Ok ... I may need to harden up .... "butt" after about 2 hours or so of riding my GSX750F, my bum is bloody sore! Is it my bike ? or am I a wimp? Do I need a replacement seat ? ... am I expecting too much to be able to ride for about 300Km or so between breaks ?
Any "printable" advice please........ I'd like to get to the bottom of this. :shit:

Sounds like your going pretty quick there:dodge:. Honestly though why do you want to go more than 300km in one hit? You could try a sheepskin seat cover before any seat mods, ask a bike shop where you'd get one.:scooter:

I find it depends on what leathers I wear, if I move around on my seat more for leaning etc......or maybe you just do not have a KB Arse :innocent:

Oh ok .... no I wasn't trying to do 300Km in 2 hours .... I have been getting a sore butt after two hours of riding, which I think equated to about 190Km. I expect to be able to ride about 300Km before having to get off for a break. I was a bit gutted that I had to get off my bike after about 190Km.
Im not sure if others have had the same experience after 2 hours of riding, or its just the seat on my GSX750F, or the lack of riding time on my part means that I haven't hardened up enough yet ... ?
The sheepskin thing doesn't really appeal to me. I'd rather have a seat that is comfortable. I have heard some people like Corban seats.
Maybe some models of bike just have good standard seats, while others are rubbish.
I'm intending to get a bigger bike at some stage, so will be very interested in the comfort level of the next bike, before laying down the cash!

Yeah I do move around a bit, depends on whether I'm pushing it along or not. I dont wear leathers, just the synthetic trou and jacket. I don't wear jeans underneath .... that is a no no in my experience.
And you may be right. .... I may not have that seasoned KB arse yet !!

I do a lot of long distance travelling and a sore arse just comes with the territory. 400kms Tauranga to Whangarei and return (800kms in one weekend) every 3rd weekend or so. My bike fuel range is 240kms when commuting (less when having fun in the tight stuff). After 400kms Im well ready to finish up, but think about the guys who do the Grand Challenge, 1,000miles in 24hours! The seat on the RSVR is very solid, but surprisingly comfortable. Still, after every 80kms or so I have to stand on my footpegs and stretch my legs, twirl my wrists and stretch my fingers.
From a safety point of view? Take a break every 250kms, 300kms I think is too long regardless of the sore bum issue.

Some bikes are worse than others, my CBR600 gave me a sore butt but my ZX9 is very comfortable(apart from my back), fuel range 330kms at up to 115kph.
Some riders get a old piece of sheepskin rug, cut it to fit on the seat with straps, works well. When it gets wet ?

You'll harden up with time. Next time riding, think about where you are contacting the bike, Hands, feet and butt and the distribution. Maybe an answer there for you.

From experience, yes, your bike is a bit harder on the unseasoned KB posterieur...The seat, coupled with the sitting position will definitely get your buttcheeks sore.
If the sheepsking doesn't appeal (although I think they're bloody marvellous), why don't you try to find out if you can find an after market gel seat for your bike.
Hubby and I do quite a lot of long trips to rallies, and the gel seats are wicked!!!
Personally I can stay 9 nine hours on my baby VTR, and not have any problems...
You'll still eventually get a sore arse with a gel seat, but nowhere near as much...Good luck!

Well Unit, you certainly have more riding experience than me, and the 800km Whangarei/Tauranga return ever 3rd weekend ride would give your bum something to complain about.
I rode about that many K's in one day (unintentionally), last Wednesday ... when I left Whangarei and rode down the Kaiaua, Miranda coast rode to Thames, then up to Coramandel, then over to Whitianga. I was going to stop there for the night, but got a call from my son saying my mother was admitted to Whangarei Hospital, and I needed to get back there pretty quick. So at about 7.30pm in the pouring rain, I rode the unfamiliar (to me) road via Tairua to Thames. (bloody slow trip !) then quickened the pace across the Hauraki planes behind an obliging Tin Top that was sitting on around 130Kmh to the Hamilton to Auckland motorway. I shuffled up there at around 110Kmh, until the motorway was closed around Takanini somewhere, and I had to detour up the Gt Sth Rd, and then get back onto the mtway at Manukau. Still raining, I rode until I got to the big BP station on the northern motorway, and stopped for gas there. My ass was very sore by then, and I had been doing some standing up and shifting around during that trip. I left the gas station at about 11pm, and had a slowish ride in rain and traffic up to around Wenderholm, where the rain mostly stopped, the road became dryish .... and the traffic thinned out. I was able to move along a fair bit quicker from there, and arrived at Whangarei Hospital at 12.20pm Not sure exactly how many K's that was, but think the round trip must have been around 750 or so ?? But .. my Butt was SORE !!! The good thing was my mum was ok! and that made it all worthwhile.
However ... that was my longest ride so far, and I knew from just riding from Whangarei down to Auckland, that I was not enjoying having a very sore bum. I stopped at Clevedon to gas up ( I hadn't run out ) as I needed to get off my bike!!!
I would probably agree about the 250K safety thing. I know when I bought my bike in Hamilton, that I broke the trip back to Whangarei by stopping twice. That trip was about 300K, and I felt that was a good distance to ride for a day on my bike.
I know if my butt wasn't sore ..... I could do 250 and perhaps 300Km without feeling fatigued in any other sense. I would just ride as far as my tank would go before needing to gas up again.
Now that I have ridden a bit of distance on this bike, I would like to do longer trips over a few days, so am looking for more comfort to do that. It will mean a new bike in the future ........ something with more grunt for two up riding, and still agile enough for a bit of fun in the tight!!! :shit:

Yes I think I may have been just "sitting" a bit too much, but that's how I would like to ride when I'm not pushing things too much, and want to enjoy the sights. I think some bikes enable you to do that more easily than others. However .. I DO need to harden up !!

