RIDE IS CANCELLED
Will have to plan anew for the week after next ('cause Mav's got his one on! Huzzah!)
Greetings 250 riders,
For those who were not riding last year, Maverick, and McJim organized a series of rides aimed at 250cc riders who were on their learners or restricted licenses.
The goal was to provide a safe but challenging environment for newer bikers to learn skills and gain experience on the open road and to meet other bikers at a similar level.
I was privileged to start my riding career on the second of these outings and got so much learning out of them, safely! (edit : apparantly due to a repressed memory dredged up by McJim, I will now have to take to some self-flagellation :pinch:)
This ride will be a nice run out through the country, with a lunch stop on the way, more details to come shortly.
It is not "limited" specifically to 250cc bikes, (previous "graduates" and others are more then welcome) but please be aware that we will be going at a sensible pace.
If you want to sign up for the ride to be sent details you can do so here:
http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=1333&day=2007-7-29&c=1
I hope that we will see a few old faces and a few new ones,
GI
PS - If this post seems perzackerly the same as a certain other's posts. I'm just dotting my i's and crossing my t's! And d'oh! Just worked out how to allow people to sign on or up for the event :p This forum thing can get hard even with the number of posts I have!

I thought your first experience was binning on the Ardmore village corner with The_Dover.
May turn up - need to check the number of brownie points I have.

I had managed to repress that memory of The_Dover :eek5: Thank you for making me... mummy... safe place, safe place ... safe place ... :baby:
Thanks to that, I can bin very nicely all on my ownsome now! :p :o
Actually before that, I think I kept stalling on the lights on Gt Sth Rd. before the Takanini on ramp to go north :eek5: Fortunately I could push my bike to the side like a scooter and make funny flapping gestures as I wondered how to start it up again!
Oh yeah... I forgot to sign myself up for the ride event as well! :stupid:
Would you guys be riding at 100kph?

Would you guys be riding at 100kph?
Some will yes... others may even exceed that if they wish.
But there will be a TEC (Tail End Charlie) who will ride at the pace of the slowest rider, sort of the nanny of the group.
Nothing wrong if you're a rider who likes to take ya time and ride within the law as it may apply to your conditions.
These rides (specifically gijoe1313 and Maverick organised ones) are VERY newbie friendly.

I remember a ride coming back in the twilight to darkness falling from Kaiaua. You were point and cracking along at a brisk pace :eek5:
I think that was good practice before I did that ride out Gizzy way one night/day!

Surreal is when the Scotsman organizing the ride dissapears in the middle of it and winds up somewhere completely different from the rest of the ride!

Try 6 days of solid work with a couple of drunkin evenings ... LOL ... no time to even find one of the local dealers of two wheeled machines much less drool over said pieces of exquisite machinery.
Hmm... I wish I could join (really).
But I guess at the moment, Im just too noob to ride over 80kph :( lol
But mainly Im scared if my Scorpio will get blown by the wind at 80kph+
Well have fun guys :)

No worries, Maverick's next ride is down south ... and I will be organising another ride similar to his after that (unless he does it first again!)
There will always be more opportunities for newbie friendly rides 'cause Maverick/McJim/others and I will always be doing them (we enjoy pootling along and don't have that "need for speed")
And hey, when you do feel confident, you know you'll be ready for them!

Hahah your Scorpio will be fine, my bike's lighter than yours and it still feels rock solid at 140kph. In actual fact, the faster you go, the more `locked in' a bike seems to get, due to gyroscopic stuff and the wind head-on perhaps, I don't know.
These rides are very laid back -- you can ride as slow as you like, the hardcore sportsbikers welcome the opportunity to rest their numb arses and wrists while they wait for the slower riders to catch up haha. In fact, the roads are nice and twisty, so even the experienced riders will be doing less than 80kph a lot of the time.
If you do come along, you won't be much slower than me anyway, so there'll be somebody to keep you company -- I'm Tom, the ultra-Nana :D<hints id="hah_hints"></hints>

By the time we catch up, you'd have rested all your sprotsbiker bits and we can toodle off again! Heheh...

It swirves side to side when a strong wind blows... TAHT scares me the most.

It seems a weird thing to say to someone who's new to riding, but that sounds perfectly normal. You honestly just eventually get used to it and adapt and learn how to position yourself in strong wind. Do a search for something wind and riding in this section and a few threads should pop up, they all give great advice on how to better yourself in the wind.

Aye, I remember the last ride I did out that way with Winter and co. and he was saying things like "eek! That wind is blowing me around!" ... and you know, it wasn't a problem with him in the end, he got used to it and just handled the jandal (I told him actually that wasn't so windy as opposed to how windy it could get!)
I think it was just 'cause we ended up in Dargaville after doing the Brydnwyns and I felt the need to keep going after Ruawai! :innocent:

So who fancies a learner friendly pootle on Saturday? The weather looks like it may get nasty and wet for Saturday and I thought I might send the missus out on her 150 since it needs a bit of a run. Not a long distance ride since we can only really get 3 hours at a time due to the kids and the lack of family/babysitters (hence we get ruled out of too many rides!).

A certain bike needs to have a good go at the outdoors just to keep it feeling wanted, if it's a short and steady ride I may be tempted to take it instead of me ol' 250

You mean you didn't ride over the harbour bridge several weeks ago?
And you handled it...thus making you capable of riding in "SEVERE WINDS" ... heck that ain't nuffink! I once rode around a corner without doing anything because the wind was so severe it just did it for me! :eek5: :woohoo:
And oh yeah... I think the phrase is take some HTFU pills! Either that ... or ride a naked bike! :devil2:

I was thinking of a Learner friendly pootle on Saturday - probably only about 200km all up - I'll be acting as meat shield in a cage (TEC) with my children and will let Chickadee (my wife) get some kms on her angry little 2 smoker.
What would people prefer? Early morning, late morning or early afternoon?
Shame the weather looks piss poor for Sunday Justin. I know you have commitments (great DVD can I borrow it?...tat's shoite!) but if you could get away for a wee while it would be good to see you out on t'road.
Maverick says he may or may not bring his weather genie...it depends on whether or not he gets laid the night before.......don't all look at me in that accusatory manner thanks very much - he's not my type (never owned a Honda).
Will speak to SWMBO when I get home and will log bnack in to see if there's any interest.
This will not be a balls out 'how big is my penis' 250 race - it will be a learner friendly pootle at legal speeds along some quiet country roads. Big bikes are welcome so long as they appreciate this is for the newer riders.
