Hey guys and girls.

Got a small request.

I have a workmate and fellow firefighter in waikato hospital fighting off an aggressive cancer.

He`s from Waihi and a top bloke...sad thing is hes only 26 yrs old.

Thursday morning was the start of all the real pain as they injected what was described to me as a weed killer, doctors said that if this didnt kill him in the next 24 hours then theres a chance that the cancer will start reversing at the same rate it was growing, which was doubling in size every 24-36 hours.
I was then told by one of the officers from his brigade , who also works with me that if he survived the weed killer then he had a 5% chance of survivng the next 3 days, hes got a lot going for him in that hes a big guy and hes young with a stubborness to boot.

Guess what I`m after is your thoughts and prayers to reach him even tho you don`t know him , or me for that matter it would be good to get lots of people to help him in his fight , with thoughts and prayers.

Cheers RT527.

Thanks...What makes this one harder is that Being a Volunteer Firefighter he has rather a larger extended family.

Shit, couldn't have happened to a better person. I'm applying to join the volunteer firefighters, as I've always admired the selflessness of it.

Thoughts are with him.

actually Mrs K youve hit on something there.

Why do you never actually look deeply at someone until they are sick or dead.....he was just another workmate an firefighter and yes he is an awesome guy...big...friendly do anything for anyone...but you really dont see someone properly like that until they are sick or wounded(if ya`s know what I mean).

Everyone should take stock of their friendships and loved ones least something happens to them.

Haven`t heard how he is, no news is good at the moment ...I hope.

It's sad isn't it. I guess it's the old "you don't know what you have until it's gone", goes for people you know and/or love and your own health too, you don't appreciate until it's gone. Easy to forget these things in our busy lives that so often revolve around ourselves. Makes you think doesn't it, just how fragile and precious life is.

I'm not big on praying, but I'll tell you what - if anyone can survive a cancer treatment it's a 26 year old firefighter. So, my hopes are with him - good luck to the guy.

Take it from me,if he's a pig headed strong willed guy HE WILL beat it,26 is too fucken young agreed,I thought 41 was too, then this disease knows no boundary,my daughter had a friend with cancer she went to her funeral, they were both 14-15 at time, good friends, then daughter finds she needs screening for cancer as she has my gene, and if not screened will develop cancer, pretty hard shit for a kid to comprehend so young.

Wishing all strength and power to your mate and his family and colleagues, having once been in the family of firefighters myself I can empathise.
Hope he recovers fast.

Our thoughts are with your fellow firefighter rt527, and his family and friends. Its a trying time for all involved, but as long as He remains positive there is hope, My wife went through two attacks of cancer approx 9 years apart, She always remained positive, refused to surrender and nearly 20 After the first one She is still with us.. we live one day at a time and try to appreciate every special moment.

My brother-in-law and nephew are both firefighters and they are damned decent blokes too - seems to be a trend.

Positive thoughts are on their way, here's hoping he recovers and goes on to lead a long and happy life.

Just heard this morning that a guy we know has passed away - he wasn't old enough either, very sad.

Sorry guys its been a bit busy at work.

Well Dave is still with us and hope of a full recovery is there , but having said that this week has been not that good, he has had some real strong Chemo ...almost 5 times the normal dose( so I`ve been told) and I still cant go see him as I have a bad cold, and an eye infection ...Trivial compared to what he`s fighting, but it could kill him if i do.
Dave has had a steady stream of visitors form paid firefighter staff from hamilton to many of my fellow workmates, police and ambulance officers etc etc.
He is a stubborn pigheaded guy and I believe he can fight this.
when he is getting these massive chemo doses the doctors say he has a 5% chance of survival,( again only what I`ve heard back from family and friends so dont quite know what to think yet).

Any doctors out there that could elaborate further would be helpful.

Cheers for all your support

RT527.

Well that's still relatively good news, having some hope is still better than none, Dave certainly sounds like a fighter. Good on him!

5% chance is better than none at all...

And he's pigheaded...trust me, it helps! The desire to survive this will carry him a long way into fighting this off and recovering!

Go Dave...

Just a bummer you have to stay away, immune is non existant so as you say a cold could be dangerous to him, stupid really when you think of whats going in him, pigheadedness rules from experience I know.

Heard today that Hes doing as well as can be expected.

The tumour has stopped growing and the cancer is now getting into his blood , which apparently is a real good thing.

They hope in the next few days that it will start to reverse in size, Heres hoping.
