Pro-ana refers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pro-ana)to a group or subculture that promotes or supports anorexia as a lifestyle choice rather than an eating disorder.

That's absolutely hideous. The poor girls are victims of a disease society created - it didn't exist 50 - 100 years ago. Stupidly they way they look there they still think they're too fat. Much bigger girls have died of malnutrition even this year trying to slim down as models.

geez, i'm more or less at a happy weight for my size, of course it would be nice to drop about 5kgs, but i'd never want to be a bag of bones... REAL women have CURVES, not boney outcroppings... I support people who are not aftraid to have a little bit of love handle (however, in saying that, theres a difference between curvey and fat) ...

These girls have serious mental issues.....treatment is scarse/under resourced at best, the best they can do for most girls is get them to put on a bit of weight....but their headspace is still fucked

this is muchly true... the thing is... therapy is needed as well as kind of fource feeding these stick insects (no offence, but its true)...
I know someone who had problems in highschool with eating disorders and stuff, she's one of the most beautiful girls i know, and when she disappeared from school for a few months after steadily growing more skinny and more pale, we all knew what it was... but, she got back into a normal headspace, got some therapy and started eating again, and now she loves baking and cooking and is once again a good weight and curvey as a latino!evidence that people CAN get over this...It's just hard going to do so... and people who aspire to be thin are just kidding themselves... eat right and excersise regularely and you'll be guarenteed to be at your ideal weight... forget the BMI bullshit...

Had a little to do in the past with the world of modelling and very unfortunately, girls like these are a reality.
I've always been small boned, and so always on the "slight built" type and I used to get all sorts of comments between 16 and 20 years of age...it was hard for me to put on weight...meisuring 5.8" and weighing in at 45kgs, but I had always been as healthy as a horse and I certainly never looked like these girls.
Anorexia is a disease, but those girls start very young and the peer pressure for the absolutely thin look is unbelievable...
thankfully, runways around the world are now starting to change this around...for example, in Milan it is now forbidden to do catwalk work unless you have curves, real ones...
Hopefully, the mentalities are changing.

It's yet another mental illness - this time manifesting itself as body dismorphia. Those poor chickies will look at themselves in the mirror and see someone two stone overweight!!
Interestingly, it is very much a rich western society disease. In cultures where people have to worry about surviving, eg because of war or starvation, or it is a subsistance culture, anorexia doesn't exist.
And now I've just seen the post which shows it has been photoshopped! Why bother? Someones put a hell of a lot of time and effort into falsifying facts to prove their point. I don't get it.

Good way to end up like that is when you have someone who on a daily basis tells you that you are fat, and keep on calling you "lard arse"
You eventually are unable to see the real you, even when you end up being skin and bones, all you see is the lies people are feeding you

I've been trough that myself, my brother has done it EVERY day of my life, and is serious about it... my mother has also always been critical of my weight (she suffered from eating problems when she was around my age up until after she was married to my father even) some days I've taken notice of it and gotten really distressed, other days I just think, I am what I am, I do what I want...
since I turned vegetarian, the tables have turned... I HAVE lost SOME weight, but nothing that drastic, and they now say that I'm "fading away" especially my father... and they try to make me eat more, or try to get me back onto meat.. but in truth, I feel way more healthy than ever (and I DO get all my nutrients, I know how to eat sensibly)
so, after all of this.. there is loads of pressure, even from people who you wouldnt think would be so completely insensitive about it... and changing diets DOES change people's views... but if you arent well informed about what changes to make, it can lead you into trouble... its a fine line...

