Time for a new Tattoo

Hey, anyone know of a good tattoo artist in the kapiti-wellybum region?

I have a small shoulder tat, a full thigh and now its time to cover the other shoulder and shoulder blade with a japanese-esque tat incorporating a monkey, a rat, a dog and an ox (the chinese years of my family).

I got the other two tats done in Auckland so I'm a little lost down here for choice.

Dave at tattoo freaky is really good. Especially if you are after really fine detail. All the guys at Tattoo City in Cuba Mall are very professional and always do a great job.

If I was going to get a tattoo, I'd wait until I'm in Miami one day and go to "Miami Ink", and get one of those guys (or Kat) to do it, holy shit they are good!! Anyone else caught that program on the Discovery Travel and Living channel? It's one of my favs, amazing artists.:yes:

the next one is pretty much going to cover my lower back from one hip to the other...

Trouble is, it costs an arm and leg in Orkland...have been quoted anywhere between $400 and $600 by 3 different places!!!:shit::gob:

I know there are a lot of good artists out there, and have been recommended a few, but it's just the difference in prices quoted for the same job that kind of gets my goatee...

How can they honnestly justify charging about $150 an hour and upwards? Maybe I'm in the wrong industry...

Well they are artists doin somthing that will last you a lifetime, and you think of that cost over a few years, it works out pretty reasonable. Thats how I think of it anyway.

Mine was $150 and I was there for an hour and a half, 30 minutes prepping, wiping and getting his gear ready.....(and a quick ciggie break), then 1 hour tattooing. This doesn't include the time he spent making the stencil.

I had my dog tattooed on my chest and it looks just like the photo - everyone who sees it comments on how much it looks like my dog, and not just any old dog.

I'm awaiting a quote on an arm band at the moment.

Definitely, this is why I do the leg work beforehand. I got my first tattoo done by Rob Kraus. Its just a small on on my shoulder but a wicked job. Then my second done by Graham Cavanagh at Tattoo art. This one stretches from just above my knee up to my hip and slightly around my arse (as per the banana pic on kb arse). For that one I didn’t give a shit how much I paid as long as it was done right and I was really pleased.

IMHO, never walk into a place and get the tat there and then. I've been thinking about my next tat for over a year, and now the next step is finding the right person. They need the right energy, because this will come through in the tat. If I don’t get this, I just walk out. There has to be a connection.

You have a goatee?....or is that a pelvic goatee? My shoulder cost $80 being an ickle one. The leg was MUCH more, and was 4 sittings. I'm amazed watching Miami Ink where they do some tat's in one sitting, unless they use the magic of TV. Then again, my multiple sittings were as much to do with my availability than anything else. Each was about 1.5 hours and that was full on tattooing.

There is some interesting history of the western tattoo.

Generally western tradition has 'frowned' upon the tattoo. This has stemmed from the Greeks hostility of having the 'body beautiful' marked in anyway. Without getting to deep into this many of the Greek's enemies had a culture of tattoos. The Persians are the most obvious but the Greeks considered the tattoo a barbarian practice. So too did the Romans for nmuch the same reasons as the Greeks and it was not untill the Legions were in Britain that the first of the Roman soldiers got tattoos. This probably had more to do with the locals (mercenaries) having tattoos because of the pagan culture more than anything else. This tradition has manifested down to this day in that the military rank and file tended to get tattoos where as the practice was still not accepted within the commissioned ranks.

Outside of the military seaman were the forerunners of tattoos as we know them today. Again it was the so called 'dregs' of society, merchant seaman and the press ganged for the Royal Navy that got themselves 'inked.'

Much has been said of the Victorian era where the ladies of society had tattoos. But it must be remembered that the 'tat' was very much a stigma even in those enlightned times; it was hidden.

It is difficult to put a date of the modern tattoo. My own feeling was that even in the fifties the tattoo was a sign of rebellion that had moved from the military and seaman and onto the 'working class. It became 'fashionable' within two distinct groups. The biker (milk bar cowboys) and some of the so called bodgie. In the fifties it was still a 'bloke' thing.

In the seveties it moved into mainstream of society and to the ladies.

My own view is that it was in the seventies that the modern tattoo and I'm not talking about design, but its acceptance as a legitimate art form came of age. It was a fully fledged statement of the indavidual and as such had no need to hide any more.

For those who have it flaunt it, there is some great art out there.

But me?? I was born naked that's the way I'll die.

I had mine done by Roger. Tattoo Art by Roger. He's been in the industry for approximately 30 years (I think more). Some of his patrons have been famous, some infamous. I don't give a damn about either. I went to him because I wanted top quality work done.
He's is at the upper end of Cuba St, always willing to discuss your designs and offer suggestions.

Demographics in Ponsonby are really good...did mine...........the other one near Colemans in Ponsonby is where Robbie Williams went.

Looking to have another with a Christian fish and 'Nats' tattooed inside..my other one is a antigue marble effect celtic cross in colour....$120 I was quoted and the cross cost me $150
