So you can go and change your plate for a new one for some silly cheap amount ($7 or $14 or something). A personalised plate starts at $500 (are they a govt agency or hold the contarct from LTNZ/LTSA?). Can I go and do a plate swap for the cheap price but instead of taking the plate they have next in line in the box, can I say what I'd like the number to be? Do they just tap the numbers into the computer? Can I tell them I already have the plate?

As soon as you have any control over the content of your plate there is a fee. It is a smaller fee if you conform to the convention of [number number alpha alpha alpha] but it's still $399 and for the full personal number plate it's about $700 now.

Damn! I thought so. So dumb considering they enter the numbers in manually anyway! The boxes are in order but there are only 20 or so in each box. They aren't loaded onto the system in number order. Bloody gubmit ruining my cheap thrills!

Ha, when my old man was registering his '69 CB750 the dude at the place was a big fan. Needless to say the bike ended up with a pretty good plate, including "69" in it.

Mind you the personalised number plate system here is quite lenient compared to Blighty.
All sorts of rules must be obeyed like AAA111 os about as much flexibility as you get.

Sometimes they'll let you choose from the ones they've got, but not usually. I was told I had to have the first one in the pile, but it sounded like there might be some leeway. Unfortunately, they were all uninteresting, but a LOT smaller than the one that mysteriously "fell off" my VFR750 (must've been the extra wind resistance...)

But he didn't get the "69" plate that is on my CB750...
it starts with 69 then the letters H...
see if you can guess the plate number, and those that know me aren't allowed to try:dodge:

Hahahaha! Good on ya! You have to take the good luck when it comes a. I had the plates stolen off my car years ago and they had three boxes of plates there when I went in and the girl let me choose. Just went by the testing basterds at Westgate and the sour old cow wouldn't even tell me what letter they had! She said pay and I'll give you one. Mind you she mightta been suss since I said mine was stolen and when she wanted the police report # I was all "stolen? I meant lost! Yeah! Lost." Hehehehe.

69LIK or 69SUK would be better.
Saw one in the UK [X351ARO]. Looked innocent enough until I went past and saw it in my rear view mirror!

Rg had "81TUF"
GB had "50UEX" - everyone asked if it was an indian.
So i think ive had good luck with plates.
If i was going to P-Plate it would have to be something like
