Ok I just bought my second zxr 400. The last one never made it to the track:doh:
This one has indicated it might be keen to get there. The first indication was the muffler. After market and New looking(on an old bike).
The second and most give away the air box looks like swiss cheese with thousands more holes drilled in it!!!!!!:woohoo:
Once started for the first time(bought site unseen) it reved out quicker than you could say yes to a root.....(not australian there's a 't' in there)
I was planning on making it a stunt/street fighter. But what about the track? Any one got any parts for these?
Advice?
I need anything from the steering head forward. ANYTHING?
Especially the throttle cables

Yeah bro,
Race it. The ZXR is a good wee bike for F3. You have a good strong local club scene up there. Get out to Pukekohe and have a chat to some of the organisers and other F3 competitors.

well you have done the exhaust and carbs.. does it have a ram air intake? if not make one up. get a 17" rim with good rubber higher set pegs, get suspention sep up correctly, run it total loss and get some race fearings for it.. the first thing i would do after a ram air intake is to dyno tune it and get it jejetted as its probably running real lean

you wont beat me tho :) so invest in some track time 1.10 is a respectable lap time for that bike at puke
Ha ha. Just did my first track day at taupo on my fireblade. Was great fun but definately need some telling how to do things.
Should nt take much to get the zxr on the road. When is the next puke day for this class?

Get thine arse onto the track and do a track day or two.
My experience with ZXR400's says get the brakes sorted and service the suspension. If its a roadie that hasn't been modified you need to remove the speed/rev limiter for pukie or she will stop at 190km/h
You'll be happy for quite a long time with the ground clearance and how she runs

Will do frosty boy.
Cant wait to get me leg over!!!!
I have to replace all the seals in the forks and brakes As they all were damaged in a fiery incident.
Any tips on the brakes, as the forks should be straight forward.

Didnt do many of those things at taupo on the weekend. It would have been funny watching a blade go round the track in really high revs but not going fast. lol So I like the sound of a high pitched squeal. Who doesn't.
So Coffee.... Friday?

With the brakes Yup Order a seal kit then strip both calipers and the master cylinder down. By that I mean all pistons out completely from the calipers. Polish the sides of them till they gleam. Clean out the master cylinder.Fit New seals and use rubberlube when you refit the pistons.
I'd fit braided lines as well.
Seems like a lot of work I know but you won't believe how much better the brakes work
With the back brakes as long as they work ok Id just clean up the pistons and put in new brake fluid. The idea being simply to reduce the drag fromthe back brakes as much as possible but still have effective brakes

personally I don't think running total loss is a must...more trouble than its worth in my opinion (my opinion probably isnt worth much but anyway)
I'd say get on and ride it and worry about the mods when you are being held back by the bike

Thats probably what I'll do. Both ways are good advice..
When the time comes I'll rip it to bits(if it hasn't broken already) and from the ground up make it mean!

yea like what was being discussed in the pro twins thread, a fast rider on a standard bike is usualy quicker than a slow rider on a fast bike.
spend money on the track time, and just time on the bike (cleaning/bike prep etc)would be my advice

Jeeze boy you talk some shit.:dodge:
ZXR400s have 17 inchers as stock. They have very good ground clearance as stock -TS had his zorst liftin the rear on his before the pegs were decked.Total loss is a waste of time and effort for the small HP gain.Verses the starting issues ayou will encounter.HOW THE FUCK are you gonna dyno tune a bike with ram air you idiot.
Westy my advice based on a couple of seasons racing zxr400's
Do the shocks n brakes. Give the engine a birthday-Oil Filter, do the shims,do sort out the rev limiter
Fit a set of crash bungs and if the fairings mint yea get a glass fairing
I'd also read the -"Wanna go racing ?" thread and get a spare set of levers -they are the first bit to break in an off.
Go do a couple of trackdays then maybee do the last round of the Vic club series in Clubmans 2 so you aint under any pressure.
I totally agree with young Tim.Ride till the bike is the slowing factor then decide what you're gonna do

Your bike sounds like crap. In fact I think that you should get rid of it asap. I would be happy to take it off your hands and see how she races...honestly I would! Trackdays are a good start mate!

Yeah good point learn to ride the bike good first then when you feel the need to get mods those are a good place to start

ok well for starters im only going with what i know from my vfr my vfr has a 18" i assumed it had one to but its good it only has a 17", runnign total loss makes a pretty big difference when raceing ask nicksta she won the race because of that! as for tuneing the bike for ram air make it run a bit ritcher i guess so it allows for more air when traveling faster??? i just got ram air on my bike and a more freer airbox so i bet its running real lean

DUDE...... Frosty, if i may follow your lead... what are you smoking Tom? Total loss is NOT what helped me win a race.... the tiny HP advantage i get is lost with my noob riding skills and slow exit speed. I won because you started at the back (and the race was shortened to 4 laps) and the 1100cc monster didnt go out cos it was raining and i am stupid enough to be able to ride at 90% of my pace in the rain. That said... total loss is an advantage... but very small in my noob rider hands, i ride a smart race, not a fast race.
next thing...with my limited knowledge... i didnt know VFR's work on ram air considering the way the airbox and carbs are configured??? (infact i think stock VFR's came out with a flap blocking air to the airbox thing under the tank)...... mine had no filter and ran like shit when i first got it cos the air flow was too free and hard(?) into the airbox/carbs, i had to put a filter and stuff back in..... can someone help me out with the tech speak for this stuff?

the time im reffering to was on the second race last lap. where i passed you on the last corner but ur bike just had that little bit more and you won by like 0.011 of a sec or sumpthing ( that is where total loss comes in handy) and as for your rideing your not too bad your really smooth and probably a lot more sencible than i

still nothing to do with total loss....

Westie, I have been raceing a stock ZXR 400 1989 model for the last 5 years, Frosty and i have had some good races together when he had his, listen to what he is saying.
Do the small mods first and until you can ride the wheels off the thing (flat out everywhere)dont spend money on high cost performance bits.
I went down that road, spent a lot of money for nothing, dynos jeting etc for very little gain, put the bike back to stock more relieable, i race it park it and race it, change oil and filters once a season and a set of tyres and thats it,
as someone has already said get out on the track and learn the bike, and your skills against other riders.
I have won races on it, it is still reasonably competitive without spending a lot on it,and most of all i have one hell of a lot of FUN on it, thats the important bit.
Cheers bud and good luck:rockon:

Sure thing rustys I was over there tonight he is a good fella definately.
I will take all advice given. Really keen to do with this bike what I meant to do with the last one. Once the front end is sorted and I have a fairing then I'll be there at the track.
Can you tell me what club to join if any and when or where to check out the racetrack times/events?

Hey Westie,
Have you got a full workshop manual (H model base manaul and L Supplement)? If not download one from www.zxrworld.co.uk
As for clubs to join. Why don't you tag along with a few of the people that have replied on this thread, like frosty or nicksta and visit the Auckland club. You'll meet good people who will be happy to give you advice in F3

I don't really have too much left as this bike consumed most. Just some random things and a few electrical bits that I did not trust. More than welcome to ask and if I dont have anything someone else on kb might.