Know what its like.. Used to be 54kg, and would be picked on for being "skinny".. Still had people calling me fat etc etc.. gets to you after a while.. apparently I'm "small" but I don't see that for myself.. Because of high stress when mum went to aussie for a while after dad died, and bad diet (lived off yoghurt and fruit) I dropped to 50kg, body couldn't handle it and pretty much had everyone complaining that I looked sickly..
After meeting my partner, I've become much happier.. I eat LOTS... I'm now 58kg.. Yet now I get called nasty things like "lard arse" and "fatty" ain't in a joking manner either.. Had my ex pinch my arse and say "noticed its gotten fat, can tell it definately has"

Look, I'm sorry but I have to say something here...I don't know you, but honnestly: NO WOMAN should put up with [B]anyone[B]telling them that their arse has gotten fat in that manner...Nor calling you those names!
I'm not saying that you should break their faces but do not let them get to you...
People will make such comments based on their own perception of what the "body beautiful" should be and I'll bet that 99% of these people will actually not feel good about their own body to start with...so who the heck are they to criticise???
I used to be in a relationship where I was made to feel like that, and I am a strong advocate for getting out of it.
Do not, under any circumstance, let someone else determine who you are...only you can do that!

Saying shit like that is just a way to bring you down to their level.. And leave you feeling worthless and like no one else could ever want you..
It hurts yes.. But when you walk down the main street of town, and notice your ex driving past staring like some freak.. You realize that they know what they have actually lost (Must be great if they still can't keep their eyes off it after a year right??).. Can't be all that disguisting if they can't not gawk..
Gorgeous to some.. Disguisting to others.. Personal taste.. There will always be someone out there who likes you for you

Good on you...That's one of the great privileges of growing older: you stop giving a hoot about what other people think... The "I'm no oil painting, and if I'm not to your taste and can't be civil/polite about it, then get out of my face" attitude is becoming more prevalent for me...

The insulted person not only has their spirit broken but they ALSO give the insulter all their personal power by letting it affect them, does the nobody deserve to be rewarded in that way.....? I don't think so!
If it was someone who I respected that called me insulting names I would seriously re-evalute my opinion of that person.

haha, okay.. i have another example of people trying to change your weight... I used to be with this guy who was someone who liked fuller women... This guy kept telling me that He'd love it if my "bum wobbled more" and kept trying to feed me crap... I think it was mainly a culture thing gone wrong... but yeah, he was really kind of screwed..
then, he started telling me that I was getting fat, and so I was incredibly confused.... but yeah, all through this the guy was doing other things to undermine my confidence and demean me as a woman... (rather disgraceful) and whats worse i stayed with him for 10 months in fear of feeling guilty for dumping his arse...
when i went away with my folks on a cruise for 12 nights then came back, i had reached a better weight and more stable mental space after just that short with no contact with him... and needless to say, i threw him to the trash (endured several months of him stalking me and calling me a fat bitch after though :s) but took control of myself and now i'm healthy! :D

There was another thread where people were going on about what a blimp and stuff some chick was, she was overweight, yes, but she obviously still had some love for the way she looked given her pose, and there's this thread with people going on about how disgusting these malnutritioned girls are for being so thin. Sometimes the negative attitudes of others affect people's self image to the point where they either overeat or stop eating all together, it's really easy to judge when you're perfect I'm sure!

It's very easy to say "Geeze go on a diet and get some exercise" to someone who's overweight or "Eat a pie for Christ's sake" to someone who's underweight, but we don't know what has made that person that way really, and the reality is, would you say that to their faces, a stranger in the street? I know I wouldn't, it's none of my business, they may be happy the way they are, and if they're not, me going up to them and saying "geeze, here have my pie, you need it more than I do" is not going to make a blind bit of difference. We ALL struggle with our body image sometimes and all deserve an ear to listen to us in those moments.
I'm happy to be that hear for ladies or gents:yes:
Oh, sorry
I was yanking your chain, don't fret.

There's that, and I believe that men and women care differently about different things. By and large men have simpler insecurities.

Hehe, I reckon!! A pizza and a dozen Speights to celebrate my thunder thighs sounds good to me, what's your poison and affliction? :Punk:
OMG.... ME TOO, I'll bring the pizza!... and a croissant! :D
A part of growing up is not trying to change yourself for anyone. Be happy with who you are. Beauty to me is on the inside. So many 'good looking' people have personaities of a dog, and in that makes them 'ugly' in my eyes.

