Is it as bad as they say? :shit:

Nah. I needed one out and my dentist said it was best to take both from the same side out, so had two out at the same time. First one didn't hurt, second one the drugs didn't kick in properly until after they'd taken it out, it was a bit reluctant also and they left a bit of tooth in my gum that worked its way out about a month later. I got a dry rot also that hurt like shit, but otherwise it was fine, giggled and made jokes the whole way through, (as much as you can with a mouth full of cottonwool and drool). I think they were glad to be rid of me when I left. You'll be fine.:sunny:

The worst part of the surgery involves your wallet. The procedure does not hurt a bit, but for a week afterwards you will be so uncomfortable (but not in pain) that you'd almost wish you'd be in pain instead.
When I underwent the procedure, I got a box of industrial strength painkliller pills and I haven't taken a single one (and I have a very low pain threshold).

if u have insurance or loads'a money it is really cool. because if you do you want to see an oral surgeon who gives you valium injection (see hitchers post in a drug thread today). lovely stuff i wish i hadnt had all four taken out at once!
If your getting a dentist to do it - sucks to be you! bahahahahahaha

I am not qualified to answer. I cut my wisdom teeth at age 16. 34 years later all four of them are all in place and capable of masticating furiously on request.

A great big nothing. You'll wonder what you were stressing out about.

I had mine out through the otago uni dental school...theyre supposed to charge you a relatively minor fee but 5 years later its not looking like Im going to get a bill:dodge:
I had three out (I was missing one for some reason). I came out of it thinking I remembered the whole thing but the more I thought about it I realised I didnt have a clue what happened.
The following day I went back to uni howver I had the next day off. It wasnt that sore it just looked like I had a tennis ball in one side of my mouth.
It appears the bottom ones are usually harder to get out than the top, hence why my face only swelled on one side.

Crappy, I've got two "severely impacted" ones in the top. Dentist was a bit iffy when it came to telling me when they had to come out though. Not looking forward to it one bit!

Had mine out about 10 years ago. All four at once. As I was a student at the time, was done through the local hospital's dental service, thanks Community Service Card! (cost ~$270 vs $800 at a private dental surgeon, but required referral from my GP).
Lower two were impacted, needed to cut out part of the jawbone to remove them. Took the option of intravenous sedation (Valium + opiate). They also used a local as well. Was really interesting - the sedation doesn't knock you out, just relaxes (Valium) and makes you forget (opiate). I came too about 30 mins into the op, remember the last two teeth coming out (little rotary saws going into the jawbone, just felt pressure, no pain), one of the teeth breaking before coming out, all sorts of neat stuff. As I was high as a kite, I just didn't give a shit. Was taken home by a friend, still pretty stoned (no way was I allowed to ride home) had Shepard's pie for dinner, and looked like a chipmunk for a week, with some pretty achey cheeks for a couple of weeks.
End of pain and gum infections at the back of my teeth forever!
Cheers,

Yeah I had all 4 out at once - mainly because that was the cheapest way to do it! Only pay for one lot of drugs!
I had a really cool friend who looked after me and made me squishy food like custard and soup and smoothies for a few days. My mouth was so swollen I could hardly open it.
Also use a salt solution for a mouth wash. Tastes foul but prevents infections.
Getting teeth out is never a fun experience but I would describe it as "uncomfortable" and "inconvenient" rather than "painful."

I don't think it's that bad my sis had some out a couple of years ago and she survived with no real drama just some discomfort in the mouth area which would be obvious but nah you'll be right!!

No. You only hear the horror stories. Like motorcycling... are you an organ donor, eternally at riosk of dying etc etc etc?
No. But the stories abound about the bad experiences.... none about the good. I had 3 done at once, and if I had to I'd do it that way again.

I had an upper one removed last year and it wasn't at all painful with the normal local anasthetic; well only to the wallet. Apparently, the lower ones neeed a wee bit more of an effort to extract.

