I got my car license and bike license on the same day - actually within half an hour of each other. That was great til the new card licenses came in and my bike license 'fell off' the system. So I went through the whole learner thing just recently (in the last year)

Got my learners at 15, I'm 29 now and still got it, I've become quite attached to it.

I had it taken away from me 2 months, and 13 days ago, but the monday after the next race at Manfield I'll be booking my restricted.

If memory serves me right I had my learners licence for approximately

ONE MONTH

before sitting and passing my full.

This was a very long time ago and my full licence test involved riding around the block, it was raining and the Transport cop didnt want to get wet or take the car out to follow me, and then at the back of the station doing progressively smaller and tighter figure 8's until the cop was satisfied I could handle the bike. A TS125J Suzuki.

Things were different in the OLDEN DAYS.

Same cop gave me my first ticket about a week later for failing to stop properly at a stop sign. I didnt put my foot down on the ground I just balanced on the spot. I belonged to a motorcycle club at the time (Papakura MC) and they had been teaching me how to ride and handle a TRAILS bike.

BTW in those days there was no limit to the size of bike you could get as a learner nor was there a requirement to wear a helmet on any road other than the motorway if your spped didnt exceed 30mph. One friend of mine sat his full licence on a Kawasaki 750cc triple and passed.

Never had a bike license....:shit:

Had a learners car for a decade or so, When I converted it to an Aussie license they issued me a full.

So, never really sat a test other then the 20 questions....which was just under 20 years ago.

BH - 18 hrs. Learner - 6 month 2 days. Restricted - 6 month 3 days.

Had the cage full since I was 17. So it was a pain being restricted to 250 AND 10pm curfew after over 30 yrs of driving.

Got Learners in 1986. Had it for 9 months. Had restricted for 9 months. And full since. A mate got his Learners in '87 and just got his Full about 3 weeks ago. Legend!

Mine was six weeks. That was the minimum period for someone that didn't already hold a car licence. Oh, it was called a Provisional rather than a learners.

Coldrider
5th August 2007, 13:48
Yes, they were a provisional, lasted for eight weeks unless they were renewed for another eight weeks. Just sit the written, pay the provisional and go out on the streets fresh as.
Incidentily MR Merde, I sat mine on a TS125K.

Hi

Got my learners at 15 and my full at 30 after getting a $400 fine riding back from mates house one sunday morning on my RG500.
If I didn't get that fine I would still have my learners.
It's taken a while for me to get round the fact I am actually legal to ride.

I've only had my L since 17-09-2005!!! I must have ages to go 'fore I can get onto my R, especially since some of you far more experienced riders all had your Learners' licenses for years 'n' years 'n' years...

I don't know the actual length of time I had it but it was the absolute minimum. I got the ticket to ride, did the defensive riding course (required to 1/2 the learners licence time) then got my full.

That was back in the day when you simply got upgraded when you had enough time without an accident... (if I recall correctly)

went to MOT, 5 oral questions, out to the 80cc scooter cop laughs and says his bike won't go that slow, we go back inside and he gives me a full licence....just like that...

Car Licence - got my Learners in 1987 - sat the full test 2002 - passed first time.
Bike Licence - Got my learners May 2006 - restricted October 2006 - full May 2007 - took exactly 365 days.

Learners about 10 years, will go for the big R in about 2 months i guess

14th August 2007, 15:29
Got my 250cc licence in Perth, Dec 2004. Got full licence in Qld May 2005. So I was on the mighty Virago for 6 months-ish. If I'd had to stay on the 250 any longer I probably would have stopped riding.

Luckily I've had my full long enough that I can just transfer it on to my NZ licence after doing the 20 questions jobbie. I think I've got a year to do so though.

Note to self - must check when can be bothered.

Car - Got my learners at 15 and restricted as soon as I could.. 14 years later I still have a restricted.

Bike - Learners now, sitting restricted on the 25th.. Assuming I pass I'll be on restricted in at total of 6 months 1 day and plan on getting my full as soon as possible afterwards. Will be nice to be able to travel at over 70km/h without an L plate... Oh wait...

If they only let you drive <1500cc cars on a restricted I'm sure I'd have got my car full a whole lot quicker. Only got one $400 fine in 14 years for driving home at 1am. If I'd been driving any other car than an Rx-7 I'm sure I'd be $400 richer

I think back then, they called it a 'provisional', valid for six weeks. I had one of those and got my full before I had to renew. Needed full to race on street circuits and the bike (TR250 Suzi) had to have a rego plate attached somewhere (usually inside the fairing.... Oh how times have changed...... This was early seventies....

Me too.Car license day I turned 15 and got "provisional" same day & full license a few weeks later:wari:

It was in Ashvagas.Brother took me to station on his xl250motosport.Nice policeman told me to ride around the block. He stayed and chatted to the bro-I pulled up outside station. He'd already written out my license:niceone::niceone:

Dosent get any easier than that.I had a cool brother who taught me to ride and provided me with his old bikes & my parents were great about me riding too.Back in the olden days.........:scooter:

It really sounds like licenses were much more easily obtained back in the day, when a cop followed you around the block. Nowadays you have to literally "rehearse" for the test.

So in NZ you get trained how to pass a test... Then you get a driving license.
