Apart from the worst laid out page ever, it's a good concept.

Probably because it wasn't so much "designed" (as in the modern marketing sense) as sorta congeled together (by a plain but well sorted techie).

It's ugly as sin and is hardly the epitome of good HCI design, but it's fast-loading and useful. If I was the type of person who uses a mouse a lot I'd consider this, but as a user of Vimperator and myriad Firefox `quick searches' I already have the ability to do what this page offers.
Homepage set to blank. If I want to search Wiktionary, I just hit Ctrl-L and type `wk SomeWordIDon'tUnderstand'. Google is `g'. Wikipedia is `wp'. Allmusic is `am'.
Your page (you are the designer, I assume?) is a close approximation of this for mouse users. Pretty it up, lay it out more sensibly, put some Google text ads at the right of the screen and you might be able to get some money for beer if you're lucky.

I didn't design it, (but I know who did) and I agree it looks crude, but I like it.
And no, I don't use a mouse (much), I use a spaceball.

<hints id="hah_hints"></hints>Spaceball! Wicked :D They're pretty rarely seen these days, but recently I was in one company's labs where they do work on navigation systems and spend a lot of time with maps. They all had trackballs, might've been spaceballs. Apparently ideal for scrolling around huge maps.
It does look crude; there's nothing wrong with that (except for marketing to the general public). The interface I spend most of my time looking at is nothing more than white text on a black background, can't get much cruder than that. However there are a couple of usability concerns with the interface, such as better `tabbing' order, textbox/label alignment etc. But I take it it was written by a programmer, and for a programmer those things are perfectly acceptable  I, too, detest the HCI side of programming.

Yup, still weapon of choice for a lot of people working in 3D environment.
For me that's 3D CAD work, mostly in Rhino.
Still waiting for a 3D hologram "touchscreen" so I can fingerpaint stuff inside a real 3D desktop display LOL.