I had 4 out at once, with an IV sedative. I was a bit skeptical when the oral surgeon said I would be "awake", but I wouldn't really care, but he was absolutely correct. To put it mildy, I was out of my fucking tree. I slept through some of it, was "awake" for some, but I couldn't give a shit ...that I could feel bits of tooth splintering off into my mouth while they were sawing my jaw and lower wisdom teeth up. *ahem*.
Seriously, it's nothing to worry about. Go for the IV sedation if you have a choice. I was munted. Absolutely munted. :innocent:

I didn't have any major problems with any .. had them done only under local no sedation or anything. I had them done at various places including the hospital as I was receiving treatment for my MS that required me to have steriods when I had the tooth out.
It really is different for everyone ... I have no pain tolerance .. but my wisdoms were the easy ones

I trundled off to a dental surgeon one Friday afternoon. He put me under, ripped all four out and I was back at work on the Monday. Was a bit sore on the weekend and was off my food but I managed to pour down some runny slops to keep going and 'bingo'.
It's not the end of the world.

I've had all four of mine out. The first one was removed using the normal "wrench it out" method, which wasn't painful except for my lip that the dentist had used for leverage!
The other three were impacted so I was anaesthetised when they were removed. I wasn't at all sore afterwards - that dull pain only hit me two days afterwards and, like others have said, the discomfort is annoying and you just wish you were in pain!

But it hurt once the drugs wore off lol
The pain isn't too much, but the bleeding is annoying

I had all four of mine out at the same time and it was fine. Just wanted to throw into the discussion that if you have health insurance that covers surgery then this could be covered.
Southern Cross very nicely paid the $1K bill a number of years ago when I went to an oral surgeon. Had to get a referal from the dentist but happy to pay out the $70 bucks this cost me to get the teeth out for free....

Bloody right - IV sedation is amazing you really don't give a shit about what they are doing you'll hardly remember a thing - get a few Tarantino DVD's to watch on the couch for your comedown and enjoy.

Had mine ripped out about 30 years ago under a local anaesthetic. I can still well remember all the hideous sounds! Realising I was on a bike, the dentist, with a worried look, stuffed my mouth with cotton thingys and told me to keep it shut while I was riding. It wasn't too bad at all really.

Although not a dentist, I am a dental technician, and have done a fair bit of assisting an oral surgeon removing impacted 8's (wisdom teeth)
Tip. start rubbing vaseline on lips a couple of days before surgery. (helps stop cracking...the dentist/surgeon has to get mouth way open usually) (tennis ball, Benson-Pope style)
The swelling is usually relative to the ease and length of time that the tooth takes to come out. (an experienced oral surgeon can usually do the procedure faster than general dentist with little experience) So, the more pulling, twisting, yanking, the more swelling....you get what you pay for most times!
Sedation= relaxation. I have assisted in 2 hour procedures removing 4 wizzies under sedation. This is generally given intravenously. Patient conscious but unaware of timeframe (thought 20 minute procedure) But....you wont be able to get up and drive home, you will need to stay on bed rest for rest of day. Discuss this option! Also, a steroid is sometimes administered along with the sedation that can reduce the swelling.
you will get instructions for what to do after the procedure....follow them. Yep, there will be a little blood, and you won't feel too perky just after either. Take it easy for the rest of the day at least...get the latest motorcycle mag, put your feet up and relax.
lastly...put the tooth under the pillow and the next day there just might be a new Ducati 1098 in the garage...

I've had one wisdom tooth removed and the hole for a titanium implant drilled into my jawbone (front tooth) during the same procedure.
The titanium implant was a result of a cracked root from a previous crown - covered by ACC.
General anaesthetic was going to cost an extra $300, so I opted for the Valium tablets and local injections.
The procedure took about 50 minutes or 1.5 hours (don't really remember - that Valium is good shit), but only seemed like 15 minutes.
The wisdom tooth had roots so he had to cut into the bone a bit there as well but the pain wasn't too bad for either of them.
Funny thing was he just kept cutting till I said it hurt, then magically decided that that was far enough........and it was.........but did he need to go quite that far ?.........all that training and he relies on my pain threshold to let him know when to stop......that's a bit dodgy.......?
I wouldn't worry too much mate. Worse case scenario (impacted ?) - go for the general.

Ahh - that will explain the cutting till it hurts ! Cheers

11 injections, and 4 pre molars out wasnt so bad... Glad I had them out as I have room for all my wisdom teeth.
Just dont let the dentist break the roots when he pulls them out coz it hurts!
That happend to me with one of the teeth, and I screamed coz I still felt pain....walked out into reception my lower half of face was swollen, and everyone looked....so I played on it a bit more to scare all the patients waiting to go in hhahahah
Nah its not bad, you shouldn't feel a thing!!
