Thought it might be good to some of the members here who don't give too much thought to their riding gear to look at post # 65 on this link (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?p=96943&posted=1#post96943)

Hope Vagabond doesn't mind me using his misfortune as a learning tool but I think we'd be silly not to remind ourselves of how much it can injure you if you come off into a solid object. Thankfully, we can minimise the damage with good gear... if we're wearing it!

p.s. Entry level back protectors only cost about $125. (Thats about two and a bit trips to a physio or less than half a day in hopsital fees.)

Unfortunately in VB's case he hit a conrete post below the area covered by the protector....even though the injury is higher up.

Back protectors are a really good thing....highsided on a track and not even a bruise on my back. My dainese has been there for all of my offs and is still in good shape (!) 1 highside (track) 1 tractor (road) 3 lowsides (track).

Yup, I wear a Knox spine protector. So good it comes with a $25k paraplegic and $50k quadraplegic gauruntee. Not much point in spending $500+ on a decent lid if it means your stuck in a wheel chair with all your faculties.

I got a back protector just recently. I suggest its worth the buy. They are not expensive, but consider that if the impact from falling off a snow board on the learners slope can easily bust arms, falling off a motorcycle is quite capable of doing backs - doesnt even need to be moving.

Back protectors have been around for ages, but it is only in the last 10 years or so that they have hit the streets in any numbers, I will get one as soon as funds allow, and count myself lucky so far.....

What size boots are ya? Was just wondering about some 45s I had around. And I've a pair of 43's sitting in my cupboard. They could do with resoling (some of them stick on soles'd do) or another coat or two of "SpredSole" (what I used), but otherwise they're good. Freeeeee (eeeeee) to a good home. Or even a bad 'un. Better than cluttering up my cupboard. Alongside the AGV helmet I should chainsaw up...
Incidently, I was looking in CashPerverters, and the helmets there look ratty compared to my AGV, and it's been dropped on the concrete a couple of times (landing on the vents or visor, not the helmet proper) and been crashed a few times (hitting various parts, but not the helmet proper! Weird....) So my wife said, "Hmmmm. these look crappier'n your old helmet... you could sell it!"
Nah, I couldn't. Not to a fellow motorbicyclist.
I reckon it'd be OK for summat like those go kart places though.
Or a chainsawing.
Or summat.

Or not....

43-45.. 10 ish i think... tend to go larger coz i wear explorer sox!

I'll take any boots off anyone!!! my blundstones tend to a) be not waterproof (reason I left buckets early last time) , b) bloody cold coz of the steelcaps and c) quite scary coz they would slip off my feet in an off

Cheers all!

Maybe, but in the US head injuries kill and maim more bikers than spinal injuries.

Is that statistic normalised against the number of morons who don't wear helmets, though?

Wanna reason to wear a back protector-Im walking today because I wore one on sunday when I crashed. I checked out thee back of my leathers and my sore back now has an explaination.
One of the links in my back protector has a crush mark on it and my leathers have white paint on em from the sharks tooth.
Yes I was racing but i was also in the best /safest place to crash Although pukie isn't the most bike freindly track in the world its still safer than the road.
