View Full Version : First sports bike?

I sit and should pass my full license at the end of this month. I have spent the last 12 months on a Hyosung GV250 cruiser. It's been a great little bike to ride and I have really enjoyed it....however I have also ridden some sports bikes, and some 600cc models in particular and love it! When I get my full I want to by either a GSXR600 or ZX-6R. I am 6ft and 95kg would either of these bikes be to small for me, should I look at going to say a 10R or Gixxer1000?

Any advice would be appreciated especially if you ride either model.

Cheers:scooter:

I hate to say it, but you'll find the ergos compromised on all those bikes when compared against your weight and height. You may be prepared to live with that though, so that's cool.

You should try them out. Don't buy without a ride first.

I'm a couple of inches shorter than you and 5kgs lighter. I had an '04 R6 that was brilliant. But. After a couple of unavoidable commutes and one ride where I herniated the muscle between two ribs, I wanted to throw it in a ditch and kick it like John Hopkins beat his GSV-R. The Ergonomics didn't work for me under about 140km/hr.

I test rode an R6 and loved it. I should've taken it for a 2 hour ride in as many traffic conditions as possible. A 20 minute fang doesn't tell you if you can live with a bike.

I don't think you would be too big for them... but, take them for a test ride, and see if the are comfortable for you and your riding style and to see if they will met your needs etc...

Hyosung GV250 to a litre bike is a big step
What about a gsxr750?
If you get a 10r go for a 06/07, they are nice and tame (compared to the 04/05)

Got to agree about the 04-05 ZX10R... great bike, huge attitude, not for the inexperienced. I have only had one ride, and came away with a HUGE respect for it.
G-dawg... I am 6ft and 97kg, and my 750 is very comfortable for me. The bike is small, but the ergos are great. They are the same for the 600. There are some good buys out there if you're in the right place at the right time as well. For me, I'm having more fun on my 750 (advancing years and grey hairs...)

I think its extremely sensible, and would be a timely upgrade to go from a GV250 to a GSXR1000. They have a reputation for being a bit gutless, so you'd need some performance mods (pipe, chip, airbox) but you should be fine after that.

seriously: ARE YOU INSANE??

look at something sensible like an SV650 or Cagiva 650 or CBR600F4 if you must... or a DL650 or ER6N or something.... something that wont kill you dead as dead can be within a month.

I am personally finding the 750 to be less of an "animal" than the 1000. To get it to become angry takes a bit more input. The 750 is happier to sit at sensible speeds if you want it to. I LOVE the nimble characteristics of the 750 and 600. The gixxer 600 or 750 would certainly be worth a look

No need to talk him into buying chickwheels, dude. There's nothing wrong with a GSX-R600 or 750.

To be honest, if I were g-dawg, I'd take a Bandit 12 out for a spin. Just as a reference, like.

Thanks for the responses. My thinking for now is a gsxr600. Powerful enough for a good time and don't think I'd outgrow it in 2 years...mmm black or suzuki stock colours?...definitely black!

I am also taking out of this that the best thing to do is test ride them!

G-dawg, a neat feature on the 06 and later 600 and 750 is the adjustable footpegs. I have mine set on the lowest position... I don't end up with any ground clearance problems, and the comfort is great (one of my knees has been operated on twice)

Go with the 600's, then you may live to get a 1000 later on.

The K6/K7 GSXR600/750s are the most comfortable sports bikes I have ever ridden.

Stuff "Suzuki GSXR: Own the racetrack" it's more like "Suzuki GSXR: Good for that 2 week 2 up South Island trip"

But make sure you ride them all, comfort may not be all that you want.

Be honest with yourself.
Then test ride that honesty using all of the bikes you've mentioned and see how it translates in terms of confidence, personal satisfaction and ability.

Have fun.:niceone:

What's ya budget mate?

I stepped up from an SR250 on Wednesday....RF900R, a real nice bike. A good balance between comfort & sportiness & extremely good value for money. Don't get me started on how bullet proof the motor is :-p

My vote would be for a CBR600. It's unlikely to bite back, as you need really be winding it out but when you do, it's a rocket. But coupled with very manageable weight, and a nice progression from a 250. There's a reason they're so popular - they're so good. I don't think there's much between any of the Jap 600 models - Yamaha, Kawasaki, Suzuki and Honda all keep each other honest; individual bikes are more likely to vary form one to another, so look around for a good bike in that class. It will also depend on which dealer you're happiest dealing with, or trading your existing bike with.

