Byrne out for season

Ex-British Superbike champion Shane Byrne will miss the rest of the MotoGP season due to the broken wrist he suffered in practice for the Czech MotoGP.

A new X-ray last week confirmed that the wrist had been much more badly damaged than had been first thought "The scaphoid has snapped in two and the ligaments are so badly damaged they are not holding the wrist together," said Byrne.

"I went to Italy over the weekend for the MotoGP doctor, Dr Costa, to have a look. He confirmed my wrist had fallen apart and I'll go back to Italy and have an operation in San Marino. “

"I had some bad injuries at the start of my British Superbike career but went on to win the title. Let's hope I can do the same in MotoGP," added Byrne.

This kind of thing is scarily common. When I used to report on British Superbikes, I met up with the late Steve Hislop a few weeks after his horrific crash at the Brands Hatch WSB round - the one when he came down head first in the gravel trap on turn 1.

I asked Steve how he was doing - and he told me he was still having problems with a trapped nerve, as he wasn't able to get any strength into his arms when trying to corner.

A couple of weeks later, he had another X-Ray... and was diagnosed with a broken neck! His muscles were so strong that they were holding everything in place.

I'd imagine the same was the case with Byrne's wrist. Initially, the muscles etc would have been gripping it, it is only after things calm down that the real level of injury sometimes shows.

(mine took 2 years,even then it was too damaged so
