drunken violence in that area or if its a suburban area concerend citizins will ring up and then there will be a bit of a man hunt for the guy running around with a rifle pointing it at people and shooting the air......
Ive wanted to transport an air rifle over my back on my bike, I decided not to as I had the wrong licence for the bike. I would do it If i wasnt braking any other laws...

Some years back...
A mate had his 303 slung across his back while riding and was pulled over. The main comment from :Police: was that it should be in a bag and not open to view by the public.

I have a take down Norinco copy of the Browning semi auto with a red dot scopehttp://www.marstar.ca/gf-norinco/22-JW-20.shtm
which fits into the panniers of the Beemer. Been around the South island with it etc.
The real brownings are better made, but the Norinco is ok. A bit fussy on feeding some ammo tho.
I also took a SLR home in a backpack when they were sold off from the army, with the muzzle sticking out the top.

I've ridden with a rifle in a soft case slung over my shoulder a couple of times. No hassle. I believe SpankMe has been pulled over and had his firearms licence checked in a similar situation, but then, he looks even more dodgy than I do.
Shouldn't be any problems if the gun's in a case and your firearms licence is in order.

Keep it in the case is the good advice. Make it look like youre a regular good dude and that it would be hard for you to pull out the boomstick and you should be good. Of course if you dont have a firealarm licence then its probably asking for trouble. but i believe it is not illegal (not that that stops the cops giving you a hassle)

Hey Geoff, I have an original Browning, still in the box in came in, price sticker in pounds. Mine still shoots well, but won't feed low velocity ammo. Cool 22s !

I'm sure I read a thread (did a search but couldn't find it), or on harold?, about someone who was travelling through Welly and decided to go and have a look at the Beehive while waiting for the ferry.
From what I can remember, he had a rifle in a carry bag over his shoulder.
Apparently the police etc were a little woried about someone with a rifle turning up near our highly respected pollies, on a bike, with a rifle!
Go figure....
