View Full Version : jrandom's bionic thumb - not for the squeamish!

Monday afternoon rolled around, and it was time to undergo a few repairs following last week's bin.
Being the curious bastard that I am, I smuggled a digital camera into the operating theatre and talked the surgical team into recording my smashed-up digit in all its flayed-open glory, before and after being screwed full of titanium.
They knocked me out with a grin on my face, and I woke up with the camera tucked into the front pocket of my hospital gown. Results attached.
My thanks to the Counties Manukau DHB plastic surgery team - you guys rock!
Try not to highside, boys and girls - it'll fuck you up.
The pictures almost make it worthwhile, though...

Asian dudes have long fingernails to show that they don't do manual labour.
(Apparently, they also work great for arse-scratching and as coke spoons.)

Welcome to the fucked up thumb club... Mines been terrifing small children for decades. Mine was a lowside on unseen gravel in the middle of the night (1955 BSA 6V electrics don't throw great gobs of white light) and I also cut all the tendons in the hand. Mine looked a bit like that just after the accident and was pumpin' the red juice summit fierce...

I'd be a bit worried about what they'd have to do to get a good camera angle...

I'm impressed. You did a very thorough and competent job on that bone. Just wanted a bit of sympathy and attention, did we? :innocent:
I like the camera in the operation scenario. I'll try that for my next one!

I would have loved to see photos of my heart bypass after reading about the complexities while the surgeon was so blase (sp ? ). Even a photo of all the tubes etc after the op would have been cool. I don't remember any of that, isn't morphine wonderful ?

LOL... Jesus Dan, I'm impressed mate. You not only stuff yourself up - you want a measure of exactly how stuffed up you are!
Impressive stuff. And now - to rub it in - some thumbs that work properly...
:niceone: :niceone: :niceone: :niceone: :niceone:
Interesting - they fixed you up with a bathplug chain?
I've never figured out how they manage to cut you open like that without blood going everywhere.
It looks like a horrible job though - patching all the bits back together with no real option of ordering spare parts to replace the worse ones, and without being able to pull bits out and stick them on the bench or in the vice while you work on them. At least the body does a large chunk of its own repairs.

That'd be totally awesome, but I strongly suspect that the calendar's designers won't want to raise an uproar by turning the stomachs of a large portion of their target audience...
I'll send one through, though. You never know. Heh.

"This'll screw up the yanks and their metal detectors...."
Good idea, except metal detectors are skewed towards ferrous metals. My watch is mostly titanium, and doesn't register at all, whereas one of my belt buckles has a far smaller amount of metal in it and sets the detector off easily.
Obviously, terrorists use only primitive weapons...
Seriously, the 'security measures' at airports are designed more to reassure passengers that air travel is safe than to make it safe. A non-amateur terrorist with a few clues could easily circumvent the measures in place.
I have a sneaking suspicion that some of the latest stuff being promulgated is the airlines moving to the point where carry-on luggage is eliminated, and (ultimately) luggage will be charges as freight (i.e., per kilogram). With the rising fuel costs, airlines are becoming very aware that they're carrying an awful lot of passengers' crap that they're not getting revenue for.
Sorry - WAY off topic. My bad...
Anyway Dr. Dan - hope your thumb heals well. If you try anything like this again, we'll kick your arse (or hire someone to do it...)

What really disturbs me about this thread is that I thought I was immune to gross stuff on the internet.. Rotten.com? read it while I'm eating breakfast.. I've seen the beheading videos, seen dismembered corpses, seen people shot in the head with a .50, seen the video showing a cat going from alive to served on a plate.. None of it ever really phased me..
These pics however made me slightly squeamish.. I guess its the whole "it could happen to me" thing.
