The season approaches when hobby bikers across the land will be polishing up their prized possessions in readiness to take to the wilder highways of Britain.


This year, the early mild weather has encouraged motorcyclists, eager to invoke the spirit of Peter Fonda, to saddle up. The result is that we have already had to deal with three bike crashes involving very serious injury. On average there are 9 motorcycle deaths a year in north Wales alone. This is in addition to the many collisions that result in life changing consequences for riders. Motorcyclists are thirty times more likely to receive fatal or serious injuries than other road users.


The single, but tragic, fatality on our rail network over the weekend has rightly provoked a wave of concern over maintenance standards on a vital transport network with a predominantly excellent safety record. Yet the carnage associated with what is essentially a recreational vehicle goes on, year after year. Despite strenuous efforts by the Department for Transport, the Motor Cycle Industry Association and other responsible bodies to encourage safer riding, too many heroes (almost all are men) still fail or choose to ignore the advice. Anyone daring to raise the issue with these fanatics and self-interest groups is likely to be met by an avalanche of abuse.


Most motor bike collisions in rural areas involve rider error; often poor technique or risk taking. The desire to ride machines capable of high speed on twisty country roads may be attractive to some, but is unacceptable when it develops into a selfish and dangerous activity.


North Wales Police has an obligation to reduce road casualties. Our strategy includes education, engagement, engineering and enforcement. This year we will continue our investment in education by supporting the excellent BikeSafe initiative. (For further information please visit www.bikesafe.co.uk .) This scheme is run by people who love their biking, but who also know how to ride well and safely. We hope it works, as training definitely helps those who are willing to accept the advice. However, we cannot and will not tolerate those who abuse our road network, and will take whatever action is justified and necessary to deal with them. "

Mr Brunstrom was a very silly boy and used pictures of a decapitated biker in an anti-bike campaign without permission from the biker's family.

The biker in question had been incredibly stupid, however the permission issue just about sunk Mr Brunstrom's career.

What he writes makes sense and appears to be sensible. In reality his delivery is incredibly nasty, and he really would like to shoot all motorcyclists on sight.

these are just two examples of how out of date and out of touch this man is!

also, this is the man that paraded on national tv, pictures of two motocyclists that had been be-headed in an accident, showing their faces and everything less than a month after they had died and didnt even bother to tell their families let alone ask their permission!

go onto any uk based motorcycle website and ask about richard brunstrom and see what happens! you will be met with vitriolic abuse and hatred towards this man!

he is an out of touch and dangerous man who should not be in the police force!

The UK lot have a much better voice in responding to political pressure than we do here, we should follow the example really, might get a few things done. BRONZ should become a lobby group with teeth and claws, of course we would all need to support it.

the problem is is he sees all bikers as the same (like peter fonda ffs)!
he wants a 40 mph blanket speed for the entire north wales, he even tried to ban bikes from the entire north wales on a weekend ffs. the man is insane

Richard Brunstrom has been caught out repeatedly setting policy that penalises all motorcyclists up to and including compulsory stops for all motorcycles and impounding and destruction of bikes. While what he writes looks sensible, his attitude in real life is completely different and the Deputy Chief Constable for the UK who is in charge of all road safety issues with a special focus on motorcycles is not happy with the number of problems Brunstrom has caused.

As I said, he looks sensible. In reality he is the sort of person who opens door on filtering motorcyclists and will ignore an accident involving an injured motorcyclist.

He has a mental problem, he is not a benign critic of motorcycling.

The beheaded head was close to the mark if he did not inform the family, however, I can see where he was coming from and in principle I agree with this type of approach and I am sure that the parents of that guy.....despite being upset at the time.......would agree if it sends out a message to other Son's and Daughters.

oh him! that nutter, sorry my bad, I didn't realise it was the same guy. The above comments are rather mild then, still don't have a problem with those ones, but his other idea's are well off the mark.
I must admit though, the stunt with using a helicopter to catch 2 guys on the A55 was pretty funny, they stopped for gas and the chopper landed in the carpark and arrested them, had been following them for an hour at high speed apparently.

In my time in UK investigating accidents I have seen some horror pictures.......one example was a car with youths which rolled......2 dead.....the photo showed pools of blood on the rear parcel shelf where the rear passengers had impacted with the rear screen.......or a car that went off road into a wood at the side of the road......the whole side of the car was literally peeled away.................the guy died......

I have riden with 60+ year olds on Busa's & ZX14's. You will find most of the incidents you are talking about happen on Hardleys etc.

A handful of adults dying on motorbikes every weekend is neither here nor there in the grand scheme of things. THOUSANDS of people of all ages top themselves in the UK every year. NOTHING is done about that, or the causes of it. The reasons bikes are clamped down on are money and control. There's money in fines and whatnot. People with bikes tend to have more than the average disposable income, and the gubbinmint is after its share.