Yep, basically what I was getting at.
Rant over.
Agree with ya posts there Trudie girl .. my motto .. ppl either have to accept me as I am or fuck off ... simple really .. weight has always been an issue for me, & slowly but surely its coming off .. but every day is a struggle and can be frustrating esp when you want results more quickly
My g/f opposite end of spectrum she was far to skinny .. ate way more than I did & used to hate that everyone mentioned how skinny she was .. funny really .. two ppl polar opposites in weight & we both had our insecurities .. was great to be able to talk freely about it & understand where each person came from
also age is a great thing .. you really get past being self conscious & worrying about others opinions .. & you begin to really live your life ...

I used to be with this guy... stayed with him for 10 months... threw him to the trash (endured several months of him stalking me and calling me a fat bitch after though :s)
You know what scares me?
18-year-old girls talking in the tone of middle-aged women looking back on a hard life.
Where's the innocence? Don't parents protect their kids any longer?

well no, i was never protected, i was FORBIDDEN... there is a difference.. and I was made to grow up by myself, my brothers were always nurtured.. but being the third child and the only girl... well my folks just left me to it.. I had to grow up fast... at least my father has always been good to me.. hes a Nazi-type dictator.. but at least he gave a crap!! my mom on the other hand.. well, she DEFINATELY has my brothers as her favourites no matter how much she denies it...
hence, I sound like a 42 year old... (and look like one too quietly)

I'm used to people thinking I sound a lot older than I am too AJ, so I know exactly what you mean.
then, he started telling me that I was getting fat, and so I was incredibly confused.... but yeah, all through this the guy was doing other things to undermine my confidence and demean me as a woman... (rather disgraceful) and whats worse i stayed with him for 10 months in fear of feeling guilty for dumping his arse...
It doesn't matter what the relationship is, it's simply not acceptable in any relationship to criticise someone for their weight or body shape. It sort of goes like this: "If you really think I'm that fat or ugly, why the hell are you with me? In fact, since you can't appreciate me for me, I don't think you're allowed to be with me. Fuck off." Obviously it depends on how serious the criticism is... but IMO noone's allowed to criticise anyone they're with like that. If you think I'm too fat for you, go somewhere else. Maybe I really want to lose weight, even for you, but if you're not willing to love me regardless? Then you're not much of a person.
I should point out here, in reply to some earlier messages, that it's not only girls who get this - guys feel insecure about their bodies / weight / musculature as well, and some simple comments even meant in jest can be quite cutting. We all hear girls talking away to their girlfriends / workmates about some sexy guys they met or whatever... when they do it in front of you (couple of girls at my work were on about it today), it makes you feel as though you're totally irrelevant when it comes to that sort of conversation, that you wouldn't ever be the subject of a couple of girls saying "man he was sexy, wouldn't have minded..." etc.
I don't know, maybe that didn't make a great deal of sense, but you get what I mean.

Hmmm, not entirely true but not a bad point either.
I have a 'rounded' missus, it bothers her, not I. I have a very slim daughter, it bothers nobody. My lady is a beacon of affection and tries to lose weight, walks daily, eats like a sparrow and is the best thing that ever happened to me.
My daughter has just turned 17 yet had to wait six months to qualify to give blood at 50kgs. She's now 53kgs. To look at her you would understand that she's slim, yes, but in proportion to herself and very healthy.
My other daughter is slightly heavier, taller and stronger. I love them equally.
People vary, so do opinions.
While the females in the first picture do nothing for me and I can appreciate why some people find them unattractive, there must be some market for them, otherwise they wouldn't do what they do to look like that. There are some 'fat' porn sites for example, all sorts of weird shit to make people 'happy'.
I have a black t-shrt and a pair of jeans, what more fashion do you need?

A lot of what you say is true, a lot of what you say could (could) have been said by a lover with a small penis. "Love for who I am, not for the size of my dick" etc etc. Try telling that to an insecure sixteen year-old boy with a miniscule dick, bad acne and a stutter.
You get what you get when you get it, like boobs for girls I guess. Some things in life just ain't fair.

why did this turn into a "dicks and love" topic?
bringing it back... I think that the media is horrible in how they portray "beauty"...
and as for the skinny chicks... well obviously most clothes "look better" in the media eye, on skinny people, than they do on normal sized to rounded people... its the sad truth we have to live with in a society where media has run amok!!
