I see in a recent issue of MCN that KTM are testing a new small 125/250 sized sportbike with the latest 690cc single (with around 70hp and 48lbft - healthy). Apparently a 500cc or 650cc single Cagiva Mito on the way as well. I'm kinda liking this concept, I reckon they'd be awesome fun with pretty good performance.
Anybody else agree with me? I reckon they'd sell by the shipload! And if Aprilia made an RS250 replacement with the 550 v-twin...

Reproducing the Goldstar or the 7R or the Manx are they, I bet they sound awesome.

Cagiva showed a Mito 500concept bike a few years back. Looked pretty cool.
As for the RSVR550, already been done. http://www.spagforth.com/rsxv550_project_log.htm

Niiice. Loved those RS250s.
Personally, I've always wondered what could be shoehorned into an NC35 frame. Litre v-twin, anyone? Of course, it would have to look stock to the casual observer. Apart from the shredded rear tyre -- that'd be a dead giveaway.

I've always thought it would be cool to stick a honda 250 v-twin into a Cagiva Mito or the latest Aprilia RS125. They would look awesome and have that v-twin sound each marque is famous for. You couldnt get a cooler learner bike than these.:scooter:

Couldn't agree more... the RS125 chassis is sex down to the radial caliper

About time, far too few big single road bikes. Completely different machine to ride, great way to get your kicks legally in the tight stuff.
Friend had a GB500 briefly, XR500 engine, what a cool bike.

you need to look at performance bikes magazine also: your library might have them: there is a specials section and it had a RS250 with SVX550 motor (guy bought an SVX550 just for the motor....) and also if you are into this sort of stuff check out the CR & S Vun here (http://www.crs-motorcycles.com/indexENG.htm)
I also am a fan of singles for road bikes having owned an SRX 6 in the past, and a GB400. they are excellent in tight going, not intimidating to ride and a bunch of fun. Nimble is good in a motorbike I find.
Oh, and the lads at Performance Bikes are building a Cagiva Mito with a CR500 motor.... crikey! the only thing is all that stuff is very expensive here...

Just going through my collection of pics and found this one, an Aprilia RS250 (I think) with a yammie SRX690 engine. Looks like fun.

Yes, a big single is fun. Not too heavy or too big with good pulling power and excellent handling. Combine this with good fuel consumption - a nice ride.
Not really an out and out sports bike, though.

Ok. This is the very rare and expensive Ducati Supermono - only produced in limited numbers in the early '90's, it was a 992cc 4 valve single that made 75hp at 10000RPM (stock).
The kicker is, it weighed 118kg dry! This would have been (is) a very potent little bike!

This doesn't look to bad either

Hmmm interesting, Ducati's site has the Supermono as a 992cc single
ENGINE
Type Bicilindrico ad L, distribuzione Desmodromica 2 valvole per cilindro, raffreddamento ad aria
Bore and Stroke 94 x 71,5 mm
Total displacement 992 cc
Compression ratio 10:1
Timing system Double overhead camshaft, 4 valves, toothed belt, desmodromic system
But even as a 570cc bike, it's got some serious stonk. I never saw one here, but the concept is fantastic. A better road engine than a twin maybe?

After riding a supermoto 650 I was instantly wondering why no one has produced a sportsbike equivalent, 'cos the braking and handling are incredible. If they can build a simple road legal 60hp offroader that weighs 110kg's then surely a similar weight sportsbike should be possible.
Unfortunately not many manufacturers have got the balls to make it in it's purest form. The bean counters will insist in a dual seat (meaning a heavy subframe), pillion pegs, crap brakes and suspension, 10000km service intervals etc. And before you know it you've got something with 45hp and weighs 160kg's.......yawn.

Gilera Saturno was pretty - there are some in NZ.
Some English bike mag put an aprilia 550 vtwin into an aprilia rs250 frame. Nice but with a 50 hour maintenance interval...

pi * d squared /4 * l =496 . There was a supermono on Ebay in january last year. They were talking numbers in the $US200,000 region

A shame, it looks like it's cocked up. That Italian text says it's got two cylinders in a L-twin shape (90-degree V-twin), 2-valve, etc. Strange because afterwards it says it's 4-valve.

each description is half right. It was a L twin shape, just that the vertical con rod was attached to another balancer rod but no piston. And it was a dohc 4 valve.

I'd love to see a drawing of this, sounds fascinating. So this balancer mechanism actually protrudes from the crankcase? Why such a way of doing it?<hints id="hah_hints"></hints>

from http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~fhs/ducati%20museum.html
I could be wrong but a 90 degree v twin has (close to) perfect balance. Doing it this way maintains the balance but with a single piston engine without the power sapping characteristics of balancer shafts and their attendant crappy chain drive

Husgvarna have come close with a cross between a supermoto and a naked bike. I think it was about 650cc. Me, I've always preferred naked styling to fairings and think this bike looks like sex on wheels.

Just had a nosey through a couple of books and Rodney O'Connor's bike was the same bike Robert Holden rode
Robert raced it at the 94 I.O.M (2nd place in the singles race) and also Assen & Monza, and DNFed at the Ulster GP because of big-end failure which was traced back to someone installing the wrong connecting-rod bolts during the assembly process (Hand built).
Rodney O'Connor received the bike after this and raced it in stock trim in the 95 NZ formula 3 series winning every race, though having your old man owner of Eurobike they could afford a then $42000 toy

Here's a spy shot of KTM's RC4 prototype, using the 65hp LC4 690 motor. This one is wearing a Ducati fairing, given that the 690SM is around 150kg they could make these pretty light if they put their minds to it.
Cheers

This is probably a little to off-road but road tyres, slightly less travel, better seat and you could have a road sporty

I had a SZR 660 which is a single, biggest lemon I have ever owned, I had ti 3 months, it spent at least half of that back at the dealers getting fixed, I paid 1800 GBP for it and the dealer spen 2000GBP in parts in that time fixing it. Cornered like shite, completely under powered, numb bum after half an hour due to the vibrations.
