Well, how about the opposite side of the fence? Employers lying about the job position that you are applying for?

It might take you two years to figure out that "Exciting opportunity in the financial services" means "Soul destroying admin shit".

"Challenging Role" means "Impossible work load aimed at causing your imminent mental breakdown".

"Flexi-time" means "You work when we fucking tell you to work fuckface!".

"Competitive industry standard wage" means "You're a monkey, here are some peanuts, DANCE MONKEY, DANCE".

"Working in a close team" means "Complete cunt of a manager telling you 8 hours a day that your work is not good enough, you will need to work late, and that I own you man-bitch".

I did have one job where I was sold what was basically a marketing executive / business analyst role, then when I turned up I was doing front-line support!
There was also a Tui's moment; I took a $7k pay cut to take the job, and was told, "You should be back up to your current salary in two years".

"is a challenging student" = a right little shite
"presenting a range of teaching strategies" = sit down, shut up, get on with your work
"home learning is a required part of a learner's development" = to keep parents satisfied their little sproglings aren't bothering them
"needs to turn his/her attitude around" = future P-head in the making
"lacks initiative and focus" = lazy bugger who needs a swift kick up the backside
"is distracted in class" = probably a candidate for Ritalin
"distracts others" = needs to be in lock-down, solitary confinement
"pleasant and co-operative" = your wallflower who is run rough-shod over by the ADHDs in the class
"does not bring equipment to class" = sold stuff off for P
"needs to engage with their learning" = head needs to be banged with the textbook
"disappointing results" = we need streetsweepers anyway

Uh... that was a while ago now (94-96). I've had a few jobs since then (but I'm probably not earning as much in real terms as I was back in 94).
Fortunately, the vifferbabe earns twice as much as me (and does more than twice as much work....)

OK - so you found out things aren't what they were meant to be. You're now in a position to ask for what you want (while getting paid) or seeking another job (while enjoying security of income).

It's a lot better than having no job, and needing one PRONTO to pay the bills... meaning you have to seriously consider taking a pay cut, worse job, career hit etc.

Look around, find a job that you dream of, get your CV in order and go door knocking. You have time on your side.

I've discovered that in a scientific research institute there appears to be no career path at all for support staff (Electronics Tech)...whats more, my long term objective for the last 3 years has been to become a Senoir Tech. Seems that everyone except me is a Senoir Tech and while theres only one Std Tech (me) theres a shit show of a chance I'll be a Senior. Lame. Whats more my obj for this year set in my very recent performance review was to become proficient in a new technology (Zigbee)... but thats been deemed 'non-standard' and now I'm becoming profiencient in Bluetooth, which I already have become so in the last year anyway. So I already achieved this years obj, last year! :niceone: ...wonder if that means I get a pay increase for over performance?

Thanks for the thread! ...got that off my chest now. Think I might look for a junior web dev/Java job and earn another $10K starting salary.

I don't really care what I'm paid: given how slack I am at the moment (I've spent all week just browsing the Interdweeb) and how I'm sometimes semi-functional at best, pay isn't an issue. I like where I'm working (notwithstanding having insufficient work to do / no challenge), and at least they know I'm mental. I could easily earn two or three times as much, but dunno if I could stand the stress (although being bored is almost as stressful for someone who likes being busy).

Everyone has the obligation to be promoted to their level of incompetence, then settle for the demotion that plops them at the pinnacle of their potential.

Oh I don't know...this is year 4 for me in NZ, and every year since moving here I've taken a pay cut (govt adviser to independent consultant to working in the commercial sector), and I'm enjoying myself more and more as a result.

I've a second interview next week with a local company which, if successful, would mean I'd earn tens of Ks less PA in this new role than I currently earn. And I'm quite looking forward to the challenge. Apart from the fact it means managing people again.

My advice - if you can live on what you currently earn, and are happy, then stay where you are. Chasing the $ is never a good move IMO. People get paid more for certain jobs for a reason, and that reason is often aggro/tedium/stress/frustration wrapped up in a payslip.

I stepped out of 5 years of Logistics Management, to go "retail", and I freaking love it, and I think I must be the most shockingly overpaid customer services monkey in all of Nelson, but my company loves me, and the feeling is reciprocal.

I am approaching year 5 with this company, and can see 5 more coming easily.

I once took a temp job which advertised "A dynamic position concerning distribution of stock and general product management, working with a great bunch of people" or something to that effect. Impressed, I applied immediately.
Turns out I was picking and packing for 40 hours a week. The people were great but I was only let of of the store room at lunch time to interact with them. I spent an entire summer holiday in that place. :(
