FROSTY
31st July 2007, 23:30
Thought I'd post here a bit of an update on whats happening here in Frosty land.
Back on may 20th I had a crash at Taupo busting my wrist and banging my Helmet on the ground pretty hard.
It turns out that Ive had a nasty concussion. Its been compounded by smacking my head down pretty hard 12 months before -HMM at the same place.
Net result is the ol brain ain't working too well. Its like damageing any other part of the body. Hit it hard enough often enough somethings gonna break. Reality for me is that even a small bang could cause much worse concequences than for someone without the injury.
Hardest decision I've had to make in my life was a voluntary 12-24 month break from racing. The possible concequences of the other option I don't wanna even concider.
Ive got two lil guys that want dad to come home every night and tuck em in bed.
Its a matter of crossing each hurdle as I get to it.
Doing a full days work isn't an option without a nanna nap middle of the day. I'm getting there slowly and as Arnie said --" ILL BE BACK"
please no -feeling sorry for me-Theres shit loads of people a heckof a lot worse off

Cripes Frosty, good to hear you've identified the problem - so I guess you are working on the solution now. Take it easy (if you can) and rest that noggin of yours till its hunky-dory! :sweatdrop
And oh yeah, good on ya for helping out that new rider!

Have you been cleared by a Doctor endorsed by MNZ to race again?
So he can bang it a third time? You only get so many 'walk away' passes I'd say.

It is a good decision Frosty .. I know what Speedie is talking about ... and I think you need to check that avenue as well ... seeing about getting clearence is different from taking a break ... just becauase you get clearance does not mean you have to ride ...

Sounds like the last year or so may have been really frustrating for you while you were working out what the hell was going on! I'm glad you've got some answers.
I bet your kids got a real buzz out of seeing you flying around a racetrack - but I bet they like it even more playing tag team wrestling with Dad on the lounge carpet . . .
I'm glad you're going to be OK. Even if you don't race again, you'll be a Dad every day for the rest of your life, like you've realised.
Much more fun, I bet! And don't worry about the memory problems. I can wait for the $500 you owe me :shifty:

Frosty, I had a similar concussion in 2002 from a cycling accident, and I can sympathise. The midday naps, the fatigue, in my case severe loss short term memory. Biggest fear was how long to get back to "normal". The OT's said maybe 6 months, but took longer. Despite all the problems, unfortunately it just takes time, cant rush it, the noodle has to find alternative pathways around the bits that have been damaged so I was told, thats why concussions are cumulative in their effect, there are limited alternative pathways. Of course anxiety, sleeplessness etc are also effects and exacerbate things.
Good luck Frosty, just hold onto the fact that it will get better with time

Concussions are a real pain. I've had a couple (rugby, and biking), and unfortunately there's not a lot that you can do other than wait. Funnily enough the second time (bike accident) wasn't so bad. Wish I'd kept my flattened helmet now.
Like yourself I've got a couple of (not-so) young chaps that I have to keep in line. The trouble is that they were old enough to give me grief when I had to have a 'mid-day' nap.
Take care mate.
