View Full Version : Adventure riding to rallies

Thought it might be useful to have a thread in here with links to upcoming rallies that someone has a cunning Adventure riding plan for.

Ist good rally of the season is th Pissed Penguin at Kaka Point on the coast out from Balclutha. We're planning a gravel road blast from my place leaving around 9am on the Sat morning (15th Sept). The rest of the info is in this thread

http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=50548&page=15

I can provide a sleeping spot for a few if that works in with your travels - PM me nearer the time.

The Pissed Penguin thread seems to have turned to shit thanks to a couple of CHCH members - one of whom used to be part of the Adv Riding fratenity but has not very Sensibly sold his soul to some Italian bit with 2 big pots!!! - now let me guess I wonder who that could be????

Anyway its a bit full of shit for organising anything.
As stated earlier I have a gravel ride planned for the Sat morning from my place down to the Rally site, leaving here about 9am
So far I have keen interest or commitment from Jantar, Oldrider, TimG, XF650, RedKL650, MBazza, and (sorry mate) a new member from ChCh direction who rides a BMW and who's handle just escapes me at the moment (since made himself known again - be good to meet you Shrek Lone rider) and possibly a Dunedin mate who is thinking of getting an adventure bike as well.
Anyone else interested?
The rally was a really good one last year and they have it well set up to cope with most things the climate can do - the band and dancing area plus bar and some food stalls are all under one marquee complex and outside this area are several bonfires in big drums.
Its right on the coast so you can get a bit of coastal shit come in at night but the set up they have stops that being a problem.
The group ride out is quite good fun - leaves the site at around 1pm and last time visited a couple of pubs and the Garvan boutique restaurant. The ride out to the Nugget POint lighthouse is an absolute must if you've never been there (take binoculars - the walking track is high above the surf and theres heaps of seals breed in the rocks below you).
I'll have a few spare beds to throw a sleeping bag on for Friday night, although some spots have been reserved already. PM me if interested.
Its a 45-55 minute ride from Dunedin to here for anyone staying there, or about 15min from Milton if you use the Backpackers down there

My adventure began this afternoon. I had to tell Stromfrau that we couldn't go to the Ballet on Sept 15th because it clashed with the rally. :dodge:

So did the "we" become two lots of "I"s - or are you both rallying? We could always arrange a spot on the dance floor for You and Stromfrau to do a bit of Swan Lake whilst wearing full leathers???? - or would that result in a rendition of "the Nut Cracker Suite"?

It certainly would. :crybaby:

I shall be riding to the rally alone. :ride:

Yes but it is not much difference in distance, I went that way (not into Waitahuna) last year to the P Penguin. John.

The only route I can find on Google maps is to take Mitchell's Flat road to Waitahuna, then Waitahuna Valley Road to Round Hill. Although it doesn't go through Waitahuna, the turnoff is only 1 km short. I believe there may be a forestry road that goes directly to Round Hill from Mahinerangi.

Yes but some maps don't show the link up to Mahinerangi!

You come up from the bridge over the lake (heading South) turn right then left. It's a good road. John.

That is the Mitchell's Flat route. I already know that one, so unless RM can come up with some other interesting way, that is probably what it will have to be. Back in the days when I lived at Waipori Falls (28 years ago) I knew of a track that went from Mahinerangi up to Waipori Station, and from there you could look down on Round Hill. Now with all the forestry in the area I thought that there was a new forestry road down to the Round hill area.

My son and daughter in law, used to live in the house on the left as you climb away from Lake Mahinerangi bridge, so used to know my way about there but get a bit confused now that the trees have grown and time has passed..

So far, I intend to ride down to the PP via Dansey Pass, Middlemarch, Lee Flat, Mahinerangi, Waitahuna Gully road to Brucie's place.

I really enjoyed that ride last year, it has such a lot of variety! John.

I think youre on the right track there J - although I don't know the road names, I just drive there.
As you come from mahingerangi towards Waitahuna you come to a T intersection about 3-4 km before Waitahuna - if you turn right you'll go onto the seal and on to Waitahuna. Turn left and come up the Waitahuna Gully road. Eventually it will meet Round Hill Rd, turn left and I'm about 300m on the right.
(Alternatively just follow Oldrider)
I was intending going back out that way on Sat morning as part of my gravel route to the PP (but only as far as Waitahuna.) Theres no forestry roads that I know of that would link in for that bit - there are forestry roads up on the Waitahuna Heights but theres also a few locked gates which we ride round on the dirt bikes but the Adv Bikes are a bike heavy for what we do.

Thanks RM, That is the route I intended when I suggested to Shrek Lone Rider that we meet at this end of Danseys and ride back country to your place, though in the back of my mind I was sure that there was a forestry route I hadn't ridden before.

Although, I could lead them down the Waipori Gorge to Berwick, then take some back roads (is it Perry Road?) to the Manuka Gorge, and come into your place from the opposite direction. :innocent:

Not long to go now.
If the waether was really lousy on the Friday then over the tops via Mahingerangi won't be pleasant so keep the option of going down through the Waipori Valley. Once you get back onto the highway you could go out to Taieiri Mouth from Waihola (still gravel but going to be sealed) and then travel along the coast and back in at Milton and on up to here.
Lots of options depending on time and weather

Nothing to do with the PP but I had an impromptu go at Adventure riding to a rally on the way to the Cold Kiwi.

Hi everybody ( Bruce especially )

I'm afraid over the last few days I've managed to inherit a dose of this nasty flu  doing the rounds and although I'm now full of chemicals and feeling a lot better, the last thing I want to do is spread this around the team tomorrow night. :grouphug:

While I'm on the bike with the bugs trapped inside my helmet :scooter:you're all safe so depending on how knackered I am early that morning, I may yet still head down very early and catch you lot for the Saturday morning sojourn starting at Bruces, but I'll ive timg a buzz on the batfone Friday evening to confirm

Cheers, Stu :scooter:

That doesn't sound too healthy Stu - hope it comes right quickly but there are some nasty ones doing the rounds at the moment and you do need to look after yourself.

Well the large piece of dead pig is thawing out ready to be BBQ'd tomorrow so I'm partly ready and I'm looking forward to seeing you all here. Great to talk to Oldrider tonight and hear he's coming, and Delphinus will come out from Dunedin for Frid night here as well.

Ride safe - the weather looks like its going to be our friend

I don't know about you Bruce, but people who insist on going to work / events etc and end up giving the flu :sick:to everyone else really piss me off:angry:, so I'd rather not be one of those people:nono:. Hell, have you seen some of those adventure bikers when they're angry :bash: Me neither, but the thought of being dragged to death behind a DR over the Danseys is somehow reminiscent of the old days :spanking:when they used to draw and quarter people :gob:

Hope all goes well for tomorrow night, and you may still see me for the Saturday ride yet. :whocares:
