Well, finally gotten out of discombobulated state after I went to give blood today! First time ever.

I was a bit  when I approached the thumb-jab room and memories of my stay in hospital with it's vampiric nurses brought up old fears.

Nothing could be further from the truth! The thumb-jab was painless and quick and the actual extraction of 470 points of aqua vitae sanguine was as easy as squeezing the rubber ball!

Donor and I were chatting free and easy as you like in the relaxing couches as the merry liquid wound down into the collection bag (mmm..nice and warm is blood at body temp.)

And at the end, we heartily scoffed raisin pasties, shrewsberry cookies, tim tams and other biscuity delights - all quaffed down with copius quantities of R...A..R..O... Raro!

Lovely staff made sure we weren't about to faint from loss of blood and as we left, we chortled at the sight of try-hard boi-racer doing burn-out in a wash n'pay!

So.... go and sign up and donate some time and blood for a good cause!

Wouldnt mind donating blood sometime, do they tell you what blood type you are when they do the test? Because I still have no idea what blood type I am. Im up for anything as long as theres some biscuits involved.

They won't let me or the missus donate blood since there were 157 YES FOLKS 157 cases of vCJD by 2004 (Gasp) Out of a population of 60,000,000 that's ....that's....not exactly a fucken epidemic.

However the NZ Blood service would rather let a 20 year old bloke die on the operating table than take a 157/60,000,000 chance of his contracting CJD in later life.

Heigh ho. Rant over.

I guess I should have asked those questions! But I was so busy stuffing my gob with free biccies I plumb fergot!

Donor? You there Donor? Or did you light up a ciggie so you could get an increased hit of nicotine in your blood stream due to less volume of blood!

Donor would know. He knows all sort of scary but fascinating stuff connected with bits being in and outside of bodies!

The point is, it's yer Scottish blood they take umbrage with! The fear of a person waking up and suddenly taking on an accent and querying the medical charges is always to be considered, first and foremost! :oi-grr:

Most centres have late nights on Tuesday and Thursdays. I did it this evening with Donor driving me there as I found six shades of yellow on my back and started clucking... got there at 7.40pm...dagnabbit! Had to go through with it! :pinch:

Opens till 8pm on those days!

Donating blood is good for guys to get rid of iron. the way i see it if you would accept it in a time of need then you should be prepared to donate.

knock back a pint afterwards waheeeey

And make sure you watch Blade before you go, then wonder where the blood really does go to...... muhahahahahahaha :killingme

Yup. I used to give blood regularly until they changed the rules. Believe about half the population is deemed potentially "unclean" and they struggle to keep a good supply.

Probably a good thing, I used to pass out every time :yawn::zzzz:
Got told more than once not to bother comming back but I figured it was a minor inconvenience compared to being dead from lack of blood.

Would do if they'd let me, but I'm barred under their current rules cos of the mad cow risk :wacko::Pokey:

In my case they're probably right.....

(I very clearly remember the time it all came out in the open, the price of beef plummeted. So what did we do? Went out and stocked up the freezer of course...! LOL)

Yep, it sucks that a large number of our fine population can't donate...

But there are heaps of us who can - unfortunately very few do :(

I've been a Donor for 18 years, I started giving blood when I was 16 as it was blood transfusions that saved my fathers life when he was 3 (train vs leg, train won!) so I am paying back the best way I know how.

A recent example of why we need more blood donors was highlighted last week, when a woman was seriously injured by a car.

She was taken to hospital, and before they even got her onto an operating theater table, she was receiving her 23rd unit of blood.

Now, each donor only gives every 3-4 months, so that one person is a HUGE tax on available stocks. And that's before we factor in the variable blood types.

So if you're eligible to donate, do so. You never know where it's going to end up, or worse still when you might be on the receiving end. (And if you go toward the end of the day, they'll usually encourage you to polish off the remaining biscuits and juice stocks... muhahaha!)

Perhaps next time I go, we can make it a KB blood drive! Manukau has 2 late nights, open til 8pm.

I do it, only because I am an O type and it can be used universally so I know it will be used.

I used to be a regular donor. Lived opposite the old blood centre when it was in Grafton. As a poor student I discovered the free juice and bikkies and they became a major part of my diet!

My blood's 'A' type so it's most useful as plasma to be processed into Factor XIII for use by haemophiliacs. Made me feel pretty useful that I could do something to help those guys. The blood centre used to remove my whole blood, centrifuge it on the spot, return all the good cells to me and just use the plasma! Great! Meant I could go there every 4 weeks for my sugar fix!

Then one day I got cancer. Go away they said! :oi-grr: Ever since then I've had to buy my own juice and bikkies.

McJim, I reckon you and I should sit outside the window and get the others to pass treats out to us. Or borrow their bikes while they're distracted.

Approaching my 30th donation...should be a lot more but I was a little slack when younger, still making up for it now. It's nice to be in demand too (o-).

Is a good thing to be doing.

No, unfortunately not. I used to work with a guy who did and he found it a bit of curse. I just a phone every three months for whole blood.

Until two years ago I was a regular at the Riccarton Road blood bank, I was asked to go Mondays and all my blood (O-) was used for baby packs, sometimes I'd be asked to hold off donating and be on standby over Christmas or be rung and asked to come in early

Due to a change in circumstances I haven't been able to donate for nearly two years, but hopefully can start again in a couple of months,

I had been going on a semi regular basis since I was 16 (which is a long time ago)

I've only got into donating in the past couple of years through work. Every three months the Blood Bus collects us from work and then we donate and scoff the Brumbys that they have on Tuesdays

I have no sentimental reason for donating other than wanting to do a good deed. Plus, I want to increase the chances of blood being available should I ever need it.

Same problem here. Lived too long in the UK.

I've been on the receiving end a few times but when trying to give back they said no.

If I had of lived in France where the incedents of Mad Cow and CJD are higher than the UK but not as viual there would have been no problem.

Oh well.
