Dunno if this has been talked about before - but why do Harley riders not wave? I must admit round town I don't always wave but on the open road I do - but don't bother with Harleys anymore. I have done a long ride on a Harley once and forgot what I was on and waved away - noboady expects it so I had a good laugh as I watched them try to react and wave back as they rode by!......anyway harley riders out there - whats the go? :spudwave: Is it because they paid twice as much for a bike with half the power and a 10th of the handling of any other bike? :killingme I guess I would be pissed off too if I realised a GSXR1000 wasn't $75,000 after paying $40,000 for a Fatboy......must stop. Sorry Harelys are cool enough. Chicks LOVE them. Thats enough of a reason. By why no wave?

On my last coupla rides, almost everyone waved, except a couple on a V-Rod, and another pair on a Buell.
I guess it's because they're doing the macho HD rider thing? I dunno; but it's good having Mrs FS on the back waving, as it seems to get more waves than just me giving a nod or whatever.
Try this - if you see an HD coming, wave really enthusiastically, like a complete loon.:spudwave: :spudwave:

Definatly - there have been a few threads on this,I've mentioned that we are all looking for bikes similar to what we ride, kinda natural - I ride dirt bikes...the sports bike riders must think I'm a farmer out to pick up some stock,I'm lucky if they even notice I'm there..I gotta laugh whenever this subject comes up,but I guess it's hard to see it from a different point of veiw....

Is it Ok that I don't wave while I'm riding? I'm still learning, and taking my hands off the bars is a little worrying (course this is mainly around town!)... I do do the "finger lift" and nod thing though...

YoYeah, nodding's good. And we'd be a bit concerned if you were doing vigorous two-handed waves at this stage of the game. And be careful about which fingers you lift, particularly around those staunch cruiser guys.
BTW - this business of some bike riders refusing to wave is a universal thing. Some unspoken law, perhaps.:headbang:

Yo
Riding an SR you should not have a problem with riding one handed, even around town. Its just a confidence thing. Ever done one of those bike skills riding courses, they are great for gaining confidence in your ability and your bike. As a new rider years ago I had to ride from Devonport to Manukau every Saturday to attend the course. Once the course had finished I had my full a bit different today. Just like waving.... The exception was not to wave, like in a corner trying just to hang on. Now it seems to be the rule not to wave ..... but old habits die hard and I still find myself waving yes even to the harley boys of whom I have had a few waves back in the past.
be true to yourself and wave always, they are like smiles you may well get one back.

Yeah, well this goes both ways, I waved to a few Sportbike Owners while out on my Harley with no response.Probably coz they were in a state of shock, nevermind if you pass me going the other way you'll get a wave from me regardless of whether I'm on the Harley or my ZX7R.

I'm with you. I wave at almost everyone when I'm riding, regardless of what I'm riding. Mostly because I know a hell of a lot of riders in the area and cant be arsed with someone getting miffed that I didn't wave.
Strange lot us sports bike riders though, alot of Harley customers complain of just what youre saying from the other side of the coin.

I wave like a demented Emporer Penguin at every bike I see. Including scooters. I nod when I'm commuting, because it requires a lot more concentration and effort to avoid becoming a statistic.
Don't care if you don't wave back, because I'm having fun anyway. I'll never forget the look (open face helmets) I got from a bunch retro/restored Brit bike riders on the Rimutakas when I waved at a considerable angle of dangle, while riding the old CBR with bits of bodywork flapping about. I think a couple of them stopped to see if the looney fell off. They didn't wave though.

I've come to the conclusion that it's not the bike that they ride that makes them a stuck up prat that won't wave - some riders just don't. Mind you a point someone else made was that they may (in some situations) not have seen you or there may be another genuine reason. I've had Harley riders and Sports bike riders snob me but I've also had both wave.
Coming back from the Sprints on Sunday more riders didn't wave or nod than did! I kinda thought that in that sorta instance ie. making your way to or from a bike event, the friendly waves would come thick and fast.
Oh well. :whocares: I mostly nod myself but I don't usually nod at scooters - dunno why. :o

they risk losing control. Most of them cant ride for shit - fast on flat straight - crawl round corners. Lots of noise - look at me syndrome .
You must understand this is not all but most.
And the bunny owns 2 HD - and she will wave - or slap whip as she goes past.

I wave some times,some times I don't.
I've always been the same no matter what I was riding.
If I don't get a reply to a wave,I don't care, maybe the other rider was just not looking,in a world of their own, doing what ever other riders do,who knows? who cares?? I certainly don't.
What's more,I don't label them a prat, because that would say more about me than anything else.
I know several BMW riders that suck up big time when there's something in it for them but meet them at something like the Westpac toy run and they ignore everybody that's not in their prissy little club.
These guys who all come from AK have done wonders for my opinion of BMW riders in general
These guys are assholes, they are not typical BMW riders because I know a few others that don't carry on like this.
The same applys to HD riders, you just get the assholes and they colour your opinion.
Now us XS riders, when we come across each other we don't wave,we stop.
Some times we are already stopped

I wave at all bikes, if your on a bike (whatever it is) theres something right with you. If you dont wave back maybe you didnt see me or didnt think to respond in time or your having a shite day and somethings on your mind.
What time were you going thru the gorge nc30 ? I mentioned on another thread that I saw 3 400's (i think) going hell for leather along some straights near there.
With a HP about 1 k up the road. Actually noticed a few cages were flashing thier lights to let me know. Probably bike riders doing the same thing i do when im in the car.
wave and if they dont wave back do you really care ? your on a bike having a bloody good time :D reminds me of a toast we used to use in the russel pub

Ummmmm, heard of a little thing called "Supply V's Demand"?
They're that expensive because they can be.
A guy turned up today to pick up his new Harley. Never owned a road bike before, just wanted a Harley.
Four of his mates came down on their Harleys to go for a ride with their friend on his new bike. When I asked "Why the choice of bike?" for his first road bike, he said he was just amazed by the social scene and wanted to be part of it.

Hmmm about 6 months ago I met an ex HD rider (was going to buy a black Trumpy speed triple due to peer pressure from his mates), whos' eletronic ignition unit went tits up on a trip down south, reckoned big blocks where the way to go. Mentioned something about 1200s where for pussies.
:thud:
He must be talking about Datsun 1200's, ask him how many 1200 'S' Sporties he has whipped, not many I bet - unless he has spent the equivalent of half the price of one getting his 'big-block' up to speed, - guys who reckon big block H-D's are the way to go have (a) too much money or (2) too much 'dream-time' :ride:
