Depends on which area you ride, if down here I would not waste the dollars, most of my 'customers' have a device known as a 'radar detector' decorating their dash.
All work but none are fool-proof to an astute H.P. operator!! :bleh:

I recommend the Valentine,it comes with the ear piece option.as said its not full proof but helps.its the really sneaky philf that normaly get ya,ya wanna get a jammer as well.Ive seen bikes with a radar and jammers on the front and rear with a tricky little switch set up cause jamming is illegal or you could just do the runner judging they dont c ya plate.

.
Hamish and I have Escort 8500's which work pretty well. Only an insurance though, not a guarantee. They've paid for themselves several times over. In the car once we got done as the detector only picks up when the cops around with his doofery pinging other vehicles - if it's in "sleep" mode then the detector can't pick it up.
The 8500's have a built-in socket for the earpiece already fitted when you buy them.
I think they're around $1300 to buy retail, but we got our second one via a mate who brought 10 in from the US - from memory it was $750. If you want me to see if he's able to get any more let me know.
.
What?

Escort 8500 here too. Won't save you if the cop is using instant-on, but that just does not happen much in the central North Is. Too much traffic, too many opportunities missed, so they just leave them on.
Detector or not, stay legal(ish) between Te Poi and Cambridge.

.... there are a few good previous threads. Personally, a detector has slowed me down as I get paranoid every time it goes off! Not a bad thing really!

Buy a Harley and ride with an open face helmet. All your problems will be solved.

i have 2 radars.
a uniden gps one that tells you your speed and what direction your traveling
and also the bell xr65 i think.
The bell works better than the uniden but it does fals a lot more.
I would go for the Escort passport like the others above. They work realy well and dont false as much as the valentine.
They retail about 1300 but people are selling them on trademe brand new cheap as. a friend of mine got his from there for $500.
Also i dont think that laser jammers are illegal in New Zealand but radar jammers are.
Has anyone mounted there radar on there tl?
im planning on doing so but just wonderd on where to put it.

Dead right, the above combination has saved me from countless speeding tickets!!!! :ride: and theres no radar detector to break down or get nicked :)
Instant-on is the order of the day down this neck of the woods :buggerd:

It's not that jammers are strictly illegal, per se, but to jam at an effective wattage, the devices need to be licensed/telepermitted, which the manufacturers do not do. I can't remember the exact numbers, but in effect you can't jam a 15W radar speed gun with a 5W tranmission.

The best radars for motorcycles in my opinion would be the Valentine One or the Escort 8500, this is as they use the RJ11 phone jack power plug and you can get a wireless device that plugs into this and transmitts to a device in your helmet.
For all the Info you'd need go here: Radar Direct NZ (http://www.radardirect.co.nz)
I dont no wut their pricing is like but they have everything with the info you'll need.

tgalk about over priced. that HARD system is rubbish. 355 + gst for a wireless audio system hahaha pick that up for a 3.5mm system (which it uses) from dick smith for about 45 bucks

i've got an excort xp8500 that i bought brand new off trademe for $550. i have switched off the POP laser, k band and x band, and oply run laser and Ka. between my place and work there are two falses - the gull station on roscommon rd, and *sometimes* going past the BP at bombay, although i wonder if it's just a HP car with it's radar on at the fruit shop. it has excellent range, good features, and the only hting that i reckon it lacks over the val1 is the directional indication - is that worth an extra $500?

It is if you can't decide whether that weak Ka signal was a cop ahead sampling traffic or way back behind you, and you choose wrong.

LOL, the best part is after they get pinged for speeding and you tell them the c.d.s didn't work 'cos they were recorded ones, that only brand new blank ones work and they look at you and say "shit, I'm going to get some new ones, how will you catch me then you dick, you shouldn't have told me that, dum-arse" :killingme :killingme :killingme :blah:

wouldnt this help you as it addeds more reflective surfaces to the car for your laser?

So do these detectors pick up the laser guns that the cops are using now? I've been thinking about getting one for a while now but just not sure if it's worth it.
What about mobile cameras...do they pick those up ok.
And do you point it to the front or the rear of the bike...or do you just buy two units?

but has anyone seen the spam about the spray on stuff that blocks out the camera from reading the number plate by making it higfhly reflective. Apparently

The Laser does not 'scatter' like normal radar so is harder to pick up, it can be aimed accurately (is very 'vehicle specific") hence the reason it can be used to select a single vehicle from an oncoming line of traffic, plus the operator can be hidden some distance from the Police vehicle making it harder to notice anything is amiss until it is too late. :buggerd:
However don't let me put you off "investing" several hundred dollars to (hopefully) save you dollars/demerits :msn-wink:

Yip they pick up the laser guns the cops use, but once the radar has picked the laser up you are screwed cause they already will have a lock on you. The radars are only good for detecting the radar. They give you around 300 - 500m warning on speed cameras and alot more on normal radar (up to 2kms) depending on conditons etc. Ive have my Bel 985 for quite a while now. Saved me half a dozen times. As lynda said earlier in the thread its an insurance not a licence to speed and not get tickets ever.
Yip, you just mount it at the front of your bike. Ive got a bracket made from stainless by a mate that just bolts onto the mirror mount. Going to try and make a carbon fibre one sometime though :headbang:

I hear you HR, going by my present rate of speeding tickets I would need to get 8 or 10 more to equal the price of one decent detector - and then it wouldn't garauntee (sp) that I won't get any more.

mine saves me at least once a day.
like last night - on the expressway at ohinewai, cruising past a primera that had earlier passed me on double yellow lines, he was is such a hurry to get to the expressway to do 100k.....just as i pulled alongside radar beeped - stregnth 2 out of 8. on the picks, pulled in behind the primera. he thought i wanted a race, so he takes off - probably 140ish. he disappears into the distance with my radar getting stronger and stronger. *imagine my surprise* when i see xmas lights come on, and his brake lites. i just HAD to toot as i went past:killingme :killingme :killingme

Some do apparently but it only tells you when you are nicked because until the lasre is aimed at you it doesn't pick anything.

Yip, thats when you need to get a jammer. They are the only way you are going to get out of being pinged by a laser gun. So with a jammer and a radar you are definately decreasing your chances of getting a ticket but still can get one.
I know the best way to not get a ticket, don't speed, now thats a novel idea

hahah. Who would really think that a hat makes any difference, i mean your in a cop car and you'd at least have a uniform on minus the hat. Its not like the hat is wut gives u the authority to give out tickets.

It comes from section 114(1) of the Land Transport Act, which covers the power a police officer has to stop vehicles but says nothing about the power to issue a ticket.
114.Power to require driver to stop and give name and address, etc—
(1)An enforcement officer who is in uniform, or wearing a distinctive cap, hat, or helmet, with a badge of authority affixed to it, may signal or request the driver of a vehicle to stop the vehicle as soon as is practicable.
(2)An enforcement officer in a vehicle following another vehicle may, by displaying flashing blue, or blue and red, lights or sounding a siren, require the driver of the other vehicle to stop.

Spudchucka does the traffic police have to get behind the vehicle an flash to make a legal stop? so if for example you did not let that situation to occur could you claim not to have been legally stoped? say for example you approach from behind lane splitting or speed catch up, see the police car and stay behind the police car can they pull you over for an event of illegality that was behind them?
As for the hat thing well I always thought if you asked for a warrent and they have one it dosnt matter if they are dressed as coco the clown? but then thats a UK rule?
I have a rader detector it cost nothing its called a brain I wear it under my helmet and it.
1. detects oncoming lights flashing
2. sees parked vans
3. spots falcons and Holdens with no tow bars or spoilers
4. rocognises open dry roads with no traffic in safe conditions
5. blurts and slows
6. have never had a speeding ticket on a bike ( but have done plenty of fun)
If I ever get a speed ticket on a bike the Brain will need a new battery.

Dealing with an offence that happened on the road behind a patrol car is no problem. To effect a normal traffic stop the patrol vehicle should be behind the offending vehicle as in section 114(2), (see my previous post in this thread).

So long as you ID yourself, (name, rank, station) and produce your ID card, you could be wearing anything, (within reason. Lou's studded Harley thong with tassles attached might be stretching things somewhat).

Most sensible comment on the topic yet!!
If I had a choice between a radar detector and one of those breath testing kits the detector would stay on the shelf.
Yeah, before you all get going I already KNOW the above makes it sound like I drink more than I speed!!!
I would lose my job a whole lot quicker for drink-driving than for speeding, plus you have a speedo to let you know when you are going 'over the limit' but the drink-driving thing is a little trickier.