I may have to trade the GSXF in on something a bit more adventuresome. I have been eyeing up a new Bandit 1250 ... however I am cautious not to let my GSXF see that I'm flirting with another bike .... I may have to save the "accessorising" for my new mount. :scooter: Thanks for the advice.

Sounds like a bit of hardening up might be in order. Spent a bit of time riding that model of bike and found it pretty comfortable. The CBR600RR was a much smaller and harder seat which made it more uncomfortable. However as I was continiously moving my arse from side to side for courners it was not a problem. Maybe your like me now? I sit in a wheelchair all day and do not move around in it at all. I have to lift up with my arms and move my arse off the seat of the chair for a arse pressure relief. If your sitting in the one position for any length of time your arse will get sore as the blood flow is hindered. Moving around on the seat can help that and a more agressive style of riding might help. Don't think its ony related to a sportsbike rider either as I moved around just as much on my 2004 DRZ400 too. Hope this helps. :done:

Hi Gizzit,
Interesting question. Time on the bike and ergonomics will help. I had thought about a sheepskin seat cover and while in Berry, NSW I went to the 'Good Wool Co'. who advertise in Aussie bike mags.
For the V-strom they could make a seat for $A 250! Hell, I knew I could get a custom seat made in NZ for $500, so I declined and enjoyed the road from Berry into Kangaroo Valley, great ride.
Good luck with the bum hardening project. Cheers.

Sheep skins are fine for long distance work. Your piles will thank you for it. You can even wear jeans. If you don't like it use it as a floor mat or give it to your pet. Other factors to consider are is your suspension setup right and are tire pressures correct. Too hard a suspension and or too high tire pressures can contribute to early pain in the arse (and back) syndrome.

I found I would get uncomfortable within 200km when riding on SH1 or two-up. It's the subtle shifting of weight on a curly road that provides comfort, so if you can shift your position/weight forward & back on the seat it seems to make a difference. I also pop back onto the rear seat in towns to shift the pressure.
I did 1323 kms yesterday on two fills, ie 400, 400 & 500 kms per stint ( report here http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/blogs/viewblog.php?userid=9500&entry=239 ) and didn't have a problem walking up the stairs to the house afterward. That was on a stock ST seat with no gels or sheepskins.

The riding position and seat of the gsx are pretty comfy (compared to most sportbikes anyway).
The foam in your seat may be getting a bit tired if it's uncomfortable after only a couple of hours. Rider Custom Seats (pm Cajun) will do a foam replacement (of much higher quality and comfort) for around $200ish - well worth it if you plan to keep the bike for a while.

In my experience you gradually get road fit over time, I practiced for the GC a couple of years ago and the difference was amazing, I went from aboy 200 km in a hit to maybe 5 or 600 just stopping for fuel and back to about 95% after 10 minutes off the bike. Corbin Seats are awesome though although they don't promote moving round in the seat too much sometimes which can be a problem. Never had a Gel seat and I've found Sheepskin (for me) to be a waste of time. Just stop farting about and get in to the groove.

You might find that the foam in your seat is stuffed. This is very, very common across all the brands, especially Hondas!
Here is a pic of my 2006 RSV seat once we cut into it:

At the time of this pic, the bike had done 1500km.
This air pocket was the size of a bread and butter plate. If your seat has something similar, your arse is effectively sitting on the plastic seat base so it's not surprising that you're getting uncomfortable after a couple of hundred KM.

Unfortunately there is no easy fix that looks good and feels even better as a pillow under your arse would certainly paint you as a powder puff!!
I had a similar problem when I started riding again, so i embarked on a journey to solve the problem with longterm results!
The fix requires you to get your missus or any other willing participant to repeatedly paddle your ass with a well oiled Kookaburra cricket bat!
Within the week I felt as though i was riding on a marshmellow cloud!
It just goes to show if you put in the hard yards you can solve any problem!!

What about one of those bead seat covers? Just throwing it out there. Maybe get a nice lil massage on your trip...........

Well Guitana .... you've obviously ( or should I say - your wife ) has struck upon something that works for you, and ........ well quite frankly ..... I'm pleased for you both.
However .... being a little bit old fashioned .... and a true blu Kiwi, .... there is no way I would subject myself to being swatted by a piece of "Australian" wood .... well oiled or not!!
I think I'll just develop my riding stamina ..... in the more orthodox way ..... in the saddle!
But I do admire your openness and willingness to bare-all to this forum, around your particular issue ..., and the hard yards you have put in, to solve your problem ... I hope you have many years of riding pleasure ....

Well thats a bit of an indictment about quality of newish bikes !!! Bloody hell!! :shit: I will definitely be in to see you in Tauranga, when I get a new bike. I'm not going to spend the money on my current bike .... as I want to change up to a litre bike or more, for sport touring. When I have figured out exactly which bike I want ... I'll ride down and see you guys.
Cheers,
Grant. :niceone:

Tel me about it! One would only expect the old bikes to be stuffed, not the newer ones. It might help explain why your seat is so uncomfortable though...

It all depends on what type of riding you want to do. I would have thought 2-300km in a day shouldn't be a problem with minimal discomfort. However there is no reason why you cant ride the GSX all day and half the night. When I had mine I did the Southern Cross and Grand Challenge on it and could still walk at the end of the day. Lets face it you are going to suffer some discomfort no matter what your seat is made of. If you spend a lot of hours sitting on it.
Best to just get out and ride the thing get your butt and other body parts used to it. I find standing on the pegs or letting your feet hang off, when it's safe to, going through towns at 50kph helps stretch things out.