Before I got the ZX9 I had a CBR600, and that was a step from an XR600, all dirt bikes previously. I would never consider a CBR600 to be slow, lots more gear changing and revving, but slow, I don't think so.
Have you seen a CBR/R6/ZXR/GSXR 600 at Wanganui Battle of the Streets.

1300cc Suzuki Hyabusa. Go on you know you want to!
Live life on the edge and scare yourself a little after all, a good fright everyday keeps your senses sharp and responsive, stare danger in the eye and make it choke on your burnout smoke!!!!

Nobody's asked what type of riding you like.
From your post I guess you are into sport riding and andrenalin thrills. If so I would go for something like the gixxer 6s.
However, if you want to do some touring, distance ridining, cruising, pillion riding or generally mixed riding (even some commuting) I would go with the suggestions for sporty all-round workhorses like the CBR600Fs or GSX600Fs. These are both 230kph+ 4.5 0-60mph machines so seriously fast - but also fairly mild and easy-going unless asked. Comfortable too over distance and for larger riders.

Let us know what you get and post pics!

why not just get a CBR1000RR "Fireblade" ??? Thats prolly the most sensible of the liter bikes and would suit your weight/height etc.... Dont get me wrong, it'll still kill ya if you dont respect it but its the best liter bike (sports bike) if you intend to commute and such.

Either that or get an MV Agusta Brutale.......after you win the lottery.

You have got to be joking! There are corners on NZ roads and commuting here means in towns and cities not a freeway commute to a parking lot.

limbimtimwim
11th August 2007, 15:02
A fireblade would be an okay commuter in Wellington. They are super easy to use for a sports bike.

But you could do a lot better if you wanted a commuter.

And it would make a shit first sports bike, too heavy and too big a step up.

Have you straddled a sportbike yet? Or just like the image? You need to know you can live with the less comfy riding position (compared to the GV) and much more power (both good and bad for a new-ish rider).

I went from a 250 bandit (much faster than the Hyo gt250 which I test rode before the bandit) to my RF and it's been plenty of fun! Definitely recommend an in between step before the gsxrcbrrrzxrrrrrrrr10000000000000000000!

Unless you've been given 3 months by the doctor, then go the turbo, nitrous gsxr1000 I say!

OK so I've been doing my reading and the test to pass my full is now only 2 weeks away. After much consultation and thought I'm thinking SV1000s!

I can't wait to pass and take one for a spin!

The vtwin won't be as flighty as some of the 600's and I have total ruled out getting a 1000cc super sport bike

do take one for a spin even if it as 2nd hand year older model. some people love twins, some people don't. they are nice bikes tho and probably a good compromise. im 6ft and road a gix6 the other day i had to iron the cramp out of my quads afterwards. not so bad in your twenties but mid-30's onwards ive found it starts to sieze up. the sv thous have enough grunt to keep a smile on for veterans so you won't outgrow it in a hurry.

good luck, you'll love whatever you get :)

Well, if you've ruled out a liter bike (sports bike) but you still want 1000cc displacement (as you seem to still want) why not try a Yamaha Fz-1. Its got a detuned R1 motor in it and it looks the shit too.

Here is a pic of the Fz-1. Great looking bike and it goes like stink. But more comfortable then a full on super sport.

Now you're thinking, lots of low down grunt and they sound mean with a good set of pipes. May not have the top end of the inline fours but still diserves plenty of respect. Anything that can sprint to 100 in under 4 seconds has got plenty of potential to kill you if you don't respect it. But in my opinion, can't beat it in terms of bang for buck.

But get a good long test ride, the SV's are heavy on the hands/wrists due to the riding position and I find my legs get cramped too. Not a problem if you don't mind taking a quick break every 100km or so. But I'm slightly taller and lighter than you so you might have even more probs with the weight on your hands.

righto

A quick update. I've had my 2004 sv1000s now for 2 weeks and I'm in love! The power is great and even and the bike handles like a dream.

I've given all the good roads in Dunedin a thrashing and am loving it through the twisties. Lately I've started to take it to work as the weather is well improving.

Looking forward to more rides and a summer full of good times!:headbang:
